My great uncle was Captain of the USS Arkansas battleship during the battle of Iwo Jima and was later promoted to Admiral. His name was Admiral George McFadden O'Rear.

Great video. In the photograph of BB-66 USS Kentucky hull is show with its bow missing. It was taken off to and used in the repair of USS Wisconsin, which had been damaged in a collision with the destroyer USS Eaton on 6 May 1956. So, in spirit USS Kentucky still lives on.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, you are correct. That photo is of the tugs taking the hull away to be scrapped in 1958

Nice video. Surprised you didn’t mention the planned, but canceled Montana-class battleships: BB-67 USS MONTANA BB-68 USS OHIO BB-69 USS MAINE BB-70 USS NEW HAMPSHIRE BB-71 USS LOUISIANA Those would have been impressive!

USS Mississippi BB 41 - In 1954 the U.S. Navy used the battleship USS Mississippi as a test ship to launch the terrier missiles. She was used until 1956. There is a Y-tube video showing that too.

wow...the yanks sure were enamoured of placing their main battery guns far forward in the turrets for quite a while...I also can't remember the last time I watched a half hour video unencumbered by ads. Thank you very much for putting the time and effort into compiling this!

Most early battleships of the US were designed for coastal defense. The US was very isolationist for a lot of its history.

YANK's... LOL. Speaking of placing Main Battery Guns forward... What's up with that HMS Rodney design? Kind of makes sense when you might be on the wrong side of crossing the "T".

USS Kersage was rebuilt into a Crane ship and worked in that role for years. She even gave up her name so an Essex class carrier could have it...becoming USS Prairie State.

Another fun fact USS Kearsarge was named not only after the mountain but the Civil War Sloop of War that hunted down and sunk the famous Confederate raider CSS Alabama, after her conversion to a Crane ship this Kearsarge helped with the construction of USS Alabama BB-60

Cool history of the battleships the US has had and to see their evolution. Should add to the "Fate" section of that the USS West Virginia BB-48 was sunk at Pearl Harbor, refloated, refitted and fought again in WWII. Even being in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the surrender of the Japanese Empire.

The photo shown as BB34 is BB35. BB34 never had the searchlight configuration shown in the photo. At commissioning, the searchlights on both masts were on the same level, totaling 4 for each mast. BB35 at commissioning had the searchlight configuration in the photo. This configuration did not change until January 1918, in the New York Navy Yard

Ah, you have an eagle-eye. Yes, you are correct. I had a different, but very similar photo I intended to use of BB-34 but noticed it after I recorded the video. Since both are the same class of ship, it still represents it well, so I kept it

The entry for USS Maine needs an asterisk, you must be referring to post-war Maine Number 2.

Enjoyed the list but...Why would you not have the USS Texas and USS Maine to begin your list? They are listed in the US National Archives as the first two USN Battleships. Yes, the USS Texas (unnumbered) didn't have a BB#, but by all historical accounts she was a pre-dreadnought battleship built by the USN and was the first American battleship to be commissioned (3-months earlier) on 15 August 1895. Then there was the USS Maine (ARC1), who also didn't have a BB#. She was commissioned (2-months earlier) on 17 September 1895 The USS Indiana (BB-1) was commissioned on 20 November 1895.

Thank you for your video. A couple of questions if no one objects and, hopefully, someone will have answers. Why did the battleships up through USS Arizona have bows that were vertical to forward raked? They almost look like they were intended as rams. Second, the New Yorks, after their major rebuild had a stump tower immediately abaft the funnel. Can anyone tell me what that stump tower was and its purpose?
@CaseyinTexas
@CaseyinTexas Жыл бұрын
I can't answer for the bow differences, but, from what I've read, the stump towers on the New Yorks (New York & Texas), were left over pedestals the the old lattice cage masts common on US battleships was removed. The old masts were replaced with tripod masts.

USS New Mexico Battleship BB 40 - On 12 November, while off the coast of New York, the tugs pulling the battleship encountered heavy weather and were forced to cut the tow lines. Running lights were kept on aboard New Mexico along with three crewmembers, but the tugs eventually lost sight of the battleship. New Mexico then drifted as a derelict until spotted by a Coast Guard plane the next day, 35 miles off the coast. You did not mention this in your video.

👏👏👏!!! Very detailed, perfect documentary👍!!! So glad you did it cryologically, as I am somewhat anal (which is good, such as perfection. But not 'retentive', which is asshole like). I got jealous when, we got to USS IOWA BB6. I didn't know they renamed battleships, more than once. I thought, the state's name, was retired. The reason I was jealous was, 'cause I thought battleship New Jersey, was built only once, but I see other states had theirs (and ours), recommissioned. Montana was the only state NOT, to have one?? Thanks, for this 😁!!

They became obsolete after the introduction of dreadnoughts. Early dreadnoughts were also phased out because of the Washington naval treaty after WWI.

Actually the left over older coal burners were an asset in early WW2 for convoy escorting. The British had no oil, but lots of coal.
