I'm in this video and I still love watching it! Brings back a lot of great memories! And this was one of our best performances. We were in Norway for a week and did three nights. All for a full house! Let me tell you, we were all shitting our pants nervous! We executed what we trained for perfectly (except for one minor error, I won't tell you where its at!) We stayed with the Norway Army Drill team at their barracks and they were awesome. Nothing but love for the Norwegian people. They were some of the nicest people I've ever met. Anyway, thanks to everyone for all of the positive comments. It is appreciated!

@Matthew GREAT job. I was in the Army, but my dad is retired Navy w/ the CBs. He is getting up in age now, but when I showed him this, he started getting teary-eyed (in a good way). Over the years dad has talked about his experiences down in Gitmo, and he always has pride when talking about his Navy days, so when he saw this, it was a pleasure for him (and myself) to watch. Thanks!

I was on the drill team while in US Navy boot camp in Orlando, Fl. in the summer 1987. We used similar techniques while performing during the graduation ceremonies. The uniforms, tassels, neck scarf, side slaps, rifle bunts, twirls. The climax came when the drill team leader walked through a synchronized barrage of hurled rotating rifles/ baronets. This takes long hours of practice and dedication- BZ shipmates!

+Danie Herrin It's one thing to spin and toss a modern drum corps-style rifle that's basically a lightweight blank stock. It's something else again to do so with a real, functioning rifle (Springfield?) that probably weighs 5-6 lbs, even withOUT bayonets affixed. Well done.

I was a member of the team when I was in the Navy and all the training and prep was done during our off time. Yes, it was after we completed our regular work day. It took a lot of effort, discipline, time and dedication to made it and the pride after accomplishment is forever with you. The parade program is equally as impressive. Great performance. Be proud my Brothers.

Yes, being a member of the Honor Guard, Drill Team, landing force, and everything else was voluntary. And, training almost amounted to "extra duty" - you still had to do all your regular work before you could practice!

I was in TOG 1963-66 Co.E and we always considered Navy the best at it after ourselves. This USN drill team of 2007-08 is the best I've seen hands down. AF Drill Team these days is very good while The Crotch Drill Team from 8th&I is perpetually boring. I was in JFK Funeral but USN Eddie Nemuth was the Number One of the grim time carrying Potus flag behind the caisson and inside all the time and throughout three days and nights. Eddie marched a couple of hundred miles behind the caisson during the funeral while the rest of us in the armed forces switched off day to day. Eddie Nemuth was there all the way and was Number One of armed forces ceremonial guards through all of it. My bro was Navy on an emergency standby flying team to service nuclear subs power plants. Navy: can't win without 'em.

I did this in high school, though not with bayonets. There's a lot going on here. The most impressive thing is the consistency of the spins and tosses. Every member has to toss at the same height and speed and at the same time to get this effect. The choreography is pretty but it's the least difficult part. It also takes a lot of time to get just the basic spin down. This isn't like tossing around a dowel rod. Those rifles look like old Springfield's and their weight is not evenly distributed, plus the slings can make grabbing it awkward. Add to that the diversity of types of spins and tosses and you can see why this is impressive. Not necessarily useful in combat but it is a morale booster.
@eli6797
@eli6797 5 жыл бұрын
Shady Crzy yeah, I practiced this in highs hill too. We used rifles that weighed 8 pounds and the slings were taped down (which effectively made them rifle shaped sticks) but these guys must have 12 or more pound rifles with un-tied slings and bayonets in the way
@ekhalkov

These are not rifles, they are juggling tools that were made look like real rifles, i.e. perfectly balanced for the purpose.
@paulbrown8216
@paulbrown8216 4 жыл бұрын
I have no idea where you got that idea. We drilled with M-14's - real rifles, fully combat ready, with real bayonets, and a magazine in a waist pouch. My drill team may or may not have won in competition with the guys in the video, but we were damned good. USS Richard E. Byrd for 2 1/2 years, and USS Koelsch for another 2 1/2 years. There was nothing "ceremonial" about being the honor guard, for the colors, for the captain, or for the ship - it was serious business.

***** I dispute that my comments were "wrong". And yes, they do make careers of it. That is their choice. What they do when they become civilians is not our business. What they represent is what is important. There are thousands such men and women all over the world who do this. I doubt they would agree that they are "puppets". Try saying something nice. You might feel better about yourself. Or don't say anything at all.

***** Most of these guys are enlisted and served on active duty doing something else for quite a while before becoming apart of the ceremonial guard much the same with the Air Force Honor Guard Drill team, US Marine corps silent drill Platoon and U.S. Army 3rd Infantry regiment Drill team. No one's MOS is Drill Team this is something done out of pride and not a career and most don't even make it and very few that do get to perform.

I think this is absolutely amazing - not only the officer has to trust the abilities of his men, as they are throwing their weapons all around him and pointing them at him, they also need to trust their officer not to move in some unexpected way, so they wouldn't hurt him. I'm absolutely awed at the show of their skills! And not only that - this whole video is a picture of badassery. I applaud you, guys!

According to Max Boot (2006), "To learn how to make soldiers . . . they updated the drill of the Roman Legions for a modern gunpowder battle field. . . . When groups engage in choreographed movements such as marching or chanting, a feeling of fellowship rapidly develops" (pp. 59-60). Although there are other methods, drill contributes to warfare by creating a sense of cohesion within a military unit. For the most part, I think every US veteran can appreciate this video because it displays hard work and discipline and even though these sailors aren't hard fighting men, their drill movements embodies dedication. Overall, drill is not meant to frighten anyone, it is meant to psychologically create a sense of belonging within a unit. Reference Boot, M. (2006). War made new: Weapons, warriors and the making of the modern world. Gotham Books: New York, NY. 59-60.

Prezzy Squiddles ~~ The Navy is so traditional about uniform change, until recently. In my time when they gave out uniforms my blue wool bell bottoms had no belt loops, no zipper, instead there were 13 buttons up front an a drawstring in the back. On a full bladder you danced on your toes while you went through the 13 count manual. LOL

Queen Elizabeth II I meant what I said, may the best performance win the war. Or, play chess, if they prefer... but this "doping scandal" I hadn't heard of, oh my.
