The 7.62mm NATO M60E6 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) represents the latest improvements to the M60 Series of machine guns. It is a gas operated, disintegrating link, belt fed, air-cooled machine gun. It fires from an open bolt and features a quick-change barrel. The M60E6 features a machined aluminum feed cover with integrated M1913 Picatinny rail for mounting optics. An aluminum M1913 rail handguard provides for the mounting of infrared laser aiming devices and other sensors, giving the weapon 24 hour capability.

Used the M60E2. Glad to see that they have fixed all of the shortcomings of the PIG. I lost my trigger group on a road march. Said road march quickly became a Bataan Death March as we searched for the lost trigger group. I was not a popular man that day....

A blast from the past! I showed my youngest Daughter this weapon at an SAR show last Dec. She could not believe that was something I had to carry around on a perimeter security detail, from age 19 to 23. Funnier still is how old the weapon is. I showed Lil-D, a photo of a Marine in Vietnam using this weapon, in a 2 man crew set up, in 1966. Funnier still in 1986, in ITS, I was being trained on the E3. Sad fact was the grip screw would loosen up and the forward grip came off. Oddly enough, our dog tags were the right size to get in there to tighten it up. LOL! Memories of the pig and its parts! Great vid! Thanks!

I was the M60 guy in my scout platoon, had the high All Army score with it, 183 out of 185, for two years and could break it down into it's 7 major pieces in less that 4 seconds. First day we saw it the DI was firing it from his shoulder, couldn't hit shit and he caught me laughing at him and asked if I could do better. I said "Absolutely", walked up, took the sling off the butt of the weapon, made it as long as possible so it was on the ground, put my left foot on the sling and fired from my shoulder, got a hell of a lot more rounds on target. "Where did you learn that??" "I figured it out myself. I know I don't get paid to think so consider that a freebie."

I trained on the M-60 while in US Army, 1976-1980. We were a signal battalion, but we stayed proficient with various weapons. My favorite was the 'pig'. Completely controllable and reliable, I never had any problems with this thing. The rate of fire was slow enough you could count-out any size burst you wanted! Hated cleaning it...

I'm surpriced that we Danes were mentioned. Normally we are overseen. As the guy in the team who gets to carry this gun, I feel blessed to be the most dangerous guy. On the other hand there is a lot more pressure on me as my fire support is more important and my gun is more complex. I am really liking this gun, it's great in so many ways, but a pain in the a** to carry. My only complaint about the gun itself though is when assemblying the top cover, the silver rail-thing is quite difficult to get in place just right.

Superb look at the M60E1 upgrade. I used the M60 many times in Vietnam too, but I loved it; never called it 'pig'. However, it might fail if not properly cleaned and reassembled. The buttstock would pull off if not assembled right. When I checked out the M60, I redid the work of the first guy.

Ian from Forgotten Weapons went over the M60 in one of his videos and mentioned that the bolt lugs on the Pig would peen after high round counts due to a lack of a cam to smoothly rotate the bolt when it cycles. Would certainly prefer this for dismounted work than a M240, the pig has always been comparatively light and quite well balanced. One of the problems with the US Army is the attempts to make everyone use the same weapons and to have only a small variety. In the case of the M240 (Bravo or the newer Echos) is that while they're fine medium machine guns they're just not well suited to the role of a true LMG where one man often has to employ it and move around a great deal.

I'll add to my earlier points that it's easy o mount a full box of ammo on the M60 and move with it at the ready where the M240 doesn't have a great system, most people moving with a tiny starter belt at the ready, although I'll admit the newer bag is alright but I had trouble getting other people on my squad to use it.

You know, the M60's flaws were well known back in the Vietnam era. All of these upgrades were possible back then, and if they'd been done, the M60 would probably still be the US military's GMPG today. There never was anything wrong with the gun's basic design; it's bugs -- like a non-adjustable front sight, barrel-mounted bipod, a gas system that can be easily assembled backward, a front vent plug that has to be safety wired down to keep the gun from disassembling itself as it fires, et al. -- were all eminently curable. I am at a loss why the military allowed the gun to remain in service for over three decades without ever fixing these problems. The army was switching over when I was in during the late '90s. When my unit got the M240, the machine gunners all appreciated the greater reliability, but they also all hated the fact that it was five pounds heavier than the M60. Believe me, when you have to carry something on 25 mile tactical foot marches, you want to shave off every extra ounce you can, and a weapon that was five pounds heaver caused a lot of grumbling.
@absoleet
@absoleet 8 жыл бұрын
Take a look at the Forgotten Weapons video, there were several basic design compromises with the M60 that caused 2 long term durability problems - bolt peening and receiver wear/flex, which would be cause for tossing the whole thing if it were another gun. The E6 mods only fixed the smaller issues but couldn't address the basic flaws without having to redesign the whole gun entirely. And I think the E6 didn't fix the simple trigger sear design that could wear out if the trigger wasn't depressed fully.

Capt Trdl, I think you are confusing the FN MAG/M240 with the M249 SAW. The 240 is in 7.62mm NATO, just like the M60 is. The M249 is the 5.56mm weapon.
@Alakarr
@Alakarr 7 жыл бұрын
I was a Small Arms Repairer (MOS 45B at the time, now 91F) for 12 years. Absoleet is on the money with the real basic flaws of the M60, but in addition to the bolt peening issue, you also had a similar issue with the operating rod yolk and the bolt cam groove. I can't count the number of M60's I had to beat open with a hammer because the yolk roller shattered from the deformation of the cam groove causing the whole operating rod/bolt assembly to lock in battery. The most commonly replaced parts on the M60's (at my level of maintenace) were the operating rod and bolt. The receiver issue was also very real. The M60 receiver is sheet metal with two rail plates flat riveted to the inside to act as guide rails for the operating group. Needless to say, between the handling a grunt can give any weapon and the pounding from firing, those plates loosen up. When that happens the whole weapon has to be replaced, with the broken weapon going in for depot rebuild. The improvements US Ordnance made are really nice, but even with them the M60 is inferior to the M240/MAG 58.

True enough, if it were not for the genius of private small arms inventors like Browning and Stoner, the US military would either be lacking in military firearms or we would have had to purchase from abroad; the latter option it appears we are already doing.

Well if the Danish army are making it their new standard issue I would have to say they know what they are doing. European armies always seem to be rather hesitant about adopting large quantities of a new weapon so to see one adopting a new GPMG is quite a big deal. Not to mention an American made GPMG that had a rather rough time in Vietnam.

Back in the day, the M60 was part of our TO&E. We had a world class armorer who had some Navy connections thru the old-boy network and the first thing he did when a new 60 came in was convert it into a maremont; shorter barrel, different muzzle device, forward handgrip and worked his magic on the internals. I personally believe this involved black cats and a full moon, but I couldn't prove it. In any case, the weapon was lighter, functioned better and wasn't a complete pain to jump with. The IG wasn't real happy with it, but kept his mouth shut when taken to the range and invited to try the modded gun against the issue gun.

So on the original M60 each replacement barrel had its own bipod?? If so that is absolutely absurd, can you imagine how much bulk and weight that would add.
@edmundcharles5278
@edmundcharles5278 5 жыл бұрын
The absurdity was that the US Ordnance Corps saw fit to adopt a GPMG that did not meet varied and necesaary operational and ergonomic requirements. The M60 prototype should have been compared against existing GPMG designs and the necessarity changes made to incorporate the best GPMG features that existed. Additionally, extensive GI and USMC user tesats needed to be done. Still the M60 worked most of the time that the trigger was pulled, but it was a most inferior GPMG upon its adoption.

I was on an M60 squad I'm 1999 when they were phased out from regular line unuts and replaced by the 240B. Those damn contraptions were ancient and would jam about every 6 rounds. We'd have to basically take the whole goddamn thing apart to clear the jam and would be time consuming. I'd love to tote the upgraded version here with the M60s stopping power with the 7.62 round!

Quite amazing to see how far the 60 has come since its debut back in 1957. Of course, not a southpaw-friendly GPMG (unless you're in possession of a brass catching container, which I believe E&L Manufacturing makes), but still--a massive improvement over the E1 model from its heyday. OuO

claus2427 Seeing the latest drop in quality from H&K, troubled company finances, the frequent raids by the German police against their headquarters due to allegations of illegal arms sales, and the damning report regarding the failure of the G36 rifle in service with the Bundeswehr, the Danes might have avoided a potential bullet by adopting the M60e6 over the H&K121 (no pun intended).

A lot of guys complained about the 60 but growing up through the ranks with the pig, (ammo bearer, A-gunner then Gunner) the biggest issue with the it was with blanks in training, firing ball ammo never really an issue, especially if cleaned and you were well versed in immediate action drills, load, fire, reduce, stoppages and clearing. Hopefully they came up with a better blank adapter for training as well. These up grades seem to be spot on, I think covering the inside of forearm assembly with a heat dissipating material would keep the aluminum from heating up with extended firing, and moving the carrying handle from the receiver to the barrel and making the front sight adjustable is pure genius, along with losing the lacing wire from the barrel assembly for easier cleaning. I wish they would have came up with this before the Army retired the weapon system.
@edmundcharles5278
@edmundcharles5278 5 жыл бұрын
The M60 blanks were a major sourrce of the weapon jamming, as the retarted blank cartridge gasses quickly fouled up the entire receiver with carbon buildup. With regular ammo, the M60 performed very well if you kept it clean.
