USA & Australia Dialogue Differences | The Mysterious Painting (Cardcaptors)

I've cut together all the different lines of dialogue and voice inflections found between the USA and Australian versions of Cardcaptors episode 7: The Mysterious Painting. I don't know why....

Where did you find the Australian dub? It’s very nostalgic to me because it was the first version of Cardcaptor Sakura that I ever watched.

The reason why the US version is like this is because in the English dub DVD’s in the US this episode was in the 8th volume and was the 23rd episode. However in Australia they have a VHS series of cardcaptors that stuck 3 episodes in their original order.

Now that made sense! I have the vhs of the the sword, the power, and the fight card episode in one. And I was confuse about the audio changes until now I found your comment! Thanks for explaining to everyone who was confused or didn't know.

Are you interested in signing a petition for trying to get Sakura Avalon back? Fans asked me to make it because they understand that Sakura Avalon should have a dub for Cardcaptor Clear Card. Thanks for the comment! There are other episodes with script differences, but this episode has the most. Some other episodes in the USA took two episodes and cut them together as one and so (aside from the different structures of the episodes) only a few lines of dialogue are actually different. It can be pretty messy and this was just an "easy" video to make.

I actually didn't know the US and International Version had differences... i just thought they simply aired less episodes in US and full in international. Could you upload more when you get the spare time? perhaps one episode in a weekend maybe

What Kero did is that he modified the picture Of him that Sakura drew when she saw it she screamed. Causing her to be repermanded by her teacher Kero wrote “I actually look like this!” On the paper. The American Version removed the Japanese handwriting that Kero wrote. The Australian version replaced it with “What I really look like”.

Wow, a ton of alternate takes in the US version, I'm curious why. The line where Madison says "Prepare for battle" in lieu of "Time to get changed" for all I know was a request by Kids WB.

It was probably the "spicier" take and the more "direct" line. A lot of the lines seem like that was what they clearly were going for

The version that aired in America had an extra executive to meddle that didn't work at Nelvana but at KidsWB.

Wow, the AUS dialogue is so much better in all of these instances. The inflections in their voice, as well as their word choices, really add to their character. The only one I don't personally like is the AUS dialogue when the boy is revealed to be a girl. The USA audio has them understanding why that task was so important for the little girl. I wonder why the AUS audio focused on their surprise of her hiding she's a girl, and then assuring her that she is beautiful. It kind of implies she was feeling self-conscious, but now that dilemma has been resolved, even though it was never a point in the plot. It's just weird. Everything else, especially Syaoran's line of dialogue. It's absolutely ridiculous he would know who Sakura is at that point, so the AUS dialogue keeps him mysterious without giving any connections to Sakura at all. This video has shown me that I can watch the AUS version of Cardcaptors rather than the US version because it will, seemingly, have better dialogue and delivery. So, thank you very much.

It's because the KidsWB (US) cut changed the order so Syaoran's debut was the first episode whilst the Nelvana (AUS/UK) Cut left them in the correct order.

The Australian dialogue is more faithful to the American dialogue. As such, Sakura mistaking Alex as a boy is from the original Japanese version. I don't think the disguise was done to make Alex self-conscious of her looks, but rather, to throw a red herring to the audience so as they wouldn't connect the girl in the painting with Alex right away - Alex is disguised after all. I am guessing the American version changed it because Kids WB might be afraid parents would accuse them of promoting cross-dressing or transgender identity; Network public channels in America had crazy rules back then such as no stains on mattresses, no one can be seen physically hitting g ppl, etc..

I grew up with the Australian version in Asia, so that version feels more natural to me. Also I like the Australian intro better than the US one, the song is "catchy".

I do wished Cardcaptors Dub by Nelvana is finally released onto complete Blu Ray /DVD collection from SD Blu-ray at last just like Beyblade, Sonic X, Beyblade, Dinosaur King, Shaman King, and Ultimate Muscle: Kinnikuman Legacy .

It was a Canadian voice actress working for Nelvana. The USA dubs are BangZoom for the movies and Funimation for Clear. The third dub is by AniMax.

Super interesting. I knew the Australian release was the more faithful of the two but I didn't realise the dialogue had that many differences. I finally tracked down some of the rarer DVD releases for this series (I think Australia only released the first 15 episodes) and I find it really weird how Li's voice is all over the place. In two episodes of the fifteen I have he sounds totally different to the rest of the time.

@@presidentevil9951 Of the American and Australian versions, it was the better in that they had the episodes in the correct order. I agree that they edited a lot from Card Captor Sakura, but we also had the original OP and Ending themes (albeit translated).

There's more than just dialogue differences. There were some episodes that were never aired on US TV. Either that, or two episodes were spliced into one. 😞

@@jameslevy8347 Are u serious, Carly was 12 at the time she voiced that girl and she used her own voice. Her voice changed so it wont work anymore. Rhys and Jordan verbatim. So it won't work out. Andrea/Kari's voice should've voiced her. Candace/Mona should've voiced syaoran

Oh man this brings back memories! I remember seeing Cardcaptors on TV here in Australia, I remember it being HUGE here! Is there a way to watch the Australian Version online? Or would be collecting the original three VHS/DVDS be the best way to go? I'd love to see them again!

Well now I'm confused! What version did we get in the UK? I guess I'll have to look around a bunch of shops until I come across any DVD's to confirm. But the chances of finding any in the area I live are slim

We got the same version as Australia, though I do remember being confused when Nick was marathoning the series and we got shown both the Aus and US versions of certain episodes so they clearly had access to both.

Easy way to tell is what theme song you got. Look up the Japanese OP and if it's basically what you remember as a kid (but y'know Japanese instead of English), you got what we got in Australia (I assume)

KZfaq has a mixture of the US/AU versions of the show, though depending on the episode ya watch, quality may suffer. For the official English version from Animax which is free on Crunchy Roll, well?... It's cute! The US/Au versions (which I do love the music from it), it feels, rushed.

Yikes. Imo, the AUS dub makes the US one look good. And don't get moi wrong. I love the "US" dub, as ik it, for nostalgic factor. Even if it's glaringly apparent years later, that the acting may not have been so good.. but it's weird learning that there is and hearing reworded lines. Especially the lines that aren't actually reworded at all and just retakes. I wonder why they did that? Like, I like Carly's voice, for what it's worth, but I think she did way better in the US takes. The inflection alone is so.. off, with the AUS take. And it makes moi wonder how and why that even is. I wonder if maybe Carly was confused why they even had to redo lines in the first place and (assuming the US take was recorded first) thought something like "if they didn't like the way I did it before, I have to make it sound different this time." But being given thr exact same lines, all she can do to change it is her delivery and the inflection - which she got "right" the first time imo. And the same goes for Madison/Tomoyo tbh.

Oh, pretty cool. The Aussie dub's lines are more literary and contextual but lacks the colloquial, conversational feel of the U.S dub.

I’m an Australian and I had no idea we did a version not being picky but I think we did a better job but since I never watched the Aus ver I can’t properly judge if they didn’t cut out her romance with Sayron or Li and they didn’t butcher it like the US did

I watched the Australian version back in the day on good old, Cheez TV. The Australian version still retains all the name changes and edits of the USA version, like the censorship of same sex relationships. We did however get the original Japanese openings in Australia with localised lyrics, while the USA got radically different openings.

To be fair, both versions were recorded in Canada but the version we got probably was better as it was marginally closer to original. I like how we got four of the original six credit sequences too.

@@nathanmiller1 From what I understand, the version that aired in Aus/NZ was the original dub. But before it aired in the US, the US then went and edited it again.

I know the Japanese way to say it is Sa-ku-ra, but the way they pronounce Sakura in THIS dub sounds so good to my English ears. Hearing it in other dubs like Naruto sounds like soccer-a :/

But it has viewed thousands by people and some most of them told me that they agree with me that Sakura Avalon should come with another dub of Clear Card but they don't like change.org because it's got a lot of upsetting petitions. My video with my evidence has been viewed more than 1.5k that's good so far. I'm still hearing from fans that a lot of people hate the Clear Card dub by funimation and they rather have Sakura Avalon back.

@@TheLuigghy I do respect that Sakura Kinomoto is the original version and she came first. But you and the Kinomoto fans should understand that it's not the Avalon fan's fault for growing up with Sakura Avalon. I should think you should respect that. I apologize if I offered you.
