People don’t think this scary but it’s terrifying when it’s a normal day outside and you here the blank tone going off on the TV out of nowhere. It’s the perfect way to make your heart drop

I remember when I was about 10 or 11 (19 now) I was at my grandparents place with my family and family friends. It was storming pretty badly outside but since we lived near the beach, the wind was normal for us. As we watched the storm roll in, one of my friends who had stayed to watch tv ran towards us and beckoned us inside. I heard this sound slowly get louder as I walked towards our house and saw the faint blue glow of the tv screen warning us of a spotted tornado in our area. We ran downstairs to our basement and came out 3 days later to trees and power lines fallen everywhere. Out house was ok except for a few hits, but it has still been one of the scariest sounds and experiences for me.

I grew up in tornado alley most whole life and I remember when I was a kid and this would start playing on all radios phones (if you had a newer one) and TVs I would get super excited because I knew the weather was about to go crazy. Something about the chaos if it all was exciting and gave me a rush.

As a citizen of the US of A, good ol' America, America: land of the brave and home of the free, I have nothing outlandish to say. Just that I used to fear this every time I heard it as a young child. I don't ever remember seeing a hummingbird, but my parents say that I have seen one and confused it as a giant mosquito.

I live in the USA. I used to find it scary when I was younger, but I no longer find it scary. I'm intrigued by some of the other EAS, such as Israel and Greece.

If your not from the United States, you don’t know how scary this can be. At night hearing this makes you want to stay put and hide. Or during the day when the TV goes blank and you hear this. This sent a chill down my spine just hearing it from my phone.

I remember watching cartoons as a kid one morning, and they played this as a drill. That was the first I heard and saw the EAS in use, and I was literally traumatized by it.

I'm a trucker in the US and there's nothing quite like driving the a thunderstorm and feeling the wind rock the truck then having this go off right as you remember you're driving through Tornado Alley. Have been within a ¼ mile of a tornado 3 times now.

I remember when they'd do EAS test runs and when I was younger, I was scared so much and I was in the fetal position in the corner of a couch arm, during it all my great aunt would have to comfort me and I really thought I'd die. My parents say that sometimes they'll do a test run during the night while they watch a movie and still to this day, I get a shiver down my spine from the dreadful EAS alarm.

i have my radio on 24/7 in my room and let me tell you, it is a whole different level of fear when you are falling asleep and suddenly get jolted awake by this horrid sound of a thing

Fun fact: this alarm was used in the movie "The Purge" and also in real life it is used as a siren activation tone (I don't know about the latter).

I remember a few years back, this sound went off on everyone's phones and the living room TV, nobody though much of it. We continued to watch the storm... Until the sirens went off... Before anyone asks, the reason that we didn't think much of the EAS is because I live in a state where tornadoes aren't common and we've gotten more EAS false-alarms than anybody in the state can count. But the minute we heard the sirens...

Last year I heard this blaring from my friends phone and I just sat there and thought what is happening just when I heard lightning and thunder and rain pouring down, that night a decent few Inches of water was on covering the floor.

I vividly remember hearing this being in a hospital parking lot after visiting a family member. It was late at night and raining, the car radio was glitchy, and this started as a weather warning with a robotic voice saying to seek shelter. So unnecessarily terrifying 😭

I hate it when it’s late at night and I wake up to this thing going off. One time it was like 2 am and I heard it go off followed by the sound of notifications from my weather app, during a thunderstorm. The best I knew how to do was pray that it wasn’t a tornado cause I live in Houston and we rarely have tornadoes so I’m like freaking out, Europeans will never understand.
