USA: First Lady as puppet master? This bizarre appearance by Jill Biden fuels the rumors
Joe Biden's family is encouraging the US president to persevere in the election campaign against his likely challenger Donald Trump. Sources close to the president said that Biden and his family met at the Camp David country estate on Sunday. The president was urged not to give up despite his poor performance in the televised debate against Trump. Some relatives also criticized how Biden's staff had prepared him for the TV duel.
Biden spent the day with his wife Jill Biden, his children and grandchildren. It was a long-planned trip to the presidential residence in the US state of Maryland, where photographer Annie Leibovitz wanted to take a portrait of the president for the upcoming Democratic Party convention. At the same time, the opportunity was to be used to consider together how to deal with the criticism from within the ranks of the Democratic Party after the debate debacle.
Although his family is aware of how badly Biden performed against Trump, they still believe he is the best person to beat the Republican, said four people close to the US president. They believe he is capable of holding the office of president for another four years. Jill Biden and son Hunter in particular are of the opinion that the president should not give up.
Biden had appeared uncertain in the TV debate, rambling and giving at times confused answers. His campaign team has spent the past few days trying to keep donors and other supporters on board, while questions are increasingly being raised within the party about whether Biden should stay in the race. At this point in the delegate process, Biden would likely have to drop out so that a new candidate can be put forward.
Prominent Democratic politicians publicly expressed their support for the president on Sunday. "I don't think Joe Biden has a problem leading (the country) for the next four years," said a close ally, Democratic Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina. "Joe Biden should continue to run on the basis of his experience."
Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat and Baptist minister from Georgia, said he has wished more than once that he had given a better sermon on a Sunday. "But after the sermon was over, my job was to embody the message and be there for the people I serve. And that's what Joe Biden has done his entire life," Warnock said.
But some Democrats were concerned that Biden's campaign and the party were not taking the debate's implications seriously enough. Former Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, who served with Biden in the Senate for more than two decades, called the debate a disaster from which Biden would not be able to recover.
Harkin suggested that Democratic senators write a letter to Biden asking him to give up his candidacy, he wrote in an email to supporters obtained by The Associated Press. The letter was first reported in a column by Iowa journalist Julie Gammack.
Harkin wrote that the country is going through a dangerous time and that this is more important than Joe Biden's ego or desire to remain president.
However, in a conference call with influential party members, party chairman Jaime Harrison and Biden's campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez expressed optimism about the future. The other participants were not given the opportunity to ask questions. Several participants described feeling like they were being asked to ignore a serious situation.
