"We Are the World" was a charity single for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie who sang on the song also. It sold over 20 million copies. The guy who sang with "such passion" is Bruce Springsteen and "this chick" was Cyndi Lauper. The guy with a "unique tone" was Bob Dylan. The two guys "stealing the show" were Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder. You're right this was one of the greatest musical collaborations ever.

Best part of this song was Quincy Jones, the gentleman conducting event, a great man on his own who put a sign at the door of the studio for all the artists as they came in: "Check Your Egos At The Door".

What was so amazing about this song to us back then was that every voice was instantly recognizable as belonging to a huge star. It was almost unbelievable to see them standing around together like this, swaying like a high school chorus. Simple little song but it moved the whole world.

I’m just here for the legends young people never recognize, like Al Jarreau( RIP) Kenny Loggins, James Ingram (RIP) , Smoky Robinson , Bette Midler, and Daryl Hall. Iäve always loved Paul Simon and just about everything he has ever done musically, and it's such a shame that no one seems to recognize/remember him anymore. After all, he's composed so many songs that literally everyone recognizes even today. He's a legend.

Netflix just released a behind-the-scenes documentary about this song. It's called The Greatest Night In Pop. It tells everything from who had the idea to the repercussions. Michael Jackson might be the most famous in that room, but there are many legends there. Stevie Wonder is a living legend, he sings the same way to this day, it's worth knowing more about his songs and work and Michael Jackson revered him.

I have loved this since first hearing it on MTV a month after my second child was born! Just a room full of the most talented and beautiful people! Sadly many have left this earth.

For those that don’t know, the song raised 28 million in 1983 to feed starving children in Africa . Bob Geldof, the producer, wasn’t satisfied . He wanted more. He booked Wembley Stadium and the run down JFK Stadium in South Philadelphia in 1985 to host the event. Acts from all over asked to perform. In the end, they raised $140 million in one day. I had it on MTV for almost all day.

in the 80's, race, gender etc. wasn't like it is today. people of similar thinking and appreciations got together without regard to exterior appearances. The new narratives of identity politics has ruined many of theses moments by "celebrating them as special" for something that was commonplace 20 years earlier. Sorry to get political but many of us miss the idea that we are all the same, and no one needs to point out differences when they don't really matter.

That this song was ever made is so unbelievable - and they must have been exhausted afterwards. Recorded after the music awards show so instead of partying they went recording - Michael didn't even think he was going to sing he was just co-writing... :-)

The whole world came to a step when this premiered on MTV. It was simulcast on 90% of radio stations (even country and classical formats) and several cable TV channels. Cars on the road pulled over to listen. All the singers were superstars of the time as well as legends! EPIC!

This song has a very special place in my life. 1986. An event you rarely hear of anymore but was all you heard about leading up to it. Hands Across America. I was a part of a group of 8 representing out school in Portland. During the time holding hands, someone started singing this song and everyone there joined in. It was not planned for that to happen but standing on the west Bank of the river and hearing not only those beside me, but also those on the east Bank singing, as well as those on the bridges to the north and south was very memorable.

I have seen a bunch of reaction videos of this song, but never before have I seen someone so unaware of who these artists were.
