*THIS SCRIPT CLARIFIES INDIVIDUALS NAMED IN TESTIMONY AND GIVES THEIR STATUS*
EDITORS NOTE: THIS MATERIAL MAY CONTAIN SEXUALLY EXPLICIT MATERIAL AND STRONG LANGUAGE.
Four hours of sometimes combative grand jury testimony by U-S President Bill Clinton played out on televisions and radios around the world Monday.
Clinton was bitter about the tactics used in the Paula Jones lawsuit -- and he declined to specifically answer some questions about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.
In the face of repeated questions from prosecutors and grand jurors, Clinton said he was determined to protect his own privacy, and that of his family and others.
Clinton sparred with prosecutors over the question about whether he had denied to his aides that any sexual activity -- including oral sex -- had taken place.
He said that since oral sex didn't amount to sexual relations -- under his understanding of the definition -- the question didn't deal with possible perjury.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
(Off camera) Mr. President, were you physically intimate with Monica Lewinsky.
"Mr. Bittman (Robert Bittman, Deputy Independent Counsel) I think maybe I can save you and the Grand Jury a lot of time if I read a statement which I think will make it clear what the nature of my relationship with Miss Lewinsky was, how it related to the testimony I gave, what I was trying to do in that testimony. And I think it will perhaps make it possible for you to ask even more relevant questions from your point of view and with your permission I'd like to read that statement."
(Off camera): "Absolutely agreed, Mr. President."
SUPER CAPTION: US President Bill Clinton
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"When I was alone with Miss Lewinsky on certain occasion in early 1996 and once in early 1997, I engaged in conduct that was wrong. These encounters did not consist of sexual intercourse, they did not constitute sexual relations as I understood that term to be defined at my January 17 1998 deposition but they did involve inappropriate intimate contact. These inappropriate encounters ended at my insistence in early 1997. I also had occasional telephone calls with Miss Lewinsky that included inappropriate sexual banter. I regret that what began as a friendship, came to include this conduct and I take full responsibility for my actions. While I will provide the Grand Jury whatever other information that I can, because of privacy considerations affecting my family, myself and others, and in an effort to preserve the dignity of the office I hold, this is all I will say about the specifics of these particular matters. I will try to answer, to the best of my ability, other questions, including questions about my relationship with Miss Lewinsky, questions about my understanding of the term sexual relations as I understood it to be defined at my January 17, 1998 deposition."
SUPER CAPTION: US President Bill Clinton
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And I believe that is the definition that most ordinary Americans would give it, if you said Jane and Harry had a sexual relationship, then we're not talking people being drawn into a law suit and being given a definition and then a great effort to trick them in some way. But you're just talking about people in an ordinary conversation. I'll bet the Grand Jurors, if they were talking about two people they know and said they have a sexual relationship they meant they were sleeping together, they meant they were having intercourse together so I am not at all sure that this affidavit is not true -- that it was not true in Miss Lewinsky's mind at the time she swore it out."

This happened when I was in high school, and I've since changed my views about the whole situation. The most shameful thing he did was to take advantage of a young woman like that, and the most shameful acts were perpetrated by the Starr investigators, who kept digging for dirt on Clinton despite failing to make a case on the original purpose of the investigation, with no concern for the collateral damage along the way. Now, we are all familiar with Kavanaugh, who was part of the Starr investigation and kept pushing to ask the most lewd questions possible to shame Clinton (and uncaringly shatter Ms. Lewinsky's life). This was the time when Newt was leading the GOP, and he was the congressional godfather to Mitch McConnell, by showing that he could score political wins by acting AGAINST the best interests of the country. Plus, they were all hypocrites: Newt cheated on all his wives (and divorced of them during their cancer treatment) and Starr cheated on his wife and got fired as the president of Baylor University for ignoring the problem of sexual assault on the campus. I am continually amazed at all the seemingly innocuous decisions made by single individuals (or 2-3 in some cases), such that if any one of those individuals had not made precisely the decision that they ended up making, this country (the world even) would likely have avoided the catastrophe that was the endless war in Iraq. If Newt had not shut down the govt which amazingly led to Clinton meeting Lewinsky, or if Clinton had just kept it in his pants, or if Monica had not been hot for Bill, or if Starr had not extended the investigation into the affair, or if Linda Tripp had just shut the F up, or if that butterfly ballot design in Florida had been corrected (i.e. this caused all those Buchanan mis-votes), or if the Supreme Court not made such a horrible decision in Bush v Gore, then Gore would have easily one the 2000 election. AND when the planes hit the WTC on 9/11, it would have been Gore instead of W in the oval office making the decisions. AND we likely wouldn't have invaded Iraq, wouldn't have wasted all those trillions of dollars, and wouldn't have caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands.

@@rinosanchez2150 Well, I agree about the Supreme Court decision re: Bush v. Gore, but in terms of the Lewinski scandal - I wouldn't argue that hurt Gore or lead to GW Bush, because polling showed Clinton's approval actually _went up_ after the impeachment trial ended (and failed to impeach him) - he left office with an approval rating around 70%, far higher than every President since. Lewinski had nothing to do with Gore anyway, and he didn't do anything wrong in relation, so if anyone cited that as a reason to vote against Gore: they weren't going to vote for him in the first place. In terms of 9/11: not only do I agree that Gore would've at least not invaded Iraq - the irony is that Clinton was keen on going after Bin Laden, including targeted bombing campaigns when the CIA felt they'd located him in the mountains of Afghanistan, which happened while Lewinski was in the headlines, so Republicans criticized it as a "wag the dog" tactic to distract from that, while they also criticized his intelligence focus on Bin Laden/Al Qaeda, to the point the Bush Admin basically ignored intelligence warnings from Clinton holdovers. Those very same Republicans or just plenty of average Americans dared to say people like me (19 or so at the time) who were in the then minority against war or blindly supporting the Bush admins policies at its outset were "with the terrorists" and un-American for it, when 20 years later, of course they pretend they were against it the whole time - like Trump, who only ever came out as a critic once the majority of the country finally jumped ship on support for it.

@@ericblank9729 The statement completely takes the wind out of their sails. He presents himself as the considerate one in the room, to protect others and the office, as the gentleman refusing to go into lurid details about sexual acts. To me, And after really looking into it, I feel like Linda Tripp felt jilted after being moved to the pentagon. Yes there was a huge $20,000 pay raise attached but Linda took pride in serving in the White House. And after they moved her to the pentagon into a cubicle she felt like she had the floor swept right from under her. When Monica told her about the affair she felt like this was her chance to get back at the Clinton Administration for what she felt like was demoting her. I do believe Linda did begin to see her as a friend and probably often forgot she was on a mission to expose former president Bill Clinton. Betty Curry was smart, she knew what was going on and wanted no part in it, she did her job and minded her business. Linda wanted to go down in history as exposing a scandalous relationship because she felt like she was reduced to nothing, she justified backstabbing Monica by saying “it’s the right thing to do” “Monica is in pain and he’s manipulating her” “I may not have her as a friend in the end but it’s the right thing to do for the American people.” Linda had one goal sabotage the Clinton Administration. But in all fairness Bill did this to himself, he knew the heat he was under especially after the Gennifer Flowers case and he was still facing scrutiny with Paula Jones. He couldn’t help himself. I believe he did it to the other woman. It makes me wonder, if Linda had stayed in the White House and befriended Monica somehow and she told her about the affair would Linda keep it hush hush?

Not really. When he said "revert to my former statement", he's referring to the part where he says that he will not give specific details about what sexual acts occurred, to protect the privacy of him, his family, and others, as well as protecting the dignity of the office. He's not saying that he did any of the things that they asked about, just that he's not going into specifics. By taking a stand against revealing all the lurid details, he flipped the script on his interrogators. Amazingly, he makes himself out to be the principled one, while the prosecution's questions made them look like pervs, rudely prying into his private life and reveal all of these lurid details.

Young intern spending some unchecked time in close proximity with the president, by then a known cheater and womanizer. She was young, naive and wasn't aware of the potential repercussions of the whole thing. 2. People who call Monica a "home wrecker", FYI, people IN the marriage wreck their own marriages, not third parties. How do we know Bill and Hilary's marriage was not already over before Monica even came into the picture? How do we know Bill did not make it seem like his marriage was an open marriage to Monica? Its sad that the world convinced her to apologise to Hilary...Monica did not need to apologise to ANYONE. 3. Monica Lewinsky was made to sign contracts to not share her side of the story for a decade which was basically Clinton's abuse of power, denied jobs in her field everywhere in USA...shamed for her entire life, bullied, harassed, trashed, eventually she moved to London and studied social psychology at LSE to understand what happened to her..she tried to share her story now to help others who have been victim of shaming and bullying survive the pain.

I was in middle school when this was going on. I was a junior in high school on 9/11. Big events shape the views of generations, it seems. The Vietnam war for the previous generation, the Great Depression and world war 2 before that. The baby boomers really seem to have been to blame for the problematic loss in the values that created a great nation. Not perfect by any means (there’s the whole slavery thing, of course), but all things considered, a great place of freedom and opportunity. Certainly much better than anywhere in the Middle East or any third world country (I mean, just look at present day Mexico). It appears the values have changed. People no longer value monogamy, chastity, or the nuclear family unit, many feel entitled, men are demonized for simply being men, there is a movement that tries to make a case that gender is a choice, young unmarried and irresponsible girls that get pregnant are rewarded with a tv show and fame, convicts that are “hot” are made into celebrities for simply being “hot...” I think more and more people are gonna start waking up and pulling out of society in the ways that they can. At least, I hope so.

Walter Williford It seems like you contradicted yourself. You say that people don’t value chastity, monogamy or the nuclear family unit. Yet you say men are demonized for simply being men. Usually the meaning behind “being a man” is having affairs and flirting with other women

The facts are he is human - now that does not say it was right because it was not! The President is held to the highest standards and be damn near perfect! He knew what was at stake yet he could not control his human instincts. Most Americans will always remember this bad choice and when they see him or hear his name that’s what they will automatically revert their thoughts to his inability to control himself. Of course it was disappointing but I forgive him - I was 16 when this happened. It took enormous balls to come clean like he did now granted I initially he was not truthful. This could have been incredibly worse. Personally I think he was a good president and he fell victim to his urges.
