This may be a dumb ? , but what is it that gives the Huey that distinct sound?

That is not a dumb question. Long story.... short. The Huey was pretty much designed to be shipped / flown to Viet Nam. That means the rotor blades had to be "foldable" so the aircraft could be packaged for shipping. Because there are only two blades & the Huey is a big heavy helicopter, the blades Have a large cord (long root). So... When the aircraft is in forward flight the two rotors are at different angles of attack (pitch) so the blades snap back and forth between the two angles of attack causing the slap or pop heard when the Huey flys. (Big helicopters like the CH-53 have 7 blades so there is a smoother transition between pitch angles)
