Small towns are dying. They were once the heart of America...such a shame.

They were never the heart of anything....they were and are just small towns.... Hearts produce goods and services people need which small towns never did hence why they die

The population of America became majority city dwellers in 1900. Rual areas have been slowly dying for the last 124 years. As their population leaves only the elderly stay and as they die the towns get smaller and smaller .

At 9:07 entering Tucumcari on old 66, couldn't help wondering what it was like when my dad as a teen with his large family in a Packard touring car on their way to visit California in the mid 1920s on the 'new' 66 were in the same spot. What a relief to stop, stretch, and maybe a cold soda pop after hours of 35 mph dirt road... Many buildings that are now ruins weren't even built yet.

I like the format. Get gas and go! I had to put my hand over my heart when you went past the Big Texan in Amarillo. This gives the viewer a sense of what traveling across America is really like. Your European fans will be shocked at all the space. Last time I was in Tucumari, NM I stopped at Tee Pee Curio and turned the wife loose while I took a nap for an hour. We stay in Gallup, NM when we travel I-40. I am glad you featured. "Standing on a corner at Winslow Arizona Park". I was hoping you would as it was on your way. A great start to this series. Showing the travel between your major attractions is a nice change of pace. You did hit all the high points along the way and this video give us the viewers a sense of the distance you have traveled so far. Thanks again for the best entertainment value on KZfaq.

Been through much of that. Ate at the Big Texan several times. Not the best steaks, just famous for their 72 ouncer challenge. Been through Tucumcari last year, Gallup, drove through Hobbs, been stationed in New Mexico in the Army so I've been to Truth or Consequences ir other small towns. Just love road trips. So when I retired I bought a Ford F250 FX4, 6.7 diesel. Love that truck.drove past the Very Large Array radio telescopes. Been to thr Barbed Wire Museum east of Amarillo. Roy Orbison's hometown of Wink, Texas. Been to Clines Corner and the curio shop. Been to Albuquerque, okd Albuquerque square, Santa Fe and the famous church with the spiral staircase built without nails, Chaco Canyon, Dulce, Abiquiu--home of Georgia OKeefe. Just so much to see.

Another comment is that I saw some JB Hunt cars on one of the trains you passed. On these cars was the word "intermodal". What that means is that JB Hunt is picking up items from the factory or port by truck. Then the long haul shipping is done by train. The delivery is again done via truck. As this gets large trucks off the road and as trains are much more fuel efficient than large trucks, I think this is a very good idea. Intermodal shipping also reduces the risk of fatal accidents and wear and tear on the roads.

Very good video. We just took a similar trip in January, but via I-10(we live near Austin). We went to the Quartzite, AZ gem and mineral show. The towns we visited were Balmorhea(including the Texas state park), Van Horn, El Paso, Las Cruces, Lordsburg, Deming, Bisbee(side trip), Tuscon, and Phoenix. As to gas prices, we stayed one night in Blythe, CA. Gas prices are $1 higher in CA than AZ. The saddest sight on the whole trip is the devastation caused by oak wilt west of Fredericksburg, Texas.

Old Route 66 had so many quaint small-towns. Interstate 40 bypassed them and no one stops at those little towns anymore. You can still drive on much of Route 66. Just gotta drice a lot slower and its a lot bumpier.

LOVE your videos! Spent Basic Training in Amarillo, TX in 1966! Base no longer exists but then it had B-52 Bombers with Hydrogen Weapons aboard and I still remember Sergeant Mechanic pointing to them (and the guards with Shoot to Kill Orders_---and saying if you must go AWOL run to the West and NOT toward the Flight Line!
