In America, lobby groups, corporations and billionaires invest millions of dollars to ensure that the ‘right’ candidate wins elections. It affects everything from the selection of local officials to presidential elections and creates countless conflicts of interest, undermining what used to be a model democracy. And it has a serious impact on people’s daily lives. Drug prices are the highest in the world. Tax rates for the wealthy have fallen. Climate change is being denied. The impunity and extent of this is staggering. For many, this is nothing less than “legal corruption”.
Today, America “is just an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery”, said former president Jimmy Carter himself. Rules seem to have been designed to be bypassed, supposedly impartial judges are elected with the help of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. We follow candidates on the field during the electoral process and hear from people whose lives have been directly affected.

The system is hopeless broken, unless we have voter financed elections this country is doomed. We must take big money out of politics. This isn't a left or right issue they both are complicit.

But here's the thing - I think it IS a left/right issue. The right wing fight the HARDEST to keep big money in politics. The supreme Court decision to overturn citizens united, it was conservative groups financed by billionaires that made it possible. Democracts are corrupt too but the republicans are on a whole other level.

Thank you for the item. As an old fogey - Hahaha! - I have watched this process consciously and carefully for more than half a century and my conclusion is to pose the question: "What is Democracy in 2024?"

Just as one can not have a rational analysis of America without discussing race, one can NOT have a rational analysis of America without discussing CLASS. And one could even argue that, in the year 2024, the LATTER is of more significance than the former. (And I say that as a highly race conscious BLACK MAN!) The rich have a considerably developed sense of class consciousness. The poor, it saddens me to say, do NOT. So long as that foundational reality remains, more or less, unaltered, I really don't see America changing all that much. The faces will change as the decades roll by, of course. But will the essential structure of RULE? No!!! The future of this Republic lies, as always, with "We The People".

Until citizens united is overturned, nothing will change.Politicians can speak great until they are elected and then they turned into dumbasses when the money starts flowing in the near direction

I just love how there are all the examples (which are true) of Republican based money influencing but next to no examples of the same thing in the Democrat party (which is also true). The fact is our system is horribly broken, with both parties totally beholden to a relatively very few (I would estimate no more than a hundred) very rich special interests that literally rule the rest of the population solely for their own benefit.
