Well, IT SNOWED! Last week we were reviewing the USA Trains Rotary in 1:22.5 (G) scale. And we said if it snowed we would test in with real Utah snow.
We are adding several modifications to the USA Snow Plow. First, we. are converting it to a rechargeable battery. Better torque and performance, We are also adding a Delton tender rebuilt into a freelance D and RGW rotary tender. Changing couplers and a few other small details.
Anyway, one week ago it laid down our first snowstorm. A wet sloppy mush of slush. It was about 38 degrees and snowing... Anyway, the plow could not bush through that slop. BUT we did get some great photos of operations in the snow on our garden railroad. Including night photos.
By the next morning the new snow was cold and powdery. AND the battery was installed and this time, some success!
Much more to do so we will be adding a third part to the review of the USA Trains Rotary Snowplow!

I lived at Tahoe for two years. Four feet was a normal storm. Record accumulation is 22 feet. Three years ago they almost matched that. A friend sent a photo of his street. The banks on the sides were 30 feet tall! The lane in the center was about 12 feet.

Honestly your right the snow blower is designed for looks not function. You'd have to change the blades. The narrow openings are pushing snow more than they are scooping the snow. Maybe 3d printing better blades could be an option. But still, it looks awesome. Thank you for a great video👍

In real life, OY was coupled to two K36's or K37's ... another engine ran between the plow and the engine pulling the shoveling crews bunkhouse, dining car and a flanger. I suspect the middle engine was to help either the crew or plow. Even at that, I think around 1957 they got trapped for a week up on Cumbres Pass. My home was half a block away from the roundtable in Alamosa, it it was quite a sight watching the plow being dispatched. OM was idled in Chama because it didn't have superheaters and was very inefficient, but for some reason they had to list it as available ...

Used to hate dealing with that kind of snow since it was heavy to shovel and would ice up badly if the temperature dropped. Not as bad as the even wetter variety, technically known around here as "elephant snot", but still bad enough.

reminds me of a video someone I knew from the local G scale club had done. Hand made wedge plow mounted on a flat car. The plow was brass so it had some weight. The bottom had part of a windshield wiper blade on it to avoid shorting out the rails and a there was hinge made from an old leather coat so the plow could move without necessarily derailing the car it was attached to. Wonder whatever happened to it as Lenny has since passed away...

I was born in the southwest coastal desert area, raised mostly in the southeast, had a few childhood years in Rhode Island; I don't like cold, I don't like snow, yet have always thought that trains look grand in the snow and would actually like to have a house and make a garden railway where I could run trains out in the weather. But NOT in tomorrow's weather though! "... with gusts as high as 43 mph."
@ToyManTelevision

Nuts weather! We had an “inland hurricane” a few months ago. 110 mph winds. Thousands of trees knocked over. Including on on the railroad….

Other commenters need to remember that, first this is a MODEL, and second it is 25 year old technology. It is still an assume model and with the modifications and improvements you are making, it will be even better. Andrew Schock did have a good idea though, add a flywheel. It is too bad that the rotor is fixed, an adjustable rotor would be right up the ally of master modelers, like yourselves, a hint to a future project. ;-)

I'm assuming you would have seen it but this reminds me of the 1950s Southen Pacific documentary "Snow on the Run". I think the term for that wet snow you have is "Rubber Snow" which even the Railroads didn't blow but plowed because it would just curl off the right of way. I found this documentary on KZfaq years ago so I would assume it's still somewhere on the tube.

Maybe you need to have those large snow plows like the RGS 02? I guess the snow plow may nned a little more weight and the rotarys blades are too scale to grab anything than powder snow? It is a neat model and it is nice to see the C19out, mine is at the customs after 4 weeks in a warehouse in Copenhagen, Denmark. I hope the import fee issues will be done soon so I get mine before Christmas. Merry Christmas and enjoy the Hollidays!

Pure water is a perfect insulator. It is the minerals suspended in the water that conduct electricity.
@pbyfr
@pbyfr 2 жыл бұрын
Snow is mostly pure water (and even a lot more of air), and pure water don't have a good conductivity (it's salts in water that conduct). And air is very bad at conductivity. With 12 V, it would conduct at all.

Spectacular Scenery and Christmas cards I seem to remember years ago when battery operated drills 1st came out people who made scratch built engines used battery operated drills for their drive motors how about putting one of those battery operated drill motors into your snowplow that would give you plenty of power and you can use the battery pack from said battery operated drill Let me know if you use my idea

Great videos on snow ploughs, inspired me to get a converted railking o gauge version for my On30 layout. The problem you are having is that you don’t have scale snow. You could always rig up a mesh above the layout to filter the snow to the right size? (Before it collapses under the weight of the snow) As you can tell I know nothing about snow as coming from southern uk, a couple of millimetres of slush brings the whole country to a halt!

That is a model T Ford. In the 1920s a company bought a bunch of those and added the treads and skis under contract to the US post office. These trucks were used in rural free delivery mail service. I’ve seen two in collections. Really really fun!! I understand they worked quite well. In snow… down side is they could not be used on dry roads. No way to convert them back. But in many rural areas there was no snow removal or plows then. So the roads were snow packed for months

Here's video I shot 13 years ago snow plowing on my garden railroad (I'm located in MA): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g62UhNmhmZm8eYU.html . The locomotives used are a oair of Accucraft live-steam Shays (a 3-cylinder & & 2 clyinder), both outfitted with RC control. An uncle of mine who just happened to show up to visit at that time was biven quick instruction on how to run the RC on the 2nd locomotive; I was busy running the lead loco & operating the camcorder! ;) Enjoy your channel very much!
