The Upper Big Branch Mine disaster occurred on April 5, 2010 roughly 1,000 feet (300 m) underground in Raleigh County, West Virginia at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch coal mine located in Montcoal. Twenty-nine out of thirty-one miners at the site were killed.

The upper branch disaster was sketchy to say the least. I am in no way shape or form attempting to insult the men that died in the incident, but I will openly criticize the witnesses, that chose to obey the company, rather than to show humility and respect for those who died and for the families by divulging what caused the incident. They chose job security over their fellow workers. A company, that will hide the truth simply to avoid a payout to the families, should be burnt to the ground. Again, I am not trying to insult anyone here. I have the utmost respect for the miners and for the families, that have had to endure such pain, even after all the time that has elapsed.

A mine company coercing its workers to favor the company over their fellow man? In West Virginia? I simply don’t believe it. /s

Well said Russell. There's so much underground mines get away with.

You have never had to feed a family and worry about losing your good paying job for not doing what they told you to do.

It wasn’t just company men, state and federal inspectors should be at least questioned about this report, because there’s no way a methane fire “stayed” lit and in one spot for minutes, and how did methane come down to the Longwall if their ventilation was working

Upper Big Branch (Massey Energy) was a nonunion operation. Meaning the guys had no one to protect them from management. If you didn’t do what you were told to do, you were fired and they would thing someone in that would do whatever it took to get the job done. At the mine I worked at, we had a brand new continuous miner crew come in from a non union mine. They ran coal but did it outlaw style. Every working face has to be rock dusted to within 40 feet of the face. Technically, you’re supposed to shut down every 40 feet and rock dust, but most crews usually went 60-80 before dusting. State and Federal inspectors were usually pretty lenient. The crew from a non union mine wa ms running one day and I just happened to be on their section with one of the toughest West Virginia mine inspectors around. They had went some 140 feet and everything was black, no rock dust whatsoever. Needless to say, the mine incurred a huge monetary fine and every miner in that crew had their miner cards stripped away from them along with being fined $300 each. I was on the mine and safety committees at the time. Yes we represented them, but half assed. They were warned numerous times and finally we said fuck it

New Zealand 2010 the same year as the Upper Branch mining disaster in the US.29 NZ miners were killed in a mining gas explosion. The 29 workers were never recovered.Considered too dangerous for rescue services to do so and in 2022 that is still the case.No one was charged or went to jail for the 29 lives lost.Safety and warnings of the dangers were ignored. One family member said in NZ you can go to jail for killing a kitten. When workers are killed no one goes to jail.

As a retired mine electrician, I'm surprised that the mines inspectorate hasn't adopted regulations and qualifications similar to The UK's "Mines and Quarries Act" for mines of coal and stratified Iron stone, or the Australian NSW Coal mines Regulation Act. Both are very similar to each other. But pretty stiff. I in my capacity of longwall electrician have stopped production due to failure of the two methane detectors, the shift's mine Under Manager didn't dare try to censure me, he wasn't very happy with me though!! I warned him, if he tried to over rule me, I'd be on the phone to the District Mines Inspector, the Mine Electrical Engineer in Charge and the Mine Manager. Which could have got him on a charge of interfering with an authorized electrician carrying out his duties. He'd have lost his Under Managers qualifications, had a hefty fine and might have faced jail time too. Having read the governments papers on this accident, I still haven't come up with why the face wasn't stopped due to high levels of methane. I was always used to power being shut off at 1.25% methane in the general body of the air, ALL men withdrawn to fresh air stations or the surface when methane levels reached 2% in the general body of the air. Both way before the gas built up to explosive levels of 5%.

There was an edit to the original video that had more "downtime" in it. I don't recall what exactly it was titled, or if it still exists.
