June 2023 update: updates to the Luna software and Mac OS Ventura make it easier to set the old iMac as your main display. Once you’ve got the Luna apps up and running on both computers, the Primary Luna will ask do you to choose between left, right and custom. If you click custom, you are taken to the display settings in your new Mac’s OS where you can choose Luna Display as your main display. That choice is not the first option in that menu but is found under ‘color profiles.’

Great video, clearly explained and very useful. I have a question. Did you transfer all your data from the iMac to the Mac Mini before you set things up using Luna? I have a 2014 iMac which is nearing the end of its' useful life and am wondering what best to do. I could keep it and get a Mac Mini and Luna, or get a new iMac and dispose of the old iMac. Getting rid of the old iMac when it's working just fine seems a real waste though.

Glad you appreciate it. You can transfer all your files from the iMac to your Mac Mini. The iMac’s sole purpose in this demonstration is to be used as a monitor and nothing else.

Thanks for the video Lamar. Really helps with my current dilemma. Just got a couple of questions that I wish you could please let me know the answers to. Just wondering if the Mac Mini is still able to browse internet after the Ethernet cable been connected to the iMac for display purposes? Furthermore, if the setup is as is per your video, does the iMac need to be connected to the internet at all?

Yes, you can still browse the internet on the Mac Mini with a WiFi connection or you can get a USB Ethernet Adapter to have another Ethernet port for the internet. No, the iMac does not need to be connected to the internet. 👍💪

Once I set this up, I wasn't clear how I can switch back to using my iMac as a computer (vs just a monitor) and when I do so will I be able to use my new external monitor as a secondary monitor for the iMac? Oh and thanks for the great series of videos you've posted on this topic!

Hi Zarela, you're welcome. Glad you found the video helpful. Not sure, when I tried to use 3 external displays on my M1 Mac Mini it didn't work. There are some other ways to get around it I think.

Zero lag method. You can use a thunderbolt2 to thunderbolt3 adapter and a thunderbolt3 cord or USBc to USBc (depending on year of IMac).The only issue is you have to have keep a keyboard synced to the iMac. Wake the connected iMac and press cmd+f2 on its keyboard. It syncs immediately. I also use this method to use my 2014 iMac as a monitor for my newer MacBook Pro.

Thank you for the video! i purchased it and love it so far. Just one question, is there a way you can use both imac and mac mini back and forth. Once esc out of the 2nd display(mac mini), how do you go back again to mini display from the imac display?

I haven’t tried it with video editing. Yes, you can switch between the Mac Mini and iMac. Just hold down the escape key on the iMac to go back to the regular iMac. 👍💪

First of all, real great pacing! I like how you shot everything, you're speaking style, how efficiently you communicated the info, everything. Really great job! I have a need quite similar to this and I hope I can do it and that you can help me! I'm waiting for my new 14" MacBook Pro to arrive and I already have a 2010 21" iMac. Since the MacBook Pro does not have a legitimate Ethernet port (although I DID buy the Thunderbolt 3 to Ethernet adaptor) can I do the same thing or does this only work with the Mac Mini? My iMac has a mini display port on it, but the graphics card in the iMac only allows that to be used to feed a signal OUT to another display. It cannot be used as in input. My ideal goal would be to have the displays both on my 14" MacBook and my 21" iMac working as a multi-display solution. Would help my work flow IMMENSELY! Ultimately, I'll get multiple "legitimate" displays to serve this purpose, but cash-wise I pretty much spent all that is practical on my MacBook and would love to avoid more expenses for awhile!

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback, I really appreciate it. 💯 Yes, it works with MacBooks as well. If your iMac has macOS 10.11 or later you should be just fine connecting it to your MacBook using the Ethernet Adapter. 👍💪

Hey, I notice you said it's $79, but on their web site it says it's $129. Did they raise the price THAT much? Or did they redesign it and that's why the price is higher? Any clue on that?

However, it does work great and I'm able to use my MacBook with the iMac when I need a larger screen. Thinking about buying a mac mini with this setup as my home desktop. Thanks Lamar - great video!. Just one question: is there a way to set up Luna Display without needing a second monitor - just the old iMac? I've just bought a Mac Mini M2, and I can't get it to work with a couple of older monitors (Dell and Acer) that don't have HDMI ports. I've tried using a VGA to HDMI adapter, but nothing happens. Do I have to obtain a second monitor just to set up the iMac as my only display, and then I can use the iMac as my only monitor? Or would I be better off getting a different adapter to connect the Acer or Dell, and forget about the iMac? The older monitors seem to have DisplayPort ports - maybe a DisplayPort to HDMI or Thunderbolt adapter would work? Many thanks for any advice!

Thanks for this video. I'll need to reference it when I get a new mac mini. Xcode and the app store have made my 2013 iMac obsolete. I am not quite clear, however, if it is possible to set up Luna Display with just the mac mini and the iMac. Do i have to set the iMac up as a secondary display first before making it the primary?

Hello Lamar, thank you so much for this professional video. I have been using the Luna Display for almost two years. My main concern with using it is that I have to be connected via Ethernet to the modem for live-streaming. This has been the most headache for me because I cannot connect the Ethernet cable from Mac mini to iMac 27inch (late 2015) if I am using the Ethernet cable to be hardwired in for live-streaming. Any solutions? Thank you

Hi Felicia, glad you like the video. I haven’t tried this, but I’m pretty sure it will work, and that’s to use a USB-C to Ethernet Adapter for your modem. Keep the Ethernet connection going directly from your iMac to the Mac Mini. Then plug the USB-C to Ethernet Adapter into the USB-C port on the Mac Mini and connect your Ethernet cable to that for the internet. This was a great step by step thank you... really helped me. Wonder if I can throw a tech question at you. I'm set up thanks to your intructions, with a new M2 Mac Mini driving an iMac (2015) as the main monitor. It works great. However, I just noticed now that, when the Mac mini goes to sleep, the iMac monitor stays on the black "waiting to become a display" screen and I have no way of waking the Mini. From the black screen all I can do is hold the esc key to quit Luma display and start over. Is there a way around this?

You’re welcome, glad you appreciate it. Try to configure them to sleep at the same time without inactivity. For example you could set the Mac Mini to 15mins and 15mins on the iMAC.

Does the Ethernet cable need to be a crossover cable? I’m unable to connect via Ethernet using a regular cable. Also, trying to use the iMac as the main display is not smooth over wiFi despite having a strong connection. Had high hopes for Luna Display but I’m going to have to return it as there is too much latency and stability issues.

No, you don't need a crossover cable. I just used a regular ethernet cable. Have you tried another Ethernet cable? I wouldn't recommend it for use over WiFi. Luna Display now supports Thunderbolt connection, so that's another option. 👍💪

Instead of disabling secure disk and using a automatic login, would it be possible to screen share a headless M1 mac mini to the iMac, then login to an account on M1 mac mini to start the luna display program. Then on the iMac run the iMac local luna program. It might duplicate the screen sharing session initially, but one can exit screen sharing without exiting the login session. I’m looking for an option that maintains some security of the M1 mac.

No, because you got to have a way to log into the M1 Mac Mini at first. If you wanna do that, what you can probably do is set the Luna applications to launch at startup on both Macs. If you have a single user account on the M1 Mac Mini, just try to type your password on the keyboard a few seconds after it boots up then wait to see if it pops up on the iMac. I haven't tried this but it could work. 👍💪

To go headless (older iMac as only monitor for the new Mac mini) do you need to buy a separate mouse for setting up the Luna Display? I only have the original Apple mouse and keyboard that came with my old iMac. I have not purchased the Mac mini yet.

Thanks for the instructions. Was able to connect my mini1 to a 2011 monitor. Is it possible to connect a second 2011 monitor to the current work station? Would I do 2011-to-2011 via thunderbolt between the two monitors, or the non-secondary monitor directly with the mini?

You’re welcome. This is gonna require a bit of experimenting since the M1 Mac Mini has external display limits.

I just set this up on an iMac, but have run into an issue where I’m not able to type from the keyboard however I can press the escape key to exit out of Luna display. The only way the keyboard seems to start working again is if I reboot the iMac and then it starts working on the Mac mini. Have you come across anything like this?

Yes, according to astropad (maker of Luna) it does. On their web site, specifically in reference to M1 Apple product it says, "For M1 Macs with Apple Silicon there are some hardware limitations on the number of external displays allowed. Since our Luna hardware uses the same industry standards as a regular monitor, LUNA WOULD COUNT AS A USB-C DISPLAY. Be sure to check Apple's device technical specifications to see what is compatible with your Mac. " I hope that helps!

May I ask what old iMac model do you have? I have a late 2013 Catalina, 10.15.7 version. It said this version does not have the target display function.

I just installed macOS on the external drive and set it as the main boot drive for the iMac. You can find some tutorials on how to do it, in the future I might make a video on it. 👍💪

I wonder it this will work if the ethernet cable is plugged into a dongle that is plugged into the macmini? ie the new imac ethernet port is on the powebrick into the fllor and it would be better to plug the ethernet cable into a usbc to ethernet dongle.

I want to use my late 2015 iMac as my only monitor on my m1 mac mini, with the Luna Display. I have a couple of questions. 1. Do I setup it up initially as a secondary monitor with the Luna Display software or simply install the primary Luna Display software? 2. If so, do I then change the fire vault and other settings on the mac mini? 3. After installing as a primary do I turn the iMac on prior to turning on the mac mini? Any help before I try to get it going would be great. Well, I got it working as my main monitor but there is a noticeable amount of mouse and screen lag. I am connected via network cable, not wifi. Is that normal.Other wise it works fine.

Glad you got it working. You can try a higher rated Ethernet cable. Cat 7, Cat 8 Etc.

Thank you for this video Lamar. I bought the Luna Display device and just received my new M1 Mac Mini. I followed your video set by set and did all the steps. Everything was working fine I cold see that the 2 devices paired up nicely. Then when It came just using the IMac as the monitor for the Mac Mini there was an issue with the Mac Mini showing up on the IMac. Nothing changed I was unable to just have the IMac as the display for the Mac Mini. I don’t know what I missd but I did all the points listed but nothing changed in the end, the secondary monitor works but the IMAC will not show the Mac Mini? I can’t figure out what I did wrong ? If you can help me to get this working I'd appreciate any help you can give to make this work.

How would this work if all you had was the old iMac and the M1 MacMini? Also are drives connected to the iMac accessible to the M1 or do they have to be through the M1?

For the initial setup you need to connect the M1 Mac Mini to a monitor or TV and install the app and enable the settings. Drives need to be connected to the M1 Mac Mini. 👍💪

Trying to use target display mode from MacBook Air 2020 M1(Big Sur 11.6) to iMac 21.5 mid 2011 (High Sierra 10.13.6). Cable that i had been trying with apple thunderbolt usb c to thunderbolt 2 adapter and thunderbolt cables combo. It didn't work. Any cable idea? Thanks!

Target display mode does not work on M1 Macs. So you need the Luna Display Adapter. 👍💪

Thanks for an excellent in-depth video. My question is - How’s the lag? I’m considering using my 2015 iMac as a display for an M1 Mac mini (while I wait for the M1x machines to finally arrive). I’m mostly thinking of Final cut use. Do you think it’s a viable option?

You’re welcome, glad you appreciate it. I’ve never used it for video editing, just more of a second display. Occasionally there’s some lag, I wouldn’t recommend it for long term video editing use. Then again my iMac is 2013 so it might even perform better on your 2015 iMac. 👍💪

I feel like I waited too long and missed the M1 party, so hanging on for a few more moths (hopefully) for a big old upgrade - either an M1Pro mac mini, or a fancy new M1Pro iMac (if it's not ridiculously expensive). If I get mini, I expect I'll shell out for a decent 4k monitor tbh.

I haven’t used it for video editing. You can try to set it up with a high rated Ethernet cable or Thunderbolt Cable and see how it performs for you with video editing.

Here's a question for you: is it possible to create a user account for security purposes the same way you would in Windows or is that not something you do? I tried and all I figured out is that a guest account doesn't work for that because you can't save anything.

Keep in mind he's not connecting to a second monitor, he's connecting to *another computer*. Connecting a second monitor is just as trivial on a Mac as it is on a PC.

If you have HDMI out (like most Macs back to 2010) and Thunderbolt or USB-C or Firewire or a Display port (like most other Macs), you can easily plug in two monitors without any extra work. This is specifically for repurposing an iMac as a monitor. It's not analogous to just plugging in a separate monitor, regardless of operating system.

(That Studio and Studio display is a joke for those wanting to update their 27") Will this still work using a new M1 Mini and my late 2012 27" iMac running Catalina 10.15.7? Only 1 connection to the iMac. With the new M2 Mini you might be able to connect additional monitors since they support more external displays.

2013 iMac. Yes, it will work with your 2015 iMac. Luna Display now supports Thunderbolt connection so you can try that. Also, an Ethernet adapter should work. Thanks for the support. 👍💪

Glad you appreciate the video. For this setup you’re not migrating any of your files, you’re just simply using your iMac as a monitor for your Mac Mini, and all files are still stored on the Mac Mini. 👍💪

I recommend going with the Ethernet connection to reduce lag. It should work with your 2012 iMac as well. 👍💪

Hey Lamar, as well as you have explained this there's something I must be missing. I wanna use the OS from both Macs (2020 intel AND M2 mini) and still work both screens together. Simple right? I do audio production so I wanna freely drag and drop between both Macs. Possible? Side note.... My second monitor is the old Thunderbolt Display with the hard wired TB out cable which is the only way for the M2 mini to hook up. (so they say). HDMI/ Individual TB cable/ ethernet/ does not work. Only the built in . Does all that even matter?

You can only use it as a screen, not for side by side between both OS. They have Thunderbolt adapters you can buy, like TB2 to TB3.
