Step into my world and enjoy the beauty of winter! I learned to love winter by getting out and painting what I saw and experienced on my winter outings.
Whether I'm snowshoeing, skiing, running or walking in nature, I find beauty everywhere I go, and it inspires my paintings. I'm a better artist for having spent time in the scenes that I paint.
This video not only includes a painting lesson as I sketch a winter afternoon scene, but glimpses into the scenery that inspired it.
Supplies Used in this lesson (I receive a small commission when you purchase using the links below):
**Paint: Daniel Smith Naples Yellow, Lavender, Ultramarine Blue, Hematite Genuine, Cobalt Violet Deep, Raw Sienna bit.ly/2cXeE8J
Schmincke Blue Violet bit.ly/2j03wfs
Sennelier Cinereous Blue bit.ly/2DOmNem
**Brush: Escoda Versatil #10 rigger (my favorite!!) bit.ly/Rigger10
Princeton Neptune Script #4 bit.ly/2jQv1po
**Paper: Blick Premier Watercolor Block, 7x10 inches bit.ly/2B1Kltf
**Palette is from robax.com

Though I don't paint as loosely or as expressively as you, I just love watching you paint! You have a love of painting that the other watercolor painters I follow just don't show in the way that you do. That love and passion is so contagious and when I am a little lost as to what to paint, I watch one of your videos and it always ends up inspiring me to paint something. I sincerely thank you for being so transparent in your love of watercolor painting; as transparent as the watercolors you use! It is so very inspiring. You also have led me to a brush that I adore and now have in a few different sizes, the Escoda Versatil Rigger! Ah, I just love it and have it in a 10 and a 6 and I am amazed at the new and exciting ways I can use these brushes. So, thank you for being such an inspiration and for sharing your passion for this wonderful medium.

I wondered how the lavender representing the snow would work but it did! Beautiful subtle colors. Thanks for that fresh shower of snow--felt so good since it's over 110 here in AZ. I used to snow ski and really miss the beautiful, quiet solitude as I slid down the hills. You are so much fun to watch.

I love you, Angela! Not only are you a wonderful watercolorist, but you are so human! You show a lively sense of humor both while painting and living. I use the end of the video above as an example. You made me laugh out loud. Thank you for being you.

I've lived most of my life in southern California and I love it here. I've also lived in Chicago, IL and Ohio. I actually love painting snow scenes and that fresh powder that the birds haven't even touched is so pristine. I think it's the quiet and solitude that draws me to it. I love birds and spent many negative degree mornings dumping big ice blocks out of bird fountains and refilling them with pitchers from the house because the hose was frozen.

Your winter is beautiful - how you felt about winter before you came to love it is exactly how I feel about the unbearable heat and humidity in Brisbane, Australia - unlike being able to dress up and be outdoors in the winter, it is impossible to keep yourself cool outdoors in the summer - you are sweating all the time, literally water falling off you 24/7, the only place you can hide is indoors in the air-con - and that's not a life... to be cooped up indoors for 6 months of the year because there is absolutely no way of being outdoors without sweating or being cooked alive by the sun... Yes, I loooove the northern winters, I have lived in them and one day I may be lucky enough to be able to live there permanently and be like you and spend as much time as possible outdoors in it...

Magdalena French I live in Brisbane too and I so agree with all you say. The intense heat and humidity is literally making me sick. DH is British and I wish we’d never returned to Australia. Ah well, c’est la vie.

Jeanette Gillings Yes, I understand about feeling sick from the heat, for me it’s like having heat stroke where I feel nauseous, have a foggy brain & am exhausted where I seriously need to lay down to recover, & as added bonus my feet turn into ‘concrete boots’ from the low pressure of the humidity - my legs and feet swell up like balloons & sometimes I can hardly walk from the heaviness of them... what is DH please??
@jeanettegillings7202

Magdalena French DH = Darling Husband 😊. Take care. I know there’s not much we can do but persevere. It’s hard though. Have you tried elevating your legs with an ice pack underneath them? I find that helps me. I get migraines and I’m physically and mentally drained from the heat. People who love living here.... I just can’t understand them. But to each their own hey?

Angela that looks like so much fun and what a scene to paint. This winter we just had flurries in Tennessee and I miss the cross country skiing when I lived in Michigan. Now it is Spring in full bloom and I hope to paint some of it. Thanks for sharing your fun and beautiful scenery. Your sketch is really wonderful.

I love winter, February in particular -as the sun is coming back. I believe you have longer and even colder winters than we do. We just had another snow storm yesterday of well more than a foot of wet, heavy stuff. Oddly, I grew up calling it a toque too. But, I don't think I've called it that n years. What a great winter scene. Thank you.

I love winter and snow. I am happiest when it is cold outside. In NC we do not get that much but when it comes I am out with my camera. After watching this I believe I can consider painting some of my pics. Thank you. Angela, you and the Mind of Watercolor, Steve Mitchel are my 2 favs. I have learned sooooooo much from both of you and it has made me a better painter. Lovin this. I loved the video when you were both together. Do that again.

Angela- I think it would be very interesting for you to explore further the subject of taking a small painting and translating it to a larger piece. You mentioned in this video that it does directly translate, could you demonstrate this further? Even a couple a segments would work...Thanks for the consideration

Hi Angela! It's Brenda from WC Workout and now Mastery here. ? for you. In a couple of the pieces you've shown here, you have bright orange and/or yellow light against blue sky or trees. How do you do that without getting green or mud. Opache colors? Right now I'm experimenting with a painting a piece from a photo that has ominous feeling sunset with bright yellow, orange and brownish clouds right up against a blue sky. Running into head scratching, pondering, difficulties with it. As I'm also wanting to avoid hard edges. If you explain it in this video, pls forgive me. I stopped it to ask as soon as I saw those first few pieces. Thanks, for all you do.

Raw sienna won't make green. The warmer/redder blues work better like the ultramarine she used.
@salliewhitney5889

She also used Naples yellow which will not produce green with most blues. It tends to go towards a neutral. Naples yellow is a strange color (IMO) it’s an opaque pinky yellow, not a coral or peach tone and not transparent, but very useful, as demonstrated here.

Jefi, I moved from Cedar Crest, NM a 1 1/2 years ago. The snowy winters are amazing, especially when the sun is bright and the snow is coming down. You could do a painting similar to Angelas with the snow that's still left on the Crest.

@@judybreedlove5348 Thank you for that. I looked up Cedar Crest, & you were up by Albuquerque, where I've heard it snowed sooo much this year. I'm down on the border, & it maybe snowed twice this winter. Didn't even stick! Luck of the draw? I've had to use others' references but I find your description 'amazing, especially when the sun is bright and the snow is coming down' very intriguing. I look forward to that.
