I see lots of opportunity for these cards... Holiday fabric for the holidays.. Use novelty fabrics for those special occasions.. Birthdays, anniversaries.. Etc. Even if it's a card just to case hello.. You can fussy cut pieces to create a card too. Thanks Robin!!

That’s what I was thinking Laura. Not everyone is going to be interested in the fussiness of tiny scraps but the technique can work for larger pieces of fabric too.

That free motion stitching that you are doing is a good way to practice before you do it on a big project to get experience.

I am going to save my little bitty scraps for my little niece to arrange them on cards and teach her how to sew. My nephew would probably enjoy making them too.

I’m sure the little kids would love arranging scraps. If it’s easier for the kids they can use a glue stick to hold the fabric in place while they design their project. Or you can use a larger piece of interfacing for them to layout their designs and then cut It into several cards. That’s what I do sometimes especially if I have larger scraps. Have fun!!

Thank you! My button project is on hold at the moment. Mostly due to time but I also need to find more buttons. I’d like to buy them in bulk, and at a good price of course 😉, but I’ve been mostly seeing the smaller buttons for crafting. Right now I need the medium size maybe about 1/2”. It’s a long term project. I’ve been busy with videos and video related things and haven’t had as much crafting time as I would like. @@rsislandcrafts Just re-watched the video to refresh myself on your techniques. I mentioned in the past I have a rotary pinking blade - I can't remember, but did you ever do a tut on using one? Also, I was thinking I would do the top stitching before cutting with the pinking shears ✂ then you wouldn't see the return stitching at the edge of the fabric - just a thought 🦩🦩

I haven’t bought a pinking blade yet. I forget and then remember when I work on a set of cards again 🤣 When I made the recent set of 52 cards I did It differently. I don’t remember what’s in this video. This time I pulled a length of the fusible interfacing that was long enough to fit my table and be divisible by my finished scrappy card sizes. I later put my scraps until It was covered. Pressed It well. Cut strips. Stitched the strips to hold down the scraps. Cut to card size and then three rows of stitching to hold It onto the small bit of card stock that I use to adhere It to the actual card. Then pinked the edges. All straight line stitching that basically runs off the edge of the cards. So far I like this new mega process.

@@rsislandcrafts Yes, I guessed when you made a large sheet then cut them individually you would get a quicker/better finish. I was just thinking about if I made the odd one then that's what I would do. I have lots of small scraps and plenty of cheap fusible interfacing,🤪 so nothing to stop me

The cards end envelopes are made from card stock or scrapbooking paper. The thin stuff for the cards is interfacing.

I'm so new to sewing as in I barely know how to turn the machine on. I've made a crappy potholder & after a year of studying youtube for making SIMPLE zipper pouches something went wrong & haven't returned to that project. I want so much to make these cards....looks pretty easy peasy & I have everything except tape & pinking scissors. What I would like to know is do you use a walking foot for these (she asks trembling)? It doesn't look it & I'm sure you don't use a reg needle....right? I discovered you last Sat., have been binge watching & have liked & sub'd. Tfs

Welcome to our little crafty family!! Thank you for subscribing. I hope you will feel comfortable enough to ask us anything. If I don’t know the answer someone else may know. I also make video tutorials on request as long as I can figure out how to do It myself. I have a walking foot and use It occasionally but to be completely honest I’m too lazy to go through the trouble of changing the foot. My other feet just snap on and off but the walking foot involves screws. 😉. The pinked edges just help with the fraying of the fabric scraps. It also gives It a little pizazz. If your fusible goes right to the edge then you can skip the pinked edges and see if you like them that way. Yesterday’s tutorial video (July 24, 2020) has links for my basic zipper tutorials. Near the end of the video an iCard will pop up in the upper right corner of the video with links to those videos. Or you can just search zippers on my KZfaq page. I hope that helps.

I’m sorry. I had a feeling I missed something. Thank you for re-asking. I am a rebel. Those in the know say you should never sew through paper and that you should change your needle with every project. I don’t follow that rule. Right now I am not seeing any quilts where a new sharp needle is very important for accuracy. I’m sewing through paper, felt and random fabric projects. Right now I am not changing my needle nor am I using a special needle. When I am going between paper piecing string blocks and sewing quilt blocks I do change my needle. After I finish sewing my paper pieces blocks I remove that needle and put in a new sharpe needle for sewing my quilt blocks. The needle that I used for the paper piecing I stick It through a scrap of felt or scrap fabric. It is then stored with my needle storage. It’s the only needle I do that with so I know It is a needle for sewing through paper etc. If you use a needle book then you can use a sharpie to write on each of the pages. One can be for your used paper pieces needles. That way you can easily find a specific needle and not grab an old dull needle by accident. “They” say that sewing through paper will dull your needle quickly. I’m sure that is true but as I said as long as I am not sewing for precision then a slightly dull needle is okay. I can tell when it’s time to throw away a dull needle because either my stitches start to skip or my machine makes a thumping clunking sound when I sew. Sure sign of a dull needle. Did I answer all your questions? I get easily sidetracked and a bit chatty and I tend to miss things. 🤣. Just grab a yard stick and poke me every now and then to keep me in line.

If someone like you who sews beautiful & cool stuff & also teaches us yet tells us you get lazy about the walking foot & skipping rules about the needles for this project is ok by me. I fell quite relieved as this could be a bit of an expensive venture for me being on fixed income. I make simple jewelry & crochet & knit but i am not buying needed replacement tools to do the job every time I turn around like I feel I might be doing with sewing. I really appreciate your time & the 2 tips about knowing when your needles might be dull...super good to know! Thanks much :)

You’re very welcome. We see so many gorgeous perfect quilts online that when we see our own we pale in comparison. Those gorgeous quilts are made by professionals for a judged contest or to sell a line of fabric. I make quilts and other items because I love to create and I really love the look on someone’s face when I give them something I’ve made. My quilts are meant to be used, dragged to the beach, and made Into blanket forts. I tell my friends and family that if they wear out a quilt I’ve given them then I’ll just make them another one. They’re obviously quilt worthy. I’m on a very tight fixed income. I understand about getting the most use out of our tools and supplies. I was raised to mend my clothes and not just throw them away and go buy new. I just wish I knew how to sew back then. It’s okay though because I’m having fun playing with my scraps now. You’ve learned how to get the most out of your yarn and where to find the best deals and with time you’ll figure out this sewing thing too.

Hi back this year for some more help. Did you sew around the edge of that straight quilted one to hold it in place or just pink it....back stitch it? Last year I made one but sewed around the edge after straight line quilting it....want nothing to come apart! Still a reaaaal newbie here. Also I can't make a zig zag edge work...to close or to far from edge Stitch length and and ndl position always just off. Have a great weekend! and thanks for sharing

Since the fabric scraps are attached to a fusible interfacing I don’t stitch around the edges. When I do the straight stitching I make sure there is a line of stitching on the left and right edges of the cardstock. I also lay the double stick tape on the edges of the card stock. In the end it’s just a card and while you and I may treasure It most people may not. Plus, It shouldn’t be “manhandled” very much. I have seen cards and fabric postcards here they’ve done a stitch around the outer edge. I hope that helps.

The double sided roll of tape does seem to have a firm hold. I don’t have much experience with double sided tape so I can’t say if it’s stronger than any other type. It’s meant for scrap booking 🤷‍♀️ I love playing with scraps and trying different ways to use them. I don’t save near as many scraps as I have in the past. I’ve learned to be a bit more particular about which scraps I save otherwise I would drown in all the bits and pieces 😆

I never drop my feed dogs and do free motion quilting on my domestic. I have found my machine does better with the feed dogs up.

I use wax paper to removed glue from iron.

I haven’t tried wax paper. When my iron gets really dirty I use a wet cloth but if I’m in the middle of a project and I need a clean iron I just wiped It off on the side of my board. Not the best option but 🤷‍♀️
