Recently I acquired this Gibson ES 339 and wanted to record everything exactly as it happened the first time it hit the workbench. Along the way I ramble about various guitar related things and determine if it's a good guitar or a Gibson authentic dud.

I should have clarified in the beginning that I acquired this on the used market, not new.

Hey BB! Great to see you man. What do you think of that plugged in? Those are just my size semi’s and I’d be tempted if it’s light and toneful.

Hello five watt world! This guitar sounds good. I really like Lollars so everything sort of gets compared to those in my mind. I have to weigh it and maybe could do a quick demo of the sound. I have a custom shop 339 as well but this one is a little better in overall feel.

@@bbmade I'm seriously considering the JoanJett 339 ,I have a Walnut 330 and want a 335 but that JJ is pretty cool.

Todd Flowers - I haven’t seen that 339 but will have to check it out. I have that 335 video in the works but the guitar sold in two days on Reverb so the push to get it done isn’t as bad. I love these style guitars and it’s why the ones I build have two f-holes.

Nice guitar! I have an Epi 339 I really like. Maybe someday I will upgrade it to a Gibson. I love that I can get it in a double gig bag. Every time I want to take my Gibson 335 I have to dig out the hard case and carry two cases. First world problems...

Thanks for stopping by! This is a good one, didn’t need any work. Hoping to finish a comparison video soon of this guitar and a custom shop version made 10 years earlier. Really enjoy your videos guys, keep up the good work.

You clearly know a lot about setting up a guitar. That said, it’s tough watching you put the full weight of the guitar on the cable and output jack when you set it on your work mat and play the guitar.
@bbmade

Thanks for the message! I always tell myself it’s time for a right angle plug for the cables at my bench. It’s a metal plate so the jack is fine but it does stress the cable. I appreciate the feedback.

I acquired a Gibson 339 studio few months ago, I have also 2 les paul and a SG, the 339 was setting very bad and different imperfections are present.

Hi Dan, that is a bummer. In my experience that is a Gibson-wide issue and not specific to any one model. I have another 339 that came from the custom shop. It was an absolute mess and needed a new nut and the bridge saddles re-notched along with a fret dress and set-up. I’d recommend anyone bring a guitar in for a set up by a pro if they don’t do their own set-ups. It can feel like a whole new guitar afterwards. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks Todd. I buy, fix and sell guitars and amps. I ponder keeping them all a lot of the time (no matter what the brand) used guitars need work and I want them to be perfect before I sell them. Every store I did repairs for was a Gibson dealers so I’ve seen the ups and downs with them since 1994.

No, it was definitely a used guitar. Sorry if that wasn’t clear. It had normal play wear for a guitar it’s age, nothing unusual. I buffed out the back to a high gloss. It’s a great guitar.

Ringo Gingo - I hear ya. It would be cool to have more finish choices. They’d probably stamp it custom and charge twice as much. Maybe 2020 they’ll add some options, NAMM show KZfaq extravaganza soon.

I wasn't referring to you personally but some act like they are luithers and as soon they unbox before playing the instrument they tear it apart to see if they can modify especially on affordable instruments. But in your case you have a expensive guitar and if you know what and what not to look for I take my hat off to you. I'm in the process of exchanging a Telecaster I bought and it was defective. Mine was noticeable and in away I was glad because I have no idea to know what would be wrong if it was internal. I changed the strings on it and I noticed it had a minute chip on the body and it wouldn't stay in tune because the bridge was loose due to a striped screw on the bridge.
@bbmade
@bbmade 4 жыл бұрын
Phillip Holt - I know what you mean. Sorry to hear about your Tele. I was a bit more sarcastic in this video because the previous three Gibson’s I bought and sold had some really bad issues including a 2017 ES 335 that needed a refret because the factory did such a horrible job preparing the fingerboard before installing frets. I love Gibson guitars but decades of fixing them has formed a bad opinion of their quality control in my mind.

If you are just hoping to get a good Gibson guitar , that's not a good sign. Wow ! if that is a new guitar it has too many scratches , wow!

I know it's easy to be critical, but the title doesn't read "Bought a used Gibson". So we assume it's new with issues, at first. Then you don't really do anything with it; you don't play it much, it's really not getting reviewed or compared to something else, either. I don't see a point to this.
