In English, we also say I think it was, but we also say I thought it was. So is the expression 하던 것 같아 ambiguous if 같았어 is never used (did you think it was that or do you think it was that?)

I have a question about the part where it’s kinda like an upward intonation at the end of the sentence - how would these 2 sentences be different? They are both about the past right? 철수가 매운 음식을 안 좋아하던데요 vs 철수가 매운 음식을 안 좋아했는데요. Thank you!!

I've watched this video alongside studying with the Korean Grammar in Use - Intermediate book, and it said that you can use past tense in front of 던데요, when referring to things that ended in the past 🤔 Can I assume it's really rare?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 2 жыл бұрын
~던데(요) attaches to the Plain Form (not a standard verb stem), and Plain Form isn't only present tense. You can use past Plain Form if it matches the context. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJ9iZaiG2bClk2Q.html

I’ve seen the term 나왔다던 but shouldn’t it be 나왔던? I’m not sure why is “다” is retained in the first one ?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the context, but it could be a combination of this form with a quoting form. I also have several videos about quoting forms on my channel :)
@d3mur3
@d3mur3 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoBillyKorean Oh okay, thank you! I will check those quoting forms videos. And oh, for context: “오늘 작업하다가 나왔다던 곡은 뭐예요?” I think it’s still a question about “the song that came out” (?), just not sure why the 다 is still there in 나왔다던.
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 2 жыл бұрын
@@d3mur3 Yes, it's a quoting form + 던. I recommend watching my full live stream about quoting forms :)

A line in a song I saw was "그토록 사랑하던 그 사람" and I would translate that as "that person that I loved so much". But I thought you use this only for an action that wasn't only done once. Is that a different usage here or is that just because it's basically poetry and just not the most natural thing to say?

좋은 수업 감사합니다. 그런데 '내가 살던 집'에 그 행동이 지금까지도 계속 되고 있을 수도 있다는 뉘앙스는 전혀 없다고 생각합니다. 았/었/을 넣으면 과거의 행동이 현재는 완전히 달라져 있다는 뉘앙스가 첨가된다는 식으로 설명하시는 것이 더 정확할 것 같아요. 감사합니다!
