So now I'm Hungry! Love the painting. I always wonder for the reasons people vote something down. The video is a very good qualitiy, the information is sound, so where is the reason for a thumbs down? If you personally don't like grapes or cheese, that's your thing. Sometimes I really would like to know why...

Haha I was craving cheese the entire time I drew this! 😂 I don't really know.. Maybe they are so miserable with their own lives that it makes them feel better to bring down other people? 🤔 I guess that's what I signed up for with KZfaq! It happens to everyone, unfortunately I don't worry about negativity because the people who's opinions I care about aren't the ones leaving negative feedback! 😊

Kirsty thank you for creating these videos! You are right in sync with my style I'm trying to achieve. Could you tell me more about your projector and how you get your outline? I used a friends' and found it hard to decide what areas to use in my outline. Do you have a video of how you do that? Thanks so much!
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome 😊 The projector I have was a gift, so all I know is that it was super cheap and probably came from China 😅 It's literally a portable projector for camping to watch movies etc It's not an art projector, but I know you can get some good ones by Artograph I don't have a video about using it unfortunately! It's totally up to you how much you put in your outline, but mine changes depending on the subject I'm doing Sometimes I'll just do the main shapes, other times I'll also block in where the colours shift/where the shadows are on more difficult subjects like portraits Some people find it easier to include heaps in their outlines, whereas others find it too confusing to look at and just want the main outline of the subject It's all personal preference really I'm not sure if that helped at all, I didn't really answer your questions very well haha 😂

Thanks for sharing,! I have light gray Pastelmat. How do you decide which color of paper you use?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, for me it doesn't matter too much because I cover the entire painting with pastel so you don't see it (and once it's framed, that little bit of paper around the edge gets covered as well) But it can be easier to work on a colour that matches some colours in your drawing so it's not too much of a distraction Some people like to use complimentary colours like using a more red/orange shade if they're doing landscapes/seascapes etc because it can enhance the pastel painting... But I believe that only really works if some of your paper shows through the end result So it's really up to you, I usually pick a colour that matches some of the colours of the reference photo, otherwise I just stick with a mid tone brown or grey colour for everything 😊

I am bingerwatching all of your video’s, I did not know you yet. But I am glad I found you, I do have a artist block for quite a while. I follow you on Patreon to. But who was your inspirator. (Jason Morgan?) I do like the way you make your video’s. Can you tell more about the sketch you make...ok transfer, I do this to, but I make to much lines and that’s is trouble... I see you make closed lines...per color? Thank you so far, hope to see you make more people portrets in color... 😉👍

Haha I can tell from all the comments that you've watched a few now! Thankyou, I'm glad to have you on Patreon :) I do most of my learning by trialling things and physically doing art, but I learnt some things from people like Jason Morgan, Lachri Fine Art and Kirsty Partridge - but I watch a whole load of tutorials if I'm starting out with a medium because everyone has their own way of doing things... then I work out what I like doing and what works for my style of art But I feel like the actual style of my art is my own, I don't like spending as many hours as Jason does on his pastels for example... I like it to look realistic from a distance, then be able to see the strokes when you get closer (whereas Jason tends to make it look really hyper-realistic - which doesn't interest me personally anymore!) The outline is different for each subject, depending on how difficult the subject is for me If I'm doing a dog portrait or birds or something that is more familiar to me, I'll generally just block in the main outlines, but for more intricate subjects or subjects I'm not too familiar with, I may include more lines! I usually do the outlines of the main shapes, then I sometimes also outline where the main highlight/shadow areas stop and start (or where certain colour shapes are) if they are really obvious in the reference (like this piece) but it really depends on how familiar I am with the subject/how much I feel like free-handing/how much time I have/whether I'm trying to get it to be exact to the reference photo (like for a pet portrait commission) or whether it can be a little more loose etc I do plan on doing a few more human subjects/landscapes/still life in the future because I know a lot of people want them! But I do prefer wildlife the most :)

Are the conté sticks light fast? What steps do you make before you start to draw? I like to put my referencephoto in posterize with apps, for my underpainting. Do you use this to? How do YOU do this ? With an app or photoshop?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 жыл бұрын
Some of the conte sticks are lightfast! I haven't found an official lightfast chart for conte but there are some reputable people have done their own tests, so I've removed the ones that didn't perform well in their tests I usually have a high saturation/contrast version of my reference which helps bring out the subtle colours/shadows etc a bit better (which you can do in any editing app) I also do colour swatches, especially for white/black subjects so I can clearly see what colour is in what area (because it can be confusing, especially on white subjects) - I actually do this on Microsoft Paint, but you can use Photoshop or any editing program with an eye dropper tool I never used to do a posterized version but I have recently been doing that to the high saturation/contrast version for my Patrons because I mainly use that reference for the underpainting, so it's a bit easier for my students to focus on blocking in colours, without looking at the details - I've been using Photoshop for this but you can do it with online programs like ipiccy and gimp! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7FpnMuktbmlpGw.html This video actually shows a lot of the process before I start to draw if that helps!

Beautiful, need some patience there! Can I ask why you don’t move downwards and out from top left?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 жыл бұрын
Thankyou 😊 Because I like to work in layers So even if I went from top left to bottom right, I'd still end up going back over the top for a more layers I know a lot of artists work in sections and complete each section before moving on, which means they could work from top left to bottom right, but that's just not a natural way to work for me 😊

😂 thanks for your reply, it’s funny how we all work isn’t it. I loved your work, not sure I’m ready for such a large one yet, my sheets are A4 size so will scale it down and give it a try, it really is beautiful, a great lesson in patience, something I don’t have a lot of 😃
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 жыл бұрын
@@dianecuthbertson2686 It is a bit funny! I just can't get my piece to look cohesive if I work in sections (it doesn't really match up well!) Sometimes working larger can actually be easier because when you work small, you can end up doing these tiny little details that would probably have been easier to do if the piece was larger, if that makes sense? It does take a bit longer though!

Making it look photographic merely means tricking the eye to believe that it is a real image. It's only after you look closely that you realize that the subject is actually just a collection of colors and shapes that don't represent reality at all. It never ceases to amaze me how messy and inaccurate an artwork can look when you are pressed up against it and how it all comes together when you step back.
