I have never forgotten this, from years ago -- I'm a mom, I had just gotten off work, I worked a heavy-duty blue-collar job, it was horrible winter weather, so I was in my Helly Hansen rain gear on my way home. I was driving our old work pickup truck. My daughter had called and left a message at work, the SUV we had been looking for, for her, was on the showroom floor at the dealership. I drove straight there, and parked by the big window. I went straight to the SUV and opened the doors, I climbed in the rear to see the inside. It had a custom trim, custom paint job, custom rims, really nice little rig. Yes, I still had on my raingear overalls. The salesmen were all in a big glass room eating ice cream bars, I asked the receptionist for a salesperson. Yes, they could see me out there. No one came out. I hung around but finally left. I was planning on buying that car that day, right then, cash purchase. Olympia, Washington dealership. Kiss my a**.

We walked in and asked to look at some jewelry in the meantime a guy came in and the lady went over and immediately started waiting on him instead because he said he was going to buy an engagement ring. The lady then proceeded to ignore us completely so we walked out of the store. We went to a second jewelry store stood there for 10 minutes no one would wait on us. We went to the third jewelry store and he told me to go in by myself and to pick out three different things and then he would decide which one he was going to give me as a gift. I was greeted by a very friendly young woman she took me over to the jewelry case I picked out three different bracelets. I went outside my boyfriend went inside and got me my gift. He came out and gave me a beautiful diamond bracelet. Then he went back inside for some reason. When he returned to the car he proceeded to tell me he asked for the manager of the store. He told the manager that he wanted to thank him for the wonderful service that he got and that young woman deserves a raise! He also told him the two other stores lost our sale because no one will come and help us.

I went into a department store at the mall to buy my mom some perfume. It was costly but I had my bonus from work and I wanted to buy it for her. I stood in front of the counter and no one would wait on me. Finally I got a manager and told him. He looked at me and said, well you know how much that costs right. I just gave up and left. It was embarrassing to me because other women were looking at me like I was nothing. I would never treat another human like I was treated.

I know of two similiar situations just like this. One of our salesman waited on a customer who was looking at the higher prices items in our store. This customer didn't look like she could buy bubble gum let alone anything else. As the customer kept browsing, our salesman kept insisting she look at the lower priced items. Our salesman who was getting impatient ended up telling the customer we had to verify her credit before showing her anything else in the store. The customer didn't say anything, but kept looking. Our salesman started talking to other customers "during" their conversation. Finally, the customer left our section of the store. She went in the main section and asked for the owner or the General Manager. The owner came out, and this customer asked to speak to him in private. She told the owner what she just experienced, and expressed how upset she was with our employee. The owner deeply apologized, but at this point, the customer had already made the decision she wasn't buying from our company. The owner again apologized. Before this customer walked out the door, she asked the owner to speak privately with him one more time. They went into a private office where this poor looking customer opened up her purse showing the owner her purse was full of $100.00 dollar bills rolled up. She stated she just wanted to show him she was able to afford the $40,000.00 dollars worth of merchandise she picked out, and she was sorry that she wasn't going to able to spend her money here. The owner fired this employee as soon as this customer left. I was very young when I witness this, and I have never forgot it. DON'T ever underestimate anyone who walked through your doors. You never know what they are able to afford. The reason I have wrote this story is because about two years later a young handicapped gentleman came into the store I was working at. NOBODY wanted to help him. I took the time to introduce myself and spent about two hours with this person. Even my supervisor was trying to get me away from this handicapped person. When this customer picked out what he wanted, it came time to settle the finances. The manager asked this person several times how he was going to pay for this $30,000.00 thousand dollar item. Everyone was becoming frustrated with this customer. I stuck with him. The customer asked to make a phone call. Whoever he called, he told this person where he was, and he has made his decision. About 20 minutes later, and man dressed in an expensive suit with a briefcase came in looking for this customer. They went into the managers office. They were surprised to see a very well dressed individual come in to help this customer. This person didn't want to look at any paperwork, not anything. Our manager asked how the payment was going to be made. This person put his briefcase on our managers desk, and opened it. All we saw was $100.00 dollars bill stacks inside of the briefcase. He pulled out 3 bundles ($10,000 packs), and counted out the rest. Everyone else in the store this person talked to tried their best to take the sale from me, or for me to split the commission with them. After the owner heard the complete story, I receive the full commission. End of story. Everyone from this point forward started talking to everyone who came through the doors! Never underestimate a customer! I have a few other stories I could share, but these two are the best I have seen happen right in front of my eyes.

That’s why you should give each customer the same respect as you would like to be treated. I’m not rich but I knew someone who is. We went house buying together and people had a hard time believing he could afford a million dollar home because he was in his twenties and we were dressed very casually, T shirt, khakis. Our clothes weren’t even ironed. Needless to say the real estate agent who worked with my friend to buy his million dollar home got an excellent percentage. The irony? Just several years earlier when I was with someone else who looked rich but was actually poor, the agents flocked to him only to later to find out he barely had a thousand in his bank account. I learned people really do treat you differently depending on how wealthy or poor you look. Note: I said we because I went with both of them but the house buying was not for me since I can’t afford anything. Just wanted to share a story on what I personally witnessed.

What people don't realize is is that younger people looking to buy something expensive OR us older folks, how we dress shouldn't matter. We could be lottery winners... Saving money for years....or inherited a bit of money. I know of a young guy....he was about 25 yrs old then, sweetheart of a kid...whom had inherited millions from his Step-Mom who had died. He was friendly with the security officers in the country club where Id worked as dispatcher on the property. I saw him a few times and chatted to him. He bought a $2++ million home up in the Estates, a huge 5,000 sq ft home. No one questioned him pulling up in an older model black truck. You'd never know he was worth so much. Real nice kid. The other 'rich' kids in the community had Porche, Mercedes, Ferrari's....not this young kid.

I walked into a model home I’d liked for a while, and not one sales associate even greeted me. As couples walked in, (man and woman) they were greeted and offered coffee. Finally, I approached one salesman. He was polite, but I sensed indifference. He seemed hung up on the fact I was a single…..DIVORCED…..female. He said banks are reluctant to give mortgages to my demographic and asked how I intended to finance the house. When I said “I’m paying cash”, he almost swallowed his tongue. They literally fell all over me, coffee, cakes, etc. That was 30+ years ago, things have changed regarding women.

@@mchapman132 Oh my goodness. That initial treatment must have been tough, especially when they shifted how they treated you once you said all cash. Yes all cash usually is preferred in house buying so you take out the middleman. But it was wrong of them to treat you differently from just your status. I would be so upset, i'd probably be tempted to go elsewhere to buy a home, but if that home was a rare find, that would be a different story. Still it really bugs me how mal aligned divorced women are. People automatically assume a divorced woman has problems. Not always the case, wish society didnt make these negative assumptions.

I had a full timer with me and two customers walked in at the same time. One was wearing old jeans somewhat dirty and a t-shirt. The other was in a suit. The full timer came to me and said you take the t-shirt guy. I was happy and my feeling this was someone that may be a good sales opportunity. The full timer kept looking at me and laughing a little. Bottom line is that my t-shirt customer bought 1000's of dollars on merchandise and his customer bought about 20 or less in merchandise. the full timer asked me how did I know. I said you can not judge someone like that. He said I learned something from me. I never forgot this.

I really don't get why these sale rep act like this like bruh it doesn't cost anything to be nice!!! I know working in retail is hard especially when it's commission but like being an ass would only make tbe customers go away. Like you'd rather have some sales than no sales at all. Like I remember going into horrords and was treated terribly. I remember telling them I was looking for a birthday dress since my birthday was approaching and the woman looked at me then said they don't have anything here that'll 'suit' me and just walked away!! Another sale lady was nice she approached e apologised and prooceded to help me. When I bought my dress the rude lady tried to do the payment so her name can appear but i simply said no and waited for the nice lady 🙄🙄🙄 and the look of disgust she gave to me was amazing 🙄😂😂

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER judge a person by the way they look..... I'll tell you 2 stories.... 1. years ago, my boss worked at a boutique a young lady walked in looking like poor, no one wanted to help her except one kind sales lady, was very kind to her... she spend about 2 hours there....all the sales ladies were making fun of her and calling her names.... the lady walked out buying $160,000 and end up giving $20,000 tip to that kind sales lady, that sales lady quit in less than a month and opened her own boutique.... that customer became her customer for life... 2. A lady, was remodeling her house, didn't have time to fix herself walked out of her house without thinking twice about her appearance..... went to the mall to get few things needed for the house...as she entered the store, store manager was watching her and treating her as if she was a thief.....when she walked out of the store, her purchase was amazingly huge.

As and "antiques dealer" - I was exhibiting at a show - when an older gentleman wandered into my booth and began inquiring about some of my most expensive items. He was dressed in very soiled work clothing - and appeared to be "financially unable" to afford the items about which he inquired. Never the less - I spent time showing him each piece, discussing provenance, condition, etc.. After approximately half an hour - he thanked me and said he would "think about" several pieces. I didn't give it much more thought - and continued with the day. That evening, just before the close of the show - the man came back - still dressed the same - and said he had made some decisions! He asked if I would give him a "better price" if he took several items. When he told me which items he wanted - I told him I'd be happy to give him a discount. He said he would pay by check - and that I could call the show manager over to vouch for him. We consumated the sale. When he left - the show manager told me that this man was one of the wealthiest horse breeders in the state - and spent thousands and thousands of dollars at this show every year! Moral of story: "Never judge a book by it's cover"!

Years ago, I took a break from my weekly cleaning to run to the store. I was new to the area and noticed a small custom jewelry shop close to the convenience store. When I went in the jewelry store I didn't expect much in the way of service because of how I looked. But the people there could not have been more gracious. They became the only store from which I ever bought jewelry and I discovered them my first year after college. As my salary grew, I spent more. I also recommended them to my friends. They went from a tiny hole in the wall to a regionally recognized jewelry expert. If you own a business, treat everyone as if they are your most lucrative client. It will repay you tenfold.

Same story. My uncle wanted to buy me the most expensive car. He jokingly asked if they’d take his plane as an exchange. They laughed at him! But he had his own plane!!! He had broken English and was dressed poorly. We were treated badly. Then my uncle pulled out his wad of cash and paid for the car. In full!!! I told the salesman he had no manners and shame on him. Also one day I went to Dillards dressed down and no one wanted to wait on me! The next day I went back dressed very expensively and they were running and pushing to wait on me! I NEVER went back to Dillards again!

Same thing happened to me. I walked into a car dealership with my jeans, a red T-Shirt and a backpack. Even though I could see at least 5 staff walking around, nobody even looked at me. After about 10 minutes of waiting and calling for guidance, finally a young lady came to me. I had actually made my decision about which car I was gonna buy before I went there. However, I started to ask some questions about some other cars there in the showroom, you know, about price, performance, etc. She barely even listened to me! As soon as I told her I was gonna purchase the car I had decided to get and that I wanted to pay the full price on the very same day and wanted to have my car shipped to my house after purchasing, she was not the same person anymore. Smile on her face, friendliness and trying to not lose me to her other coworkers who also approached to us as they heard about the big purchase were the immediate changes in her I clearly noticed! I was offered different kind of drinks, VIP sales area and stuff like that… I actually would’ve walked out the store right away in the first place if I’d known there was another dealership nearby selling that specific car. Never judge people based on the way they look! Never! And: Money is not everything! It’s so sad that money can often change the attitude of others towards you…

This happened to me once. I was still in high school. I won a Turkish language competition and got some prize money. My mom's birthday was coming up, so I wanted to buy her a gift from a high end makeup store I remember I walked in to look at eye creams or smth and the consultant asked me what I wanted. I told her I wanted a wrinkle eye cream (or something like that, I don't even remember now) and she looked me from head to toe and said: "there is no such thing as wrinkles cream". Then I asked what do they have against wrinkles and she kept asking what exactly I was looking for. At the end, she said, that if I don't even know what I want, I shouldn't come into an expensive store and waste their time. Well, honey, you lost a customer who would have bought whatever crap you would recommend, because I had no idea about makeup at the time. I bought what I was looking for in lush, just next door to that "high end" store 🤣

Something similar occurred to a friend of mine. In the most expensive jewelry boutique of our beautiful city a plainly dressed, elderly lady walked in and asked if she could look at the most expensive and beautiful watches they carried. She was not badly dressed, but neither did her clothes look expensive, so no one seemed eager to serve her, except for my friend, who is gifted at making everyone feel welcome. This customer finally placed an order for 11 non-identical watches (different genders and prices). My friend inquired as to who would be the lucky recipients, grandchildren perhaps? The cusromer replied "No, not for the grandchildren but for the staff that has been taking care of me and my husband, who is an invalid, for many years and these are Christmas presents". This was many years ago, around 50, and people were very judgemental about what people wore then.
