Jack Nicklaus' first professional win let the world know what was to come. He defeated Arnold Palmer in a playoff at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club to ignite an all-time rivalry and propel Nicklaus to a record 18 major titles. He relives it in this original USGA film.
The United States Golf Association (USGA) conducts many of golf's most prestigious championships, highlighted by the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women's Open and the world’s premier amateur championships. Based in Liberty Corner, N.J., the USGA governs the game in the U.S., its territories and Mexico.

A really great documentary. I remember Jack and Arnold and the "Rivalry" in the '60s as I am 10 years younger than Jack growing up in the Philadelphia area. It was widely known that Jack was the "bad guy in the black hat" and Arnie was the good guy, the white hat. It was not just at the open in the Pittsburg area. I'm glad the documentary brought out the treatment Nicklaus received in that tournament and how much class Arnold had in handling it. Great job USGA.

As a 25-year-old man who only got into golf two years ago, I use these videos as a time machine of sorts and it has given me a wealth of wonderful content to pass the time by. Honor, Respect, Integrity, and overall Accountability in their characters gave inspiration to thousands of golfers for years to come. After Arnold passed it woke a lot of people up to the terrors of time and a lot of people have come back to these videos for Gary and Jack. The last two Legends of the game. In my own opinion, Tiger is The Greatest of All Time but Jack is a Legend. To be a Legend means to be more than just the greatest.

I would say Tiger was better holding onto 13 out of 14 3 round leads in Majors but Jacks game and personality is class. Personally I have Tiger as the Goat but its very much a debate (unlike MJ vs Lebron for example) very Different players too Jack player within himself and just stayed in contention and striked when he thought the time was right. Tiger just plays balls and and trys to destroy the course and his opponents. Both class both in the GOAT debate.

@@geraldgilpin1966 LOL. You're one of those people?! Yeah, Tiger did roids...didn't he? The longest player on tour who was already dominating everybody did roids. Makes perfect sense. There is literally not one shred of evidence that anybody has ever come up with to substantiate that claim and it's utterly ridiculous. Tiger at his biggest was maybe 190 pounds and he's 6'2". Also his distances never substantially went up at any time which you would expect to see if he ever did them. Just stupid. Tiger will pass Jack's majors record here in a couple of years and leave no doubt so you can hold your little position for now.

Jacks first major was the 1959 U. S. amateur championship. At some point the media stopped counting the U.S. and British amateur championships as majors. I really don’t remember when that occurred. I remember when Jack won the 1986 Masters an article in Sports Illustrated had a picture of Jack with the caption “Day of glory for a golden oldie. Jack Nicklaus wins his 20th major golf championship”. But sometime after that they started counting only professional majors.
@jonburrows8602
@jonburrows8602 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's about the year they stopped talking about the Amateur being a major and more of the time period when the Amateur itself stopped being a major. This occurred around 1965, the year they switched to stroke play (until 1973). That and the rise in the popularity (and therefore purses) of professional golfers thanks to Arnie, led to a reduction in the amount of great golfers who remained amateurs, since so many began turning professional.

Not taking anything away from Tiger and the unbelievable career that he had. The goat conversation has still got to be Jack because of the way he leed his life off the course. He never cussed on the golf course and if he did he damn sure didn't scream out fuck on live TV knowing that the youth were looking up to him as a role model. Stopped smoking and never stayed away from home more than 2 weeks at a time. If Tiger were to have done some of those things then there would not be a debate at all but what goes on off the course is just as important as on the course. Jack may have cheated on his wife but nothing ever was written about it because he was a faithful husband and a wonderful father, he was raised as such! 99-2000 was the best golf anyone has ever played and will go down as such, I am grateful for the opportunity to watch it. Unfortunately in my career as a touring professional I never got the opportunity to play with either but what an honor to witness the 2 best players of all time, we are lucky to have had both of them!

When he's under pressure, Jack seems to be the best putter in the world. It's possible that Crenshaw, Casper and a couple of others are more accurate in general. However these men weren't leading on Sunday as often as Nicklaus. As such? We don't really know how well they hold up when three other PGA stars are charging from behind them on the back-nine. When all the cameras are focused on them and the gallery purrs over their every shot. In fact this is what makes Tiger special in the modern era. He sinks many of those "Must drop" birdie putts. Then he saves par from thirty feet out.

So Arnold 3 putted how many times? Make those 2 putts and he automatically wins by 8. I don't know, but based on that alone, it indicates that Palmer was the better player tee-to-green. I guess naturally people would assume that Palmer wasn't as great as Jack, but I think if his putting were anywhere near as good as Jack, he'd have easily won well over 75 PGA Tour events.

@jonburrows8602

Yes and no. While Arnold was definitely the better overall player at this point in time and should have won this US Open, it didn't simply come down to putting. The reasons Arnie had many more 3 putts than Jack was a factor of him hitting more greens in regulation plus, and more importantly, when Jack did hit a green he typically got it much closer since he hit the ball higher than anyone and his ball stopped where he wanted it to, whereas Arnie had a low, boring trajectory that caused the ball to run out, much harder to judge and get close to the hole.

Also Palmer's putting started to decline in the 60s, while his tee to green stayed strong, just like Watson's did in his 30s.
