I was in the USSR with a student tour in 1991. We were at a flea market in Leningrad and spoke with two vendors who spoke perfect English. The first guy bragged about his new Moskovitch, which he described as the best car in the world. The second guy had an incredible party trick: he had memorized the United States. One guy in our group came from a small town in Minnesota, and the vendor told him street names of the town, places of interest, and his zip code. Perhaps he was KGB.

I can only imagine being someone that just spent 7 years of saving and waiting for a car in the 80’s only to have the iron curtain fall shortly after you purchase it.

I grew up in Moscow and there was a row of garages that we often passed on the way to either the bus stop or the metro, but they were never open... so as a child, I remember, really wanting to go into one because it was such a huge mystery.

I owned an old Moskavitch in the 1990s, they were imported to the UK. Tough as old boots but very very old fashioned

I found a company that sells old Soviet-era cars in the USA. It would be fun to restore one.

I am a hill farmer in the UK and we have two Lada Nivas which we use as farm 4x4s. They are extremely tough, cheap to run, easy to fix and they will embarrass most huge luxury 4x4s off road so they make excellent farm utility vehicles.

That really long car with the mahi-mahi fin was my favorite!

I life in the City where the BMW-327 was build... Those thing cose today about 120.000€ in good condition!

Soviet cars often damage down and were always parked on the side of the road with an engine cover open.

My concern with importing Soviet cars is finding spare parts. In the US a lot of "old" cars use the same seals/bearings etc that are used in newer cars or industrial machinery. Soviet vehicles may have used Soviet bearings and seals, with no western equivalent. It's fun to look at imported Eastern Bloc equipment... but spares have to be considered.

That car you had a picture of with the fin it's also quite valuable. It is a pre-war Czechoslovakian (I think) car...I can't remember the name of it. Jay Leno had one on his garage show.

RATHER AMUSING, THE BLACK LICENSE PLATE STORY!! THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA HAD BLACK LICENSE PLATES MANY YEARS, AND ARE QUITE SOUGHT AFTER SO AS TO HAVE A PERIOD PERFECT RESTORATION!

Interesting note regarding that BMW. In the early days of the US MLM missions, they mention in the reports that the Soviets often used old captured German sports cars to chase them down as the Soviet cars couldn't keep up with the American cars the MLM officers were running around the east German countryside in.

Interesting video. Weird thing about the garages. I honestly thought that the owners of those garages would be living like in the building/house in the same street. I still like the Moskvich 412 with metal bumpers. (check the movie "Balkan Spy" 1984😉) There used to be some soviet era cars in my country. The Volga station wagons however were used as a hearse😬 so everytime I see one I automaticaly assume its a hearse. But lately they have been reduced, their owners traded them for used small cars. Some Lada Riva and Zhiguli rarely can be seen, even more rare UAZ Gazika. Plenty of Lada Niva however since they are still being made.

Oh, I know the situation where you had to take the bus to use your car... my grandma's garage was on the other side of the town than her apartment, that's why there was very little mileage in our Trabant (and because of an eye problem, she didn't like driving at old age anyway). She put around 40000 km's in it in 20 years, I did the same in about 8.

Thanks for an brilliant video as I adore old Soviet / Eastern Bloc cars. There were quite a few available in UK when I was growing up. They were already outdated with lowly trim levels , but sold well new as they were good value for money and pretty tough. When they became 6 or 7 years old they become pretty worthless and you could pick some great bargain runabouts up for next to nothing. I bought a Lada (VAZ 2101) from a neighbour for £60 in 1986 and a Skoda Estelle Rapide 130 Coupe for £65. The Lada was only 1200cc , but a brilliant car, in a lurid orange / brown colour , chrome wheel caps and a black vinyl interior. Skoda not too good, leaked oil and water constantly. Sold both for 5 times what I paid for them , Lada to a guy who wanted cheap runaround and Skoda to an enthusiast. Would love to have either back now but prices have gone crazy if you can actually find one for sale.

The most luxurious and coolest Soviet car is the ZIL-41047, a presidential car and also for dignitaries in the Soviet Communist Party.

In the pictures two American cars appear: one Chevrolet, and on Ford used for ceremonies. Their licence come from 1970s, i'm really curiouos how they got to USSR.

In the Socialist Republic or Romania the license plates with small numbers were usually reserved for the Militia and Securitate (secret police) officers.

When did you first drive and who taught you?

Having lived in Sweden and Norway, the socialism of free healthcare and free university education at the point of delivery is nothing like communism. Socialist countries have mixed economies where people can own private businesses and property. Both capitalists and communists have a problem with socialism.

It would've been more efficient for the USSR to push a de-urbanization program and build millions of small houses out of wood and brick, and offer them to citizens on a lease. They could have spread the industry out and made base model autos available on demand, with consumer credit available to allow financing. The coolest US car of the 1970s was the Oldsmobile Cutlass.
