Hey everyone back with Railroads Online! Today Hyce and I are tackling the route to the coal mine which means we have to do some real narrow gauge railroading! This route is so steep we can only pull 3 cars with 3 locomotives at the same time!

Because this is a podcast, you could pretty much do the menial tasks like refilling the sawmill pond with logs. You'd just need more stories like the sheared driveshaft, the burnout fails, the literal poopton car, the fact that you used to room with Kosmo, and other stories you think your audience would enjoy as being part of the podcast...

As a proud owner of a 2000-something Chevy Astro, I completely understand that story. I have yet to face ABS failure, but that emergency brake is really funky.

@SwordlordRoy Is that a coffee break, or lunch break? There very well might be a second E-brake handle under the dash on the left hand side of the colum. It will be bright yellow and for hand use, it will not lock in place when pulled unlike the foot one.

For your information, jake brakes (the technical term is compression braking) work when the compressed air inside the cylinder is released near TDC during the compression stroke. They use a second set of rockers, above the exhaust valves, that engage buy oil pressure when you take your foot off the accelerator and clutch pedals. The second set of rockers opens the exhaust valve when the fuel would normally be injected into the cylinder. This is why jakes can be very loud and why most towns and cities have signs that say; trucks no engine braking.

In addition to Jake Brakes, a lot of class 8 trucks (semis) can also have electric engine brakes that simply shut off fuel to the cylinders when open, using the engine's massive amount of compression to slow the truck.

Technically speaking, they are called 'Half-shafts' and CV axle for short, and each one always has two Constant Velocity joints on them. Protip: If you go around a corner, and your car starts clacking, that's why, and it needs a new one. Fortunately, replacing them is super easy (barely and inconveniance!)

Unless yer talking about how much torque is required to break the axle nut loose, but they all do that! You made it sound like you had to drop the sub-frame or something...

Diesel tech here, a jake brake works by releasing the pressure created during the compression stroke. The exhaust valve is generally opened about the same time you would inject fuel , some where around 18 degrees before tdc. So the engine compresses the air which uses energy to do so and it releases all that compressed air out of the exhaust so it doesn't push back down during what would be your power stroke. That huge release of pressure is Why they are so loud and why they work so well at slowing you down.

12:00 Hi, trucker here. An exhaust brake uses a flap in the exhaust to partially block the exhaust to backpressure the cylinders/pistons and provide resistance. Jake brakes use a device on the exhaust valve (loads of different ways to actuate it, oil pressure, fuel pressure, electronic, some have their own cams on the exhaust cam shaft) that opens the exhaust valve right before the power stroke letting all that compressed air in the cylinder escape out the exhaust instead of pushing the piston back down which turns the entire engine into a very large air compressor. Engine/Jake brakes are the loud rumbling ones you hear everywhere in the US, Exhaust brakes sound like a whoosh if they make any sound at all.

Fun fact. When you mentioned using multiple class 48s instead of buying a climax, a railroad actually did that with a set of diesel locos for a switching engine. The railroad removed the cab from the second locomotive and relayed the engine controls to the first one.

8:22 your partly right... ABS makes you stop sooner cuz if you lock you tires up you lose the traction from your tires, ABS keeps the traction there making you stop sooner and ABS allows you to turn slightly when "sliding".... I know alot about automotive, ABS is nice to have my current truck doesn't have it and can be interesting in the winter lol

Doesn't it only make you stop sooner compared to losing traction though? If you have full traction and are breaking without ABS, you're not losing each individual pulse of breaking power

​@@zaneweaver4185 you will never be able to outbrake ABS your wheels on asphalt reaches peak traction when they're slipping just a little, ABS pulses hundreds of times each second to maintain that, while peak absolute best human reaction-time is at world record best 1/10th of a second. ABS can register and pulse your brakes at least 10 times, before you've reacted to a a light being turned on let alone reacting to your brakes locking up which has a reaction time much slower than that. This is without talking about the fact that each milimeter of road has verly slightly different traction, your car moves around as you adjust your brakes to try and account for that changing the tyre grip even more. And the final nail in the coffin is that ABS can adjust each tyre individually, while you can only adjust total brake pressure.

In all honesty, ABS is only really only about maintaining some control in slick situations. If you have ABS in slick conditions, it could double or even triple your stopping distance which has been proven. ABS would only shorten your stopping distance if you were to slam the brakes on dry pavement where otherwise you would lock the wheels and slide.

That's not totally correct. ABS is much more of a steering assist in emergency situations than it is a braking assist - if you take a car without ABS and try to swerve while under braking in slick conditions, you just go straight on (and, presumably, hit whatever you're trying to swerve to avoid). The pulsing of the brakes allows the front tyres to grip enough to turn the car, allowing you to avoid whatever is in front of you.

Hey Kan, jake breaks are not backfed exhaust. Think of it as turning your piston into a compressor, open the valve early after ignition to let the exhaust out rather than getting a power stroke. There are usually 3 positions. you can have it using 2, 4 or all 6 cylinders. idk how a V8 motor does it, but they could also use an exhaust break, which is cheaper to install and maintain, but does not provide quite as much stopping power. They are also much quieter than a jake break. In that case, it's a butterfly valve that restricts the flow of your exhaust to create backpressure.

No ,the abs also is better in braking than locking the tires. Because your wheel and the ground has 0 relative velocity so there is static friction and static friction is more than kinetic friction so your car actually stops better using ABS and releasing the brakes.

Keep it going Kan. My 1st car was a 98' VW Beetle put fog lamps on it & had a metal stool under it to keep it from rolling on me... I forgot about the stool when I started up my car.. The metal legs went right through the radiator. 🤯

For the conversation around 14:00. Most 6 speed manuals have the reverse next to the first gear. 5 speed manuals usually have the reverse at the location of the 6th gear. It is something that is probably depended on manufacturer.

The whole thing of "it broke, Mae it bigger" is why my 1931 Packard weighs 5,500 lbs, while the most common car of the era, a Ford Model A, weighs 2,300. They didn't know how much frame it would take to support it's big engine and long wheelbase, so they just made it thicker. It worked though, heh.

The engine brake of a truck operates by, essentially, not spraying in fuel and immediately popping the exhaust valve open after the compression stroke. This robs a ton of power from the engine since diesels have such a high compression ratio and turn them into a massive air compress. This is also why they sound so loud when using them, because they are just burping out 6, 2.5L cylinders of 30psi air compressed down to 16:1 at 1500rpm. That's why they are so loud, and how they work.

As someone who owns a 23 year old astro van, I can confirm if I ever have to use my emergency brake I will probably have to break my leg off to use it, or break my leg because I used it. It is in the dumbest spot.

Hayo, i posted this in hyce’s commemts. But its meant for u. In case anyone wamts the SUPER easy explination on “jake brakes” The easiest way to explain it, isnt so much “backpressure”. Its more so the engine allowing the air to escape RIGHT before the combustion point, essentially turning the piston into a massive air cushion. The loud rapid pops u hear are the the air releasing at a RAPID rate from each piston. Instead of a bunch of combustion pops

Haven't done anything bad in a car yet... Mowers on the other hand. Ran over too many rocks with my dad's gas mower in highschool, and sheared the pins holding the blade to the shaft. About 2 weeks later when he got the new parts, we had a lot of trouble getting it started. Once I got it running it lasted about 11 seconds before the pins sheared clean off again on their own. That was when my dad first noticed that Sears had started using their website like Amazon (as a lot of stores do now in general) and the poor quality knockoff part he apparently ordered from them wasn't actually sold by them, and decided never to use them again. I had to suffer a push mower for 5+ years before buying an electric mower myself just so I was willing to deal with the lawn more than once a summer. As for crawling into a 200°F boiler, I can't quite relate, but I have had to climb into the hull of a historic tugboat in 90+ weather to haul 6 tons worth of iron ingots and concrete blocks out used for ballast so that it was light enough for the crane that was available to lift, just to move it ~50ft across the pier it was sitting out of the water on.

my grandfather once stole the steam engine from my great grandfather one night with some of his friends and drove it straight through the closed engine shed doors, luckily he escaped unnoticed and was never caught lol. My great grandfather was not very amused the next morning, when he found the steam engine in front off the shed and the doors missing...

Once speed limits get fully removed, you could make some downhill only return lines at 25% or something ridiculous so that you can save time going straight down the hills instead of following the curves you need to make it up. That'd definitely have to wait till the cars stop yeeting themselves though.

we made a similar run because of you and hyce videos but we did a 7 percent and we barely made it with 8 cars of rails with a climax(Genie) a class 48{The Duck) and 2-8-0 cooke (Chef), lots of fun haha love the series guys

my automotive teacher talked about a customer who bought in a quote "new car" *with 60 Ks on it, this is a really nice car too they got from the dealership* and after like 2 Ks they got a check engine light and so they instantly went to the mechanics shop, got it checked and what do you know, the oil was sludge... literally goop for a 5 min DIY slime craft, it blocked the oil filter and no oil was feeding to the pistons, this car "new" with 60 Ks never had a single service in its entire life and almost required a huge job done on it, that's a lesson to get any "new" cars you get to get instantly serviced just in case because they're not obligated to be serviced before being sold

Actually a jake brake works by opening the exhaust valve early to realease the compression pressure before ignition occures thus slowing the engjne down as the energy used to compress the air in the cylinder is not replaced by ignition of fuel, the loud poping noise is caused by the rapid release if pressure each time the valve opens

I actually prefer the push down the gear stick reverse lockout, compared to my car for example, with the pull up collar. It's way faster to put it in reverse

Honestly i miss my pull up collar reverse gear. My 1st car (pontiac sunfire) had one. But my second and 3rd (ford focus and nissan altima) dont even have the push down thingy. They are both 5speed and just have reverse in “6the gear position) I feel a lockout should be there for if i ever loan my car to someone..

@@allanweede2599 Oh yeah, my mums Toyota Auris is a 5 speed with no reverse lockout, and I put it into "6th" once because I was used to driving my dads 6 speed car, and well, it grinded a bit, but I did not let the clutch up luckily

Backfeeding exhoust is the european counterpart of the us jake brake. In the eu we close a valve in the exhoust and that increases pressure in the cilinder on the exhaust stroke which slows down the engine and thus the truck. A jake brake opens the exhaust valve at the end of the compression stroke, releasing all the pressure and making a bunch of noice (also feeding the turbo which in turn increases braking eficciency). This way there is no pressure in the cilinder pushing the piston back down after the compression stroke. So the eninge needs to work to conpress the air and then looses this energy by opening the exhaust valves early thus braking the engine.

re: sand on the rails, there's photos of some mainlines through the Appalachians where sanding was so heavy, the rails stayed entirely white.

When you talk about running steam locos at 59:40 or so, there is (AFAIK) also a coal mine in China (Sandoaling) running steam locos, they were apparently decomissioned in 2022. China's last steam locomotive was finished in 1999, which is certainly some fun trivia.

Bro, door stories I got this! I was a garbage man for years. One day I was told to drive a truck out of the shop for the 1000th time. Well bosses kid opened the door 3/4 of the way so I couldn't see it behind the drop visor. I drove the garbage truck right through a 11ft wide 13ft tall shop roll up door. About a $3k repair.

I know nobody will read this but that's a terrible description of ABS, it doesn't just release the brakes, it keeps the right amount of pressure on them to slow down as fast as possible without locking up the wheels, and it actually makes the car stop way faster because tires that are just sliding have very little grip

Soo just as a possible idea for the future. When you have "boring" grindy things to do in game that could possibly be a good time for a short, super community focused live stream if you are still interested in possibly streaming more. Could even invite some friends to join or just hang out for some added commentary. It's carefree easy content that you don't have to worry about editing. Unless of course something video or KZfaq short worthy happens then there's even more free content that you never would've had otherwise.

Hyce over here gets a 2004 Volkswagen Golf lemon as his first vehicle, kAn over here gets some Chevy van, and I'm stuck over here with a 2013 Ford Escape. I finally got my driver's license in August of 2022 and I had a very fun experience during December where was the day after a massive snowstorm they had. The snow off the road but there was still black ice I was about half of the way to school, and the route I have to take is like 12.5 miles, when I hit a random piece of black ice and my first thought was slam on the brakes the car did not like that and it started serpentining and the brake pedal started kicking back at me so I took my foot off the break and let it slow itself down until I could control it and then I drove the rest of the way to school going about 20 to 30

When building and measuring track, the low rail is always used as the grade and profile rail, while the high rail is used to measure alignment.

My first car was a 1984 Ford EXP (Escort) and reverse was next to first on it, but it didn't have the push down lock out for reverse. I'll say that having that is a very good option to have.

Modern diesel electrics have either lead axle only or all axle sand. Generally, the lead unit has the least adhesion. Modern units also show you trailing unit tractive effort. I have seen 144,000lbs on the lead, trailing 160,000-180,000 on the second unit and the DP was about the same as the second at 160,000. With sand the lead unit usually comes up to nearly 160,000lbs. They are capable of more but most units we get on run-throughs limit tractive effort to 160,000.

Used to drive hired 9-seat vans for my uni's photography club (think short wheelbase Transits, but instead the VW Transporter or Mercedes Vito equivalent) since the UK driving licences let you drive up to 9-person vehicles without other licences. They're just big, slow cars (though the Merc vans with the 7-speed auto and flappy paddles on the steering wheel would sit very happily at 120, or uh so I hear). Worst thing about the manual VWs on the country roads we frequented was the horrific 5-speed they had. First was super short (makes sense, in cargo variants they can do a tonne or two of cargo), but 2nd-5th were incredibly long, which I assume is to improve fuel economy. You'd come up to a steep hill at whatever speed, and basically have to mash the accelerator and change down once you got to 2k revs to have any chance of making it up, the engine being anemic and the gears so long. And because 1st was so short, the 1st gear lockout stopped you changing down if you were going much faster than 10mph, and by that point you've lost basically all your momentum. At that point, all you could do was hope you didn't grind to a halt on a blind curve so you could stop, put it in first, and thank your lucky stars that you weren't the one paying for the inevitable clutch replacement the thing would need after a year or two of trying to go up hills, because hill starting it involved almost burying your right foot and feathering the clutch to keep the revs up.

What jake brake essentially does is, you imagine a syringe. You shut the syringe tube, compress it so hard till you cant go anymore and suddenly release it. That's what it does. When the cylinder is in compression stroke and top dead center, in usual situation it would inject fuel so combustion happens. But in this case, it compresses and open the exhaust valve immediately when the piston is on position.

At 14:00 u should see how you put a 2019 bmw 1 series in reverse it feels like the shifter is gonna break because theres no button its just harder to enter reverse

30:59 there was infact not a tree, Betsy I guess just wobbled a bit too much on that turn. My best guess is that even with Betsy on full the link between her and the 48 was slack, so she got pushed off by the weight of the Goat and the Glenbrook as well as the train

So about the pushing down, to get into Revers, it is really commen here in Germany, cause it prevents for shifting by mistake into revers and screw the gear box.

I wrote my first car off by drifting over a tank track. A literal tank track. There's an old Churchill or something on an airfield where we were messing about and they used the tracks as a sort of boundary for the main entranceway, which you know, I was busy sliding sideways across. Anyway, one of the locating teeth hit my subframe, bounced the front end 2-3ft up into the air and jammed the gearbox in 2nd gear. Le sigh. That was a long night waiting for a tow truck.

I thought that the firewood depots could take any form of wood, even logs & lumber. Does cordwood give the most pieces of firewood in a single load? EDIT: Also, Kan, do you still have the sheared driveshaft? And if so care to post a pic next episode?

I've only tried with logs. It swallows the logs allright but doesn't output any more firewood.

@@kimkimpa5150 interesting. I guess cordwood is the right answer then; sure it takes longer to load, but then you need to take fewer trips if you want to fill the depot up quickly. Wait, can you bring firewood with you when you fast travel to a telegraph office, and can you throw it back onto another firewood depot? It sounds absolutely broken, but you could just carry firewood from a central firewood depot and fast travel to another one to fill it up but by bit (and ruin the spirit of the game! 😅)

Put trains back to back, one reversing the other right way forward, so the cabins are connected. Then you can easily drive 2 without the danger of falling off

A fireman on one of the Union Pacific Big Boys opened the firebox door at the wrong time once and had the shovel sucked out of his hands and would’ve been sucked in himself if the engineer hadn’t shoved his leg across the opening and caught the fireman across his chest with it. They both lost hair in the process and singed their clothes, but both were okay and had to explain the lump of melted metal the Cheyenne roundhouse crews had to separate from the bottom of the ash pan a week later. Another time a Big Boy ran out of coal while running up Sherman Hill on the then new Harriman Line and stalled out since no one really knew the new line yet all that well, and they were nearly out of water since they were also overloaded due to errors by the Cheyenne yard master, and to reverse push the train into the hole at a passing location to get to the water tank the engineer, fireman, and conductor picked up a bunch of new ties that MoW had been stacking up for a future project and shoved those into the firebox from the cab. It took a while, but the ties made just enough heat to make just enough pressure to get them off the single track main for the next train to pass and not hit them… and take word to Laramie for help.

Another thing you could have done instead of hitting the shed was simply put the van in neutral even if the surface is flat the van wouldn’t be able to put power to the wheels
