Using a CZUR scanner for Comics, Stamps, and Coins

CZUR Book Scanners are a fantastic choice for scanning books, converting text to PDFs, creating searchable PDFs from printed materials - but are they good for scanning your collectables? Comics, Stamps, and Coins?
In this video, I use a CZUR scanner to scan these collectibles. Then, I compare the results and even show scans done with a high-end flatbed scanner.

Thanks so much for this video! I'm wondering if elevating the smaller items and bringing them closer to the camera, like coins and stamps, would increase the clarity. Have you tried this?

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I was looking to get something like a CZUR or a Fujitsu/Ricoh SV600 for the purpose of scanning comic books. Just the exterior covers - front and back, for the most part. One of the issues I've always seen with overhead scanners like CZUR and the SV600 are, they can take great scans of things like slabbed (graded) comic books, but there is always a glare on the edges of the slab that is really strong with both models. I always found that annoying. I may end up going with a flatbed simply because of that. For unslabbed/ungraded comics, they seem to do great, though.

A trick is to not use the overhead light - it will seem like it’s too dark, but the scans come out great. That said - for super high-end books, the flatbeds have really good resolution. I have an absolute beast of an HP Scanner. Sadly, I don’t have a collection of super high-end slabs - haha!😂

lol. Lots of those slabbed books aren't really expensive. People will slab anything based upon price speculation - they're not necessarily rare nor expensive. Thanks for the tip on using the scanner. I may have missed it in the video, but which flatbed scanner were you using?

@@CosmicTrekker mine is quite old - an HP 8800 I think (I’m not at home). I used it for some GA slabs (Disney books). I always think “big” books when I think slabs, but you are 100% correct - I’ve seen a $20 book in a $40 slab! Haha

Thank you for the video, this helped me understand. I am about to order a CZUR Shine 500 Pro off eBay for around $40. My thing is creating a digital copy of all my books, as well as my archie digests. Would this work well (the Shine 500 Pro) for the digests? What about finger removal from the scan if I don't have the finger cot?

I haven’t scanned my Archie digests - but that’s a very interesting idea! I’m going to try that - because it would be great to be able to zoom in on them and read them. Sometimes I find them a bit too small to read well! Thanks for the great idea

Oh / for the finger removal, I haven’t tried it without the finger cots. You can buy those though. Also, I’ve never used the 500 Pro. It’s not one that I’m family with.

@@LearningandTechnology Ive been working on creating the "Archie Preservation Project", which seeks to archive every archie comic that ACP that ever released. Im roughly halfway done, now comes the hard part of finding and buying copies that aren't online lol. Didn't know you also like Archie digests, so that's great to learn! For me, my goal is to have a digital copy of all the books and comics I have (roughly 1,100 digests with about half already having digital copies) which can fit on a colour e-reader. Something about being able to carry it all with you alleviates my stress about travel. Thank you for the reply, and sorry about the long winded message. I went with the 800 Pro instead since it was only $4 more on eBay.

@@BonafideMcdonalds That’s an awesome project! I have the CDs that they released a few years ago for B&V, Jughead, and Archie (Bronze-Age). They all had digital copies of those titles for a 10-year period. I actually have quite a bit of Archie comics - and actually quite a bit of original art as well :) I’ll be interested to see how the 800 works for you - and updates on your project!
