Using a (Free ) Hügelkultur Approach to Fill Our Deep Raised Beds

Our perennial beds are 3 feet deep and needed 820 cubic feet of material to fill them--this is how we managed to fill them for free, using an adapted hügelkultur method. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for this! I’m building raised bed and we have free compost in my town, I didn’t know if it was okay to use to fill up part of the beds.

Ours has worked out really well! Do keep an eye out for things in the mix as you go to collect it-since it comes from bags of material that people leave at the curb, ours had small bits of trash here and there. The ones we had weren’t any kind of contamination issue, but it’s worth keeping a close eye.

Our small town sells their composted leaves so they are mot available for free

We did this with annual beds. We had significant sinking as expected which is why we went with annuals. I think if the perennials could tollerate the mounding it would be a great way to both fill beds on the cheap and propagate as a bonus.

I’m definitely going to try layering the blackberries!
