When I worked for the gas company back in 1972 I used a hand held 90 pound jackhammer to drive a 3/4 inch gas pipe under a 20 foot street. Drive a 10 foot pipe first then weld another 10 foot pipe onto it and that's as high tech it was with steel pipe . Then they came out with some kind of pink plastic pipe(Aldyl-A). Use to run 4 inch main with a cat and a roll of pipe attached to a tooth that dug into the ground. The 3/4 inch plastic was heat welded together that went to the residential homes. They recently found the pink plastic has had failures and they have to replace all the pipe that was laid. I think they use polyethylene now.
