In this video I talk about my experiences with the Leica M240 and talk about whether its still relevant in 2022. Should you still get one of these if you are looking at joining the Leica digital experience? Or should you opt for an M10 or M11?

Nathan, may I say one of the best things about the m240 is seeing that you have got one back in your hands and making content again after events earlier this year. I hope you are enjoying it!

For my job, I use an M240 and an M-P240. They are great tools for a press photographer, and they are faster to handle than the M10 or M11. I see no reason to switch to M10 or M11. Keep on rolling!

Curious why you say the M240 is faster handling than the M10 or M11? Not that I doubt you just curious. I own none of the cameras you mention, nor do I have any hands on experience with any of them, mine is an M Type 262.

@@d30gaijin If you want to go from single shot to continue on the M10 and M11, you need to go into the menu. On the M240, you just push the on/off selector to the next position, and you're ready. Battery life is longer than on the M 10. On the M240 you've five keys for setting etc. On the M10 and M11, you've to fiddle into the menu to find the same settings.

I sold my M8 and M9 on eBay after I snagged a hardly used MP-240. It is an incredible camera and it doesn't sound like I'm kicking over a dirt bike every time I press the shutter. The best part is I got the EVF and I can use my Leica R zoom lenses on it.

... and there we go: a few weeks ago I decided to buy a reasonably priced M240 and can say that I am so positively surprised by this camera and its‘ outcomes! Didn’t regret up to now and more or less even wondering why I didn’t buy one before. High iso? Coming from film my favorite ISO are 64/ 125/320/640 this always was and is enough also with my Nikons - here I shoot with M2, M6 or M4-P and diverse Nikons, film and digital. Rarely I use 3200 and happy with the results as well. If you can get a M240… it’s a no brainer I dare to say. But as always: I shoot like Leica film or digital with native lenses mostly. Tried Voigtlaender, even own a 35 1.4 of this brand, but it doesn't convince me by its' performance. But that’s one’s own decision. Always good light!

I currently shoot on a Leica SL Type 601 with a combination of M and L mount lenses. Increasingly I’m enjoying M Lenses more and I’m thinking of ditching my 2nd camera, a Fuji-film X100V for an M body. So I’ve been reading extensively as one does as the nearest Leica store is a 5 hour round trip. It seems to me that the M10 offers little real benefit and the M10R vignettes more with wide lenses according to Jonathan Slack which would annoy me as my favourite lenses include my Ultron 21mm F1.8. So I’ve been agonising over whether to go all in with the more flexible but expensive M11 or just enjoy a M240 for what it is. Your video shows beyond doubt the M240 can produce great shots so thanks for putting your great images out there.

The Leica M240 in a closer look is by far the better of the digital M bodies. When launched back in 2012, Leica pulled all the stops and loaded the M240 with features the M10 and M11 have omitted, Film mode is gone, if you shoot black and white the M240 film mode had presets for contrast filters

I do paid shoots with an mp240 and an m240. And I came from gfx and fuji x system. They have greater IQ but I enjoy taking photos more on the M system. And the m240 gen is more than good enough for me as a photographer. If you can't take good photos with it, the problem is with the photographer. Not the gears

I got my hands on the M11 at the Leica Store Porto recently and I really liked it, after shooting the M240 for almost a decade now. I no longer shoot professionally, so I couldn't justify putting the credit card down right that second and picking one up. When I got back to the hotel, I looked at the files and 60MP is nice and all, but I really don't need it. But it did leave me with wanting a second Leica body, so now I'm thinking I'm going to pick up the M246 mono.

Hello Nathan. I found your video whilst considering digital M bodies. Having a M3 and a 50mm Summicron has been wonderful experience recently. Leica digital options seem many and the M10 seemed something worthwhile. Thank you for sharing your experience with this model and showcasing your wonderful varied images. Realistically speaking purchasing a M240 or 262 in 2022 wouldn’t be foolhardy ? Am concerned about possible repairs being needed down the line compared to buying a M10 or newer model.

Buy one that has been cared for, these cameras are built like tanks and don’t suffer with sensor corrosion like the M9 did so you should be fine, yes you may need the odd viewfinder calibration if knocked but that’s it.

@@nathan_woodgate hello Nathan. Much has changed since a year ago when I asked you this. I bought a black M-A and a black MP; both purchased new. I embarked on B&W film and good results spurred me on to continue till now. Many of my images have won some awards etc. My home development is comparable to most international film labs and even better than some of them. I now look forward to purchasing the M11 monochrom. I use a GRiii and GRiiix for colour which is about < 5% of photography I do.

Loved the M240 when I had it but sold it to buy an M10 when the latter was released. Whilst it is great to comfortably use ISO 6400, the battery life is relatively poor compared with M240 and I missed the option of red frame lines. The thinner body and higher viewfinder magnification were okay, but not as big a deal as Leica made them out to be. With every new M, the only major upgrade has been the sensor, but in good lighting, I cannot tell any real quality differences between photos I took on my M9, M240 or M10. In hindsight, especially with the pandemic restricting travel in the last 2 years, I probably should’ve skipped the M10 and waited for the M11! Anyway, enjoy the M240!

So what do you think of the usability of the m240 in the night time? Say indoor dinner or home environment?
@vickey59
@vickey59 2 жыл бұрын
@@turn-me-later compared to more modern sensors, it definitely has its limitations. The biggest issue isn’t the noise, but the horizontal and vertical banding, which appears most of the time at 6400 or when recovering too much of the shadows. That being said, you can fix banding to a large extent with Nik Dfine. I was fine with using ISO6400 for family photos, like dinner with dim lighting or at home indoors, as long as you know you can’t blow up the photos to commercial quality. The colours may be a bit weirder and need correcting, and it won’t be as sharp, but it’s fine if you’re not pixel peeping family photos. I used the M240 for many years, using Summicrons only, and never really felt like I couldn’t take it out to dinner because of its low light limitations.

@@vickey59 So do you think 3200 is a good goal as a max iso to avoid these issues or lower like 800 or 1600?
@vickey59
@vickey59 Жыл бұрын
@@ezrashanti it depends on why you’re using ISO 3200 and what the scene looks like. I shot a lot of wildlife in Galápagos Islands using adapted R lenses, and since there is no stabilisation, I had to increase the shutter speed and use ISO 3200. Most photos were taken before sunset with decent light and they all turned out fine and sharp, without banding. But if you are using ISO 3200 at night in high contrast scenes (light source in center or on a subject, with lots of dark shadows around it), the banding can be quite visible in the shadows. The banding becomes worse if you try to recover the shadows. If it’s just dim and not high contrast with lots of dark shadows, I think ISO 3200 is still very usable.

Amazing Video and shots, Am new to Leica so I just bought M240 3 days ago. I have noticed that you used f11 on all your shots with the tt lens, and f4 with the leica, Any particular reason for that. And any advice for me as a newcomer and photographer. Love your shots a lot especially with tt lens. Last question , were those raw none-edited or jpeg straight from the cam. My regards!

With the 28mm lens I was zone focusing so f11 helps with getting everything in focus. With the Leica lens I was manually focusing so the f4 aperture means I can use a higher shutter speed with a low ISO.

As all electronic devices, there's a very high possibility the M240 breaks and no repair from Leica (after 10 years). I would be happy to add a M240 to my M10-P as a backup camera but that's a high risk for a job... A M10 would be more secure.
