Using a Rotary Knife with Leather

Lots of folks ask about using rotary knives with leathercraft. Though it's not always the best tool for the job, it definitely is a great tool for many tasks and many types of leathers.

I use a 60mm rotary cutter for thick leather, especially with a new disk. Slices through quite fine.

I use my rotary cutter wherever I can, even on thick leather. As with any knife, you have to use a new or very sharp blade and it will go through it like butter. It can be used effectively on chrome tan if you do as Aaron does, roll it back and forth. The only drawback is that quality replacement blades are expensive. Thanks for the video!

I like them for thin leathers because they don’t stretch the leather like dragging a knife does. The action of the rotary blade pushes down instead. For outside corners they are great. But for inside corners, i usually have to switch to a scalpel or head knife.

I love my rotary cutter long cuts on projects, and to break down sides of leather into workable sizes. But got finer cuts it can be a little fickle.

Hey Aaron, thanks for the video. Please forgive my ignorance but why do you not recommend a rotary cutter on 5/6 oz veg tan?

For straight lines it's fine, but curves will prove to be more difficult on the more firm leather.

It will work, it's just not the best tool for the job in my opinion.

It's a handle for carrying glass. I got it at Harbor Freight.
