Just bought my first Leica (a IIIF), and watched this video a few times. Nice job. I feel much more confident now...

Really interesting and detailed video: thanks for making the effort! Quite a few differences in operation, compared to later M Leicas. While the mechanics are beautiful, I think I'll stick with the simpler operation of an M6. Easier to work with.

Very thoughtful review thanks. Especially helpful in light of not having an original manual for a camera that is > 65 years old. I like the simplicity and compactness of this older camera especially with 50mm/f3.5. Best, Enzo

very helpful tutorial, I am searching to buy a IIIG if I can get one in good condition, I always liked these classic vintage cameras. Thanks for the video

I am a veteran Barnack Leica user, so none of this was new, but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this video. Thank you! Perhaps you could do a short video describing the fairly complex flash sync system? Andy in New England.
@northstar19503 жыл бұрын
To be honest I have never used flash on any of my Leicas but I did touch a bit of it on the blog featuring the IIIf Andrew.

@@northstar1950 I haven't either. But I want to soak up as much knowledge as I can to pass on to the younger generation. At least one of my kids is interested in my collection of kit, and our generation's memories are irreplaceable. KZfaq videos are today's oral learning. Thanks so much for passing your knowledge along! Andy

Thoroughly enjoyed your video! I own several Zorki + Feds including a Zorki 3. I've often considered purchasing a Leica screw Barnack but prices seem a little out of my reach. I may consider selling most of my camera collection + investing in a screw Leica such as you own. A most informative video!!! Would love to know a little more about the choice of Leica lenses you own + their properties. Many thanks Derek

Derek, thanks for your kind comments. Most of my collection have the Elmar f3,5 5cm lens, this has been in production almost from the very start of leica production and is a much liked and competent lens Later replaced by the f2.8 version Personally I like the slightly faster Summar and of course the later Summitar for it's interesting' Swirley Bokeh.' I don't really have a huge collection of Leitz glass and the only other non 5cm lens I have is a 9cm f4 Elmar.

Thanks for this! Really informative - I had one of these passed down to me recently but I couldn't figure out how to load it after a couple spoilt rolls but hopefully this will do the job!

I'm pleased to hear that, there are quite a few uploads different people have put on KZfaq about loading screw thread Leicas, might be worth looking at a few more.Thanks for your kind comment.

The only thing that you skipped was the depth of field markings on the lens barrel and their relation to the aperture settings.

Hi, I always assume people who are interested enough to watch my humble efforts would know about these matters.

Very insightful video, thank you. A question; when looking through the viewfinder, does the field of view adjust to the mounted lens?
@northstar19503 жыл бұрын
Hi Chilli , the simple answer is no, but you can, at some expense, buy individual viewfinders designed for specific lenses or you can buy a device that had a turret that revolves which I think have four small lenses covering most focal lengths. I don't own any of these. The above have a base that slides into the cold shoe that would hold a flash gun normally. Only the later 'M' series had frame lines that alter depending on the lenses focal length.

@@northstar1950 oh ok thanks. So what’s the standard focal view through the iiic viewfinder? 35 or 50?
@northstar19503 жыл бұрын
@@chillimoroka7744, the standard lenses are all marked 5cm or if you like 50mm. These include in order of introduction Elmar, Summar, Summitar and Summicron. Some Elmars are 35..

@@northstar1950 I understand that, however my question is related to the camera’s viewfinder, what field of view do I see when looking through it?
@Lavi-Aemilia-Astori4 жыл бұрын
I am considering getting a leica iic, i have quite a few of questions How does the old ltm lens work with colour film? Is the slow speed necessary? How does it compare to more modern film slr(e.g nikon F2, canon A1, contax rts) Is it really worth it buying a leica thread mount? How durable is it? Can it stay with you for a lifetime? Sorry for all the questions, sorry for wasting your time.
@northstar19503 жыл бұрын
Hi Das Hinata, please accept my apologies as I have only just seen your question. The older non- coated lenses will flare if used into the sun so the later coated post war lenses might be better for colour work. The slow sppeds arn't essential and only the Leicas III types had the slow speeds. These are range finder cameras and so cant really be directly compared to moderner SLR camera. Leicas like these have a rangefinder system to aid focusing and composition is via a viewfinder with a window on the body. A good one will last a lifetime and if it does need repairs or servicing there are specialists who can do this. I hope this helps.Good luck.

northstar1950 nothing to be sorry about, great explanation, thanks you!
@sharonleibel4 жыл бұрын
Just found your channel. Brilliant explanations and very informative. I have a few Ms and I am very interested in a Leica III. Can you give an explanation on how do you choose them, What are the pitfalls and highlights of the selection - Given their age?
@northstar19504 жыл бұрын
Well it's a good question. Maybe I will do an upload about what I look for or at least ask questions about if buying online. I don't think age is a big factor its all to do with if and when the camera has had a service and where it's been stored. But to try to answer your question remove lens if it has one and shine a torch through it see if there is any serious haze or fungus.Check the shutter blinds for damage.Assuming there is a lens with it put it back on and check to see how clear the rangefinder is and the viewfinder. Listen to the shutter and make sure it's not sticking try the slow speeds if fitted and if they are sticky be prepared to spend some money on a CLA. Hope that helps a bit. Thanks for your kind comments too.
@sharonleibel4 жыл бұрын
northstar1950 thanks! The issue is usually with slow shutter speeds, not high ones?
@northstar19504 жыл бұрын
@@sharonleibel , sorry for my late response, it's both! I believe curtain lag is more likely to be seem at the higher 500th- 1000th speeds.

Very informativ and important video for Leica or klone users. However, when demonstrating an object, please hold it still, don´t vawe it around!! There might be details that the viewer want´s to see but when you keep on taking in and out of picture and focus it becomes irritating.
