If you caulk around the bottom it will trap water ruining the floor if / when the seal fails. If you leave it open the seal failure will be obvious. I’ve fixed a couple of caulked bases. I had to replace the floor in one of them.

The toilet outlet was 2" in diameter. The replacement flange was 2 5/8". Everything that made it through the toilet will go through the flange. The flange and the trap way outlet are very close together once the toilet is installed, it's not like he is reducing the diameter of the drain at the bend or anywhere along the drain line.

@hvacmisadventures6448 I'm a 10 year journeyman. Don't ever use silicone in between a flange , the silicone doesnt seal /stick well to pvc . . . If you every have to raise a flange if it's cast iron you drop in a cast iron to pvc flange that has the 4 Allen keys or use a cast iron flange that bolts around the hub after knocking the flange off. If it's pvc you glue a 3inch flange inside the if it's a hub you can wipe glue around the pipe and flange light it with a lighter and then just pry it right on off once it gets soft. I never ever trust those flange extenders. Once re plumbs first wax seal goes under the flange extension it'll leak in the ceiling below and you will have trouble determining where it's coming from.

I like to caulk them if they’re on tile or solid floor. If they’re set on laminate, vinyl, or wood flooring I don’t caulk them. I find a thick caulking helps the toilet sit better over time, make the ring last longer without leaking due to less lateral movement, and helps keep the restroom more sanitary. On the flooring types I said above I don’t caulk because water can get under the flooring without the homeowner or customer knowing until it’s caused damage.

Yep. Everyone says caulking the toilet to the floor is the best thing since rolled toilet paper, but I'd much rather have as much obvious indication of a problem as soon as the wax ring leaks. Pulling up linoleum and cutting out a huge section of subfloor (sometimes under a wall) is a lot worse than the home owner noticing a leak and calling to have it repaired right away.

The toilet outlet and insert being smaller than the closet bend is a great thing. Things I find in toilets that you don't want getting past the toilet: Pens, wall mounted door knob stop with fastener and drywall anchor, Spider brand anti theft device, a hotel entry key card(same size as a credit card), matchbox car, various other toys, a whole syringe from a heroine addict. And all those are examples of why you try to pull things out of toilets when you are using a plunger or toilet auger. If the clog is only paper, you'll usually break it up on the first go, and it'll all go down on the next flush. Things that made it past drains and caused or almost caused a floor, walls, or cieling to be torn up to access pipes: lid to one gallon jug, rag, Salonpas pain patch(they are tough cloth), tree roots, including roots that actually entered into a flange mounting hole from under a slab.

I’m a pro plumber, in a a high end bathroom i would recommend to never caulk the toilet as you can always see the caulking and after years of cleaning a bathroom floor with different chemicals the caulking never holds up discolouration occurs no matter the caulk . The clean look of a proper set toilet even shadow line looks the cleanest, however in a rental situation or low income housing / apartment building or commercials I always caulk the toilet . In my opinion looks way better without caulk and was designed not to be caulked . Just my opinion

Exactly if you caulk the toilet it's showed your job is shitty because your trying to hide a potential leak from the drainage piping

Why not turn the flange upside down before installing so you can mark out the floor and cut it easily?

I don't like caulking the bottom of toilets either. If it ever leaks your more likely to catch it before it leaks thru your ceiling! But it's my opinion

I've never used those flange kits before... husband does flooring & we deal with flanges too low sometimes. But uhh - why wax under the flange kit AND over? I've seen wax end up dried out and causing leaks after a (long) time.

Newbie here. How do you know if it’s not set right? I did mine today. It’s level. Doesn’t leak (no signs on bath floor or kitchen below lol) and it took my … issue with no probs. So what’s a sign it needs resetting?

Do you leave the filter in your vac when you use it to suck up water? Or do you take it out

Why are you against nor caulking the toilet to the floor? I'm exact opposite. Just wondering.

You can find out when the toilet is leaking sooner then caulking it.

You can caulk the front and leave the back open. If you don't caulk water/piss will drip down the outside and follow the curve under the toilet.

Whats the lifespan of those wax rings on the bottom usually? How often do you just replace the rings age of the toilet? Plus the size of some of you yanks, wouldnt think 2 inch outlet on a shotta would ve big enough haha
