I may sound like a fanboy but I don't care, without Dave I would have never rediscovered my love for the outdoors and its importance

Johnny Bushman is there a reason why you didn’t lay that belt on a flat surface to hone your blade? ($3 butcher knife? That’s awesome) I’ve been out3 times now looking for a non folding knife haven’t found anything I like yet. Had to start over as all my knives were stolen. Just have a basic Ferber I always carry (just nek-d without it) and a folding kershaw. Thanks, I like your teaching style. Simple and direct.

Thanks for the info Dave. I'm an amateur knife maker and I've struggled a bit with getting the razor sharp edge on my finished products. I've used a belt type strap in the past and got mixed results depending on the type of knife I was doing at the time. I just placed an order to Amazon to get a board strop and some compound. Looking forward to trying this technique. Thanks again!

Great video, Dave. I had no idea what sharp was, even after buying quality sharpening gear, til I picked up a strop and worked on my honing technique. I'm using a JRE Industries Strop bat with 4 sides, 3 of them loaded with different compounds and one with just bare leather. I also finish it off with either Ballistol (the version sold via pump spray, not the aerosol version) if I don't use it for food prep, but if I do use it for food (i.e. for my kitchen knives) I use mineral oil. It was a pleasure meeting you at Blade - take care and hope to see you next year!

I have several compounds that I am using. A Green clay type based compound that came with a couple strops I use and more a solid light granular compound I get from Casstrom website.

That’s an interesting question... I am a leather worker and a knife collector... I have used many many different mediums on strops..... never have I thought about BS. I cant think of any reason why it wouldn’t be ok.... I think over time it may damage the leather and or may be a little too abrasive on the blade but I could be wrong.

Seems like an awful lot of pressure being applied to the strop here. I've always heard that a lighter touch is better when it comes to stropping. With the leather being as supple as it is (compared to a whetstone, anyway) you risk rounding the edge of your blade off slightly. Perhaps the effect isn't that pronounced as they make it sound, though? Heck, it may even be preferable for field knives such as these, as opposed to, say, a kitchen knife. It would certainly lend to better edge retention, if not as razor sharp...

Certainly passing all the tests (fingernail, arm hair.) Perhaps I'll ignore what "they" say for a while, and try adding a bit more pressure to my own stropping and see what happens. You know how it goes on the forums, I'm sure. If it's not 100% optimal, and min/maxed to the point of absurdity, it's "wrong" ... even when "wrong" is still 95% of perfect. Thanks for the reply!
