An early effort at creating educational instruction videos. This is a short instruction set for using a "triple beam balance" to measure mass. I made it for use by elementary/middle school teachers I work with, but i have used it in my own university class for pre-service teachers. If people find it useful, I will try to post more instructional videos (and presumably get better at it).

Thank you! I have big test today in science and we have to use a balance, yet our group leader never let anyone touch the balance. So thank you for explaining it so well!

I have to teach my 7 th graders how to use the T.B. Balance, i can obviously relax and allow kids to watch you!!!!!!!! (while manipulating balance) Thanks.

I am about to make a rubber mold of a sculpture. I found some triple beam ohaus scales. Wich are the "Dail Ogram" series. I have used the ones like yours for years. But now I have this dial o gram set. without any paper work. Do you understand how to use the "Dial Ogram's" I weigh my container as usual right? Then add the weight amount of rubber I use i.e. 400 grams. balancing this out. Then I need to weigh in 20 grams of catylist. When do I use the dial and front tare? Any help would be great!

By the same token, you could measure the weight of a "sip" of coffee, comparing the weights of your coffee cup before and after drinking.

The dial on the back of mine does nothing! Help!

Make sure first to check that all the sliders are in the "zero" position. Then, if the top plate is very dirty, the dial for fine tuning might not be able to move far enough. (This is not really likely, but is the easiest and fastest possibility to deal with.) Clean the plate first. Make sure you have nothing on it. If it is neither of those things, then something probably really is bent or broken. It might very likely be fixable, but would be hard to diagnose via messages like this.

Not on mine. Since you asked as a serious question though, let me answer scientifically: "Mass" is independent of the type of material, and the gram is a well-defined unit, so the device could be used to measure appropriate amounts of anything. That said, if you are measuring small amounts for retail, if what you are measuring costs about $100 per gram (which Wikipedia says that does), you might need a device that has less experimental uncertainty than 0.1 grams.

You should have used a standard weight ( 250 or 500 grams ) to see how accurate is the actual scale, because by doing it with the cup, you will never now if the scale is accurate or not. You can do this with U.S. coin currency, a U.S. nickel is exactly 5 grams, so 100 nickels should be very close to 500 grams if the nickels are still in good shape. Also a U.S. penny is exactly 2.5 grams, that will give you something to test the accuracy of the scale, please share the outcome if you do it to see if those scales are worthy of purchase, thank you.

the scale is marked as 0,1,2,3,4,5 , 6, 7, 8 9 , so why is Jim calling it 100, 200 ... 500 It is hard to see, blurry. Does that say 0.5, at the far right.
