Using A Troy Bilt Hiller/Furrower | Garden Update | Man About Home
It's time to dig some hills/furrows in our vegetable garden. And 200 feet of furrows is a lot of back breaking labor!
When I got my Troy Bilt Horse tiller, it came with a New Old Stock Hiller/Furrower, still in the sealed box
like it was new.
I decided it's time to put it to good use. So in this video, I'm unboxing, assembling and installing it. Then I'm using it for the first time in our garden.
Putting my learning curve aside, it works really well. After I've had a little more practice using the hiller/furrower attachment, my results will be great and it'll save me hours of hard work.
If you get any value out of this, please hit that thumbs up!
It's all about experience.

I bought the 7 hp Kohler model in 1984 with the hiller/furrowed and still have it. It starts on first or second pull.

I wish every gas powered machine was as reliable and easy to maintain as these tillers. I have a hand me down horse that was new in the early 80’s. It has been used every season since my “Paw Paw” bought it for prep and maintenance on corn, potato and garden patches. Nan must have walked a few thousand miles behind/beside it in her day and my Uncle and I share it now. Other than it beating down a few sets of tines till they were almost straight it hasn’t needed any real parts other than a couple of oil seals, fuel line/filters, and tires, that were all pretty easy to change out. It sits unused/unstarted in an unheated pole shed in the off season for about four months straight and never asks for more than some new/fresh gas and a couple pulls on the rope. Dang they’re impressive at what they do!

Hey I'm 73 yrs old, I've been using my 1988 Troy Bilt horse every year. If you grow Potatoes? This Tiller with your plow Attachment is a must. I still my ground, then lay off my Furrows with the big plow which you have. I allow 4 feet between rows, and don't plant the potatoes in the Furrows! Take a hoe and pull a furrow about 4" deep in the top of the ridge. I use a small amount in the Furrows, I use 10-10-10 fertilizer. Then plant your potatoes, then when they come up through the row, shave the weeds, and forget them until the vines die down, then HAPPY DIGGING!!! I PLANTED 5 25' ROWS LAST YEAR, THREE YUKON GOLD, AND TWO KENNEBEC'S. I still have a few potatoes left. It's just my wife and me. We counted 14 Walmart bags and 2 five gallon buckets that we gave away. I PLANTED 24# each of the Yukon, and Kennebec's. I cut them before planting, and let them set and the cuts heal over about three days b-4 planting that prevents them from rotting, and I cut at least 2 eyes per piece (sprouts). Super simple to grow using the TROY BILT HORSE. I string out all my rows, then use the plow without the flaps for my beans and corn etc, and make those rows about 4" deep. And leave about 3' Between the rows, depending on what kind of corn and beans you are growing. I'm in Indiana now. But I was born in Leslie Co. Kentucky and we grew everything we ate except our Meat. I've been in Indiana since the summer of 1966. Hey happy growing! Thrills me to find another real gardener!

It thrills me that you implied I'm a real gardener! I have a lot to learn. But we're enjoying our harvests, and will be expanding outside our fenced in garden this year with pumpkins and water melons. Not sure how that's going to work out, but we have good starts going and they'll be in the ground as soon as the clay dries dry enough. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Thanks for watching!

Good to see your video! I have 1973 Troy Built Horse Professional model. 7 HP Kohler. It's a beast. I have all the original paper work. It shows all the attachments. Even a snow blade for front installation. Sure don't make the like they used to.

Do some poking around online and you’ll see that the manufacturer has made several other attachments for them over the years. I’ve never seen them in person but have found pics/videos of a hydraulic wood splitter, generator, wood chipper, etc. and probably another one or two I can’t recall. I even seen a video of a wheeled seat with a pivoting attachment (for steering with the handles) and ball hitch so it could be used/ridden like a small garden tractor towing a cart.

I have one of these Tillers. They are wonderful for open field and when you have plenty of room. They are a pain to maneuver in small fenced gardens. I learned from you to rearrange my rows to have long rows.
@manabouthome
@manabouthome Жыл бұрын
As I expand my fenced in garden area, I've come to the conclusion that my 5 foot high welded wire fencing will need to be easily removed at the start and ends of my furrows. That will allow me to take it down for tilling, then put it back up when the tilling is done. Other wise I'd have to fence in a much larger area just to accommodate turning the tiller around at the start and end of each row... that costs too much! I'll be securing my fencing to the posts (which won't have to be moved) with plastic cable.zip ties. Easy on, easy off. And yes, the longer I make my rows, the fewer times I'll have to turn around. Thank you for watching and commenting!

They work really well. You must use high range to get its best output. I had one it would hill potatoes plants.set the depth gage all the way up.

I'm in my fourth year of using a Horse Tillers with the Hiller Furrower. I have to raise the hills so my plants will have dryer feet in our west NE Texas Springs. I pre till the soil for several passes as deep as I can. In spite of this during the making of three or more rows, the machine will crawl left or right for some reason leaving a lot of reshaping with a rake. Seems I can't true the rows up with the tiller. It seems I'm magnetically drawn to space my rows 36" center to center yet when growing anything other than single row onions, that proves too narrow for later cultivation. I've offset this by using a hiller/furrower from one of my old Pony Tillers which is narrower which helps. In other parts of my gardening, I use a David Bradley with several implements, a Farmall Cub and a Super A Wider spaced in those instances. With all that though, I always find a use for the Horse Tiller. Also in our area, Grazon treated hay in the past has knocked some of my crops in the head causing me to discontinue it. It's hard to find around here that it hasn't been used on. Thanks for sharing your video.

Yeah, there’s even a few aftermarket ones available. Troybilt “hillers” are pretty much a universal fit and as long as the one you’re looking at is made for a “troybilt rear-tine rototiller” it should work/fit.
