One thing you did not cover is usability on telephone networks. I still use my Alcatel Onetouch Fierce XL which was released in early 2016. It has a modem which has VoLTE in which most carriers in North America have switched over to. As of now, for the USA it only works with T-Mobile. It was working with AT&T for a while after their switch over, but seems to have been blacklisted now on their network. For Mexico, they have also switched over to VoLTE and all my non VoLTE smart phones will no longer connect to any cell carrier, but the Alcatel Onetouch Fierce XL still functions with all carriers, including AT&T Mexico. What's better is after I had to replace the SIM chips with the newer ones for VoLTE, I no longer have to go into carrier settings to go in and set the API details. Those settings are now done automatically.

It'd be cool to see a windows phone comeback, especially with how ARM processors are becoming more prominent, and most "apps" have a webapp version (snapchat, instagram, etc. all work in browsers now) so there's really no barriers when it can essentially be windows 11 repackaged to work as a phone.
@ImportantTech
@ImportantTech 11 ай бұрын
Would be interesting, but I don't think a lot of people would buy it. Even with the web app versions
@abrahamdsl
@abrahamdsl 9 ай бұрын
INDEED, if they can get Microsoft Edge Desktop to really work in Desktop mode but show up/render as mobile-friendly in phone, that would be great. Really, as almost all "apps" now indeed can be used with almost 100.00% functionality if not already 100.00%, from the browser/without downloading and installing the dedicated "app".

I got my windows phone in 2013, the Nokia Lumia 820, absolutely beautiful phone, wireless charging, removable battery. And ten years later it's still working fine. Always loved UI as it was smooth and looked far better than rows and pages of icons. I really wished that developers had supported it more and brought out the equivalent windows apps.

Yes! I remember buying one of my first phones. It was the Lumia 435. It had animations so that it didn't feel like a slow phone. And the phone was optimized. Actually the Nokia Lumia (before Microsoft bought Nokia) were the first 820 and 920 to wireless charging. Windows Phone basically had better features from always on display, dark mode etc just the lack of apps killed the platform, but third party were always better options back than as a former Windows Phone user myself.

Had the Lumia 630 as my first smartphone in 2015 (was using a Nokia 2690 prior to that), and the performance was the one thing that really got me impressed, back then low and mid tier android phones were pretty horrible performance wise, the only android experience I had back then was through friends and family phones, seeing how the Lumia performed always brought a smile to my face. It's sad that MS decided to drop the Windows mobile, but recently satya nadella said that he regrets that decision, so maybe there's still hope. Perhaps with the Windows Subsystem for Android we might see Windows phone come back to life with some sort of an android app enabled echo system implemented.

I really miss the Windows experience. I was hooked to it since the early days of Windows mobile 5 and the PDAs all the way up to Lumia 950 and the Windows Insider. It was truly an adventure to receive a new update every week. Most of the time there were bugs that reappeared months after they were apparently fixed. Windows phones were really ahead of their time. They were the real driver of innovation and all other OSes were heavily copying.

Awesome video, brings back memories! Had this exact phone back in 2016 because I dropped my 640 XL. Got my 950 for around 300 euros which was a pretty good deal for the specs back then. The stability of it was disappointing compared to WP8.1 and even WM10 on the 640 XL I remember. Also wondered if the 950's Snapdragon had an actual dragon inside because it ran HOT. Software updates eventually made it workable as long as you weren't using it while charging though. Still liked the OS, and mostly used the browser for many things which worked okay. Loved the Continuum feature for browsing the web and writing quick school documents in Word while listening to music in Audiocloud (third party Soundcloud app), or emulating games/watching KZfaq in the MyTube app. Used it for around year and a half and got myself a Note 9 in 2018, which I'm still using. Installed LineageOS without Google Services, and funnily enough using it in the same way I used Windows Phone with the browser haha.

@ImportantTech

I agree. Google probably knew that their apps not on the Windows store, made a pretty big impact so people would buy an android instead. However, when Windows 10 mobile was launched, they also had too many bugs compared to the older windows 8 mobile. They did try to fix it with software updates, but sometimes it was still a bit unreliable. I had issues with the camera not starting up sometimes, or loading very long on the home screen.

They also had a couple of phones with interesting gimmicks, such as a slide out loud speaker. The 8x series was cool with their bolder choices in color. Windows Phone in general was nice. The phone runs very smooth, battery is removable, SD card slot, amazing camera, AND... the FM radio!!! All packed in at a very reasonable price... the apps didn't affect me coz all the apps I personally use were actually available in Windows store at the time. I could see - at a glance! - the time, how many texts, emails, voicemails I had. I could just take the phone out of my pocket and the display would come on. Again, showing the same things. When I finally had to get an Android (and an iPhone for work), I couldn't believe how terrible they were. To this day, neither offer that same experience. Likewise, the real button for the camera was excellent. So much more intuitive, steady and quick. And, of the course, the OLED display was gorgeous - ahead of Retina.

I still have Lumia 950. It is used by my smaller daughter as a player and camera. I had to buy new battery 2 times for it. But so far so good. It does work and Groove is a nice app and camera is a bit slow, but the lens is crisp and large, therefore the photos made by the camera are of a good quality.

I'm a windows pc user. Currently most pc in market are run by windows. A big reason an iphone user gets a mac is due to ecosystem & mac is slowly increasing market share. If microsoft is able to incorporate apps properly, can offer a seamless experience with phone & pc, especially with office apps, i will get an windows phone without hesitation.

What made Windows Phone so dangerous imo was the ability to TRULY add more internal storage via Micro SD card and I could also remove carrier bloatware.

It's really a shame that Microsoft didn't try harder to get developers to make apps for their phones. I really liked the simple yet elegant UI and would love to have a reasonable third option aside from just iOS and Android.

they tried way harder than required. Every 6 months leaks for new version, drastic changes. Windows 8 mobile is no similar to windows 7. Windows 8 was good, 8.1 great & 10 big shit. There was no need for android layer or iOS layer. Apps were coming with organic speed, but there was no stability from MS. They should have patients, should never brought Nokia.

I never had a windows phone but i think something like this has a lot of potential, to be able to use the phone and computer on the same system and even connecting the phone and using it as a computer as you showed in the video, i didnt even know that that was an option. It is of course extremely hard to take a market share in an already pretty mature market so it was almost bound to fail unless they had put unreasonably much money into it.

@@n.eizzati RE about "also *kinda* has a similar feature..." you got the _kinda_ part right, as for the actual rest of it.... the truth is samsung DEX *sucks* like *rotten tomatoes.* I have it on good phones an S21 Ultra & a Note 20 Ultra as well as a Tab S6 those are all $$xpen$ive high-end devices, yet, when I run DEX from any of them say an image/video app that has extra controls like ISO Shutter Speeds etc etc well the app will launch but only the basic Take Picture or Record Video work. What the hell is the point of saying how great it is and claiming a user can "run all their apps on a windows laptop/desktop" blah-blah when it turns out does *barely* any more than a glorified screen mirror. Strange how on 3 different devices *none* of them run DEX the way it gets promoted to supposedly do. And by the way, I have multiple laptops/desktops, and none of them are garbage either, and- like my phones/tablets, they are all $$$ quality machines with robust cpu's & graphics cards, virus-free, run flawlessly otherwise, speedy & stable, but when it comes to DEX it's the same result on *any* of those machines. DEX is _extremely_ overhyped _IMHO._ And as if that's not bad enough Samsung decided that if a user isn't using a Samsung brand monitor then it takes away the Android built-in screen-casting mirroring capability. No baloney, it *used* to be in there, and *work* , but not that long ago ole' Samsung decided to _sodomize_ their user-base and yank screencasting out, trying to force users to buy their monitors if they value & want screencasting that much... what a lowball D-bag move, the scumbags...strongarm tactic... That's why I even use DEX at all. I don't even like DEX, and half the time use LetsView for mirroring, but LetsView app has zero functional controls not even the few DEX has, although it's pretty stable. I'm strongly considering my next phone *wont* be a samsung. I wish LG would come back on the market. Their phones were always very competitive at budget-friendly prices. I miss them... -take it easy...

I loved Windows Phone and how it could run amazingly even on the lowest end of the hardware spectrum, i owned several Lumia Phones, the 920, 830, 525 and 535, and all never disappointed except on the app front. I think this day and age would be the perfect time to bring Windows Phone back especially as ARM processors have gotten stupid powerful and AI as well as Compatibility layers could easily turn Microsoft Continuum in what it was meant to be.

The reasoning of WP failure was not a lack of apps or lack of users, it was an inappropriate concept and terrible execution. The sort of trying to sit all the chairs at once. Also there was a huge lack of consistency. You can easily separate all the stages which they turned when previous failed and there was no way given to drag users from one stage to another without buying the new hardware, and users are not happy when they left with failed software and a promise that the new one will be better, but you should buy one more phone to try it. Stage one was WP 7 - 7.5, this stage is known for the following mistakes: 1) despite not making hardware, create the one and only hardware option for the partners to produce 2) despite this one hardware option, OS update still is not possible flawlessly without partners to make their own firmware build 3) very strict limitation for what the apps can and can't do, almost no possibility to utilize any type of hardware available for the non-system apps 4) No fresh hardware was introduced during this stage, making any newest flagship with WP 7.5 already outdated on day 1. Stage two was WP 8 era. One and a half important things here: 1) WP8 did not support any 7.5 hardware 1.5) Nokia was a chosen one with others partners left in the shadow. The 1st thing actually made users angry and I assume no user of HTC, Samsung or any other WP device decided to go for an upgrade for the yet another WP device. WP 8 was so different that it automatically made all 7 series outdated. So, you could either upgrade or be within outdated apps and no new stuff at all, even if you just bought your new Nokia flagship a few months before. Speaking of Nokia - it was the only brand left with some userbase. But it was not enough for the ecosystem to work. I think, made they 7.5 - 8.0 upgrade possible, it would save WP program. Without it, they actually dropped people who were willing to use half backed 7 version and had some trust. All the other milestones were just nothing anymore. Trying to engage small manufactures to preset their device did not work, due to people buying those to be part of a big ecosystem for small money, there was no big ecosystem with WP. Computer in a pocket did not work either, because it was lacking the capability of real pocket PC, looking more like a gimmick. There still was a huge lack of major apps and services. So, basically, WP was dead after 8 launch.

I also had a Windows Phone back in the day. It would've been nice if they continued. Technically it was miles ahead of Andriod of iOS at the time. The apps were a bit annoying, but I actually had every app I needed, including all the banking apps, socials, media, an pretty much everything else. Mobile games were lacking despite the XBox affiliation I think, but I don't game on my phone. Activity specific apps might also have been lacking, but I didn't really supplement my activitities with my phone at the time.
