Using active balancer on ebike battery

I noticed my Ebike battery was out of balance so i decided to use an active balancer to rebalance the entire battery. It work, just took a long time, but as part of an annual routine maintenance program on a battery, i think its a good idea!

Thanks Steven. I was thinking of trying the same thing with mine - I bought mine after watching your video about it. I also purchased a 5amp balancer that let's you choose between 4 to 48 series battery packs. Now I know it will work. I knew there was a reason I subscribed to you a couple years ago lol. 😊😊👍 WOW - looks like my comment is the first...

Nice job Steven, Thanks for explaining everything. I personally do it a bit different. I top charge with some success but very seldom because I don't like to maximum charge either 52 v battery I own. If I sense an issue, say a battery starts to short charge and gets nowhere near 58.8 volts max charge and charger shuts off because BMS max charges strongest cells and weak cells fall out of line...I only learn this by falling well short of 58.8v max charge because I rarely charge my batteries over 56-57v...then I take the battery apart and manually balance charge parallel group or groups responsible. If determined weak cells continue to fall out of line with stronger cells based upon subsquent charges, I replace the cells that are weak in a given parallel group. When more weakness shows up throughout the pack, I ultimately replace the pack, hopefully after hundreds of charges. How I roll. I have avoided using smart BMS's with voltage readouts or active charging at lower voltages which I wish was available with standard ebike batteries becausa as you explain, top charging has its limitations and maximum charging Li-Ion cells degrades cell life. Key to cell life other than not hammering a battery with maximum current draw is... 1. Top quality, name brand cells like Samsung, Panasonic etc 2. Short charging battery 3. Choosing a large enough battery capacity with more parallel cells such that a typical ebike trip uses less than 50% or so of the battery capacity. Cheers.

Very interesting. I have that same battery tester. I never thought about using it that way. I think that's a good way to use it. That way you can monitor all the cells instead of depending on the BMS. You don't really know the results of that without testing it. One thing I will tell you is I've had a lot of batteries and the number one cell always seems to be worse than the rest of them. Some with BMS and some I charge through a charger. I would like to know if anybody else out there has a problem like that. Love the video.

Well yeah cheap bms dont want to step down the full battery pack voltage to 3v so they rather just use the sweet sweet 3-4.2v from the first cell, making the first cell suffer more

Hey steven i really love your content ! Thank you for sharing with us your knowledge. I've just ordered this balancer and im asking myself what happens if one group is significantly discharged like for example 2.5 volts or even less ? Is this device going to balance it anyway or are there any restrictions on how low the weakest group can be ? If you know answer for this question i would really appriciate it ! Thank You one more time !

Most devices don't like cells below about 2.5v. you might have to hook up a power supply and bring the voltage of the low group up above 3v.

To me it seems you have issue with cells in 1st group. After a couple of discharge cycles you should see the difference in the cell voltage higher again. The best method to determine if group one is bad is to have battery under load and then use the cell monitor - if group one is weaker then the rest then you'll see the "cell voltage difference" go higher and higher

So its been a few months...the grand question...what spot welder are you using the most😅?

BRFIC is my go to but it gets really hot quickly. Lately I have been using the 3 pulse spot welder I reviewed 9 months ago.

Great video, thanks! Isn’t the Neey a better option since it is compatible with other string configs?

Yeah ive been considering the Neey. It is more expensive, but i do like the ability to do multiple strings
