-Artificially intelligent (AI) chatbots are generative tools that produce text, images, code, and other media in response to questions or requests;
- AI chatbots can answer complex questions in a balanced and objective manner as long as the questions are equally balanced and objective;
-AI chatbots are useful tools being developed by a number of companies - but are only as useful or as good or bad as the people using them;
- The more hands AI technology is in, the greater the balance of power established, preventing monopolies and deterring abuse;

"Artificial Intelegence" is a marketing term, the only intellegence involved is in the programming. What you get out of it, depends on what is programmed, it is a tool, it can be used for whatever the programmers want it to. No. Not "just an improved algorithm". It is qualitatively and quantitatively different from "an algorithm" as we usually understand that term. The biggest difference between machine learning (chat AI) systems and a more "traditional" computer science algorithm is that you can look at the source code of an algorithm, figure out how it works, change it in whole or in part, refactor it, port it to another language etc. Machine learning systems do *not* permit this kind of inspection (by design) - the "algorithm" emerges from whatever the neural network weightings end up "thinking" after many hours of training. If they are trained on junk, they will produce junk. If trained on treasure, they will produce treasure. Systems are already producing excellent approximations of Bach or Mozart, for example. Machine Learning systems are what computer scientists call "garbage in, garbage out" systems. If you train your system on entertainment magazine copy, you're never going to get Dostoevsky-like prose out the other end. If the training material is riddled with propaganda of one sort or another (it ALWAYS is), the output will reflect that. It is a mistake to see these systems as "just another algorithm". Regarding the intentions however, I fully agree. You typically have to give up your google (or other) id in order to use these systems. They are harvesting input, and will sell it back to us (or to spook agencies, or insurance firms) at some point.That is a non-trivial problem. Another big problem is that as people use the output of machine learning systems in their own work, over time an increasing amount of training data will inevitably have originated in the machine learning systems themselves. A few research projects have explored this issue, and they indicate that when a certain threshold (ratio of original vs. AI-generated) is reached, the system will tend away from the remarkable, the innovative, towards boring similarity, towards existing idioms - in short they become less "creative". This mechanical blandness is the near future of pop music, sports journalism etc. How to avoid it? Make sure that human creators are always involved in the authoring process. Will the mainstream content industry do this? Of course they will not. They are chasing profits. Therefore we must expect mainstream media and discourse to get dumber and dumber. What a time to be alive!

Open source is no good in the case of AI. Compute is key, millions even billions worth of hardware to run top-notch AI. Nobody but nation-sized entities can have that option. The source-code itself will not help anybody. No, for decent AI, you and I must login to Big AI's cloud. They will record, analyze and categorize everything we do with it. We will forever be kept in heavily rubberized sandboxes, for our own protection, of course :/

Like other tools, it can be used for good & bad, and is shaped by its creator. It's now more possible that small businesses & individuals do more, potentially competing with big corps, or at least make an impact with the help of AI. Other than these famous ones likel Gemini, ChatGPT, and Copilot, companies from other nations like Russia & China are developing these AI tools, as well as many others by smaller companies and open-source alternatives developed by community of individuals. So I think it's a good idea to be open to these other AI tools as well. There will be great potential for more open AI tools when devices get more powerful & more accessible, to the point where people can run local AI models of their choosing themselves, and not having to rely on big AI services. It's good to see more videos on more variety of topics. Can't wait for the video on the home backyard farm.

These chatbots are very good with language. With the appropriate instructions I believe they could provide a very efficient way of identifying biases in how a topic is covered, not only providing every detail and the reason why it's considered biased but also aggregate statistics for a large number of articles. Should you for example be interested in studying the bias of MSM while being able back up any assertions with a massive amounts of data. Meanwhile MSM could not simply remove the offending details and scrub their articles as they then would no longer function as propaganda and hence be useless to them.

LLMs like Gemini and ChatGPT are trained on a lot of text, and if that text is biased, then their responses will also be biased. A lot of the time they will sound like mainstream media, because the mainstream media produces a lot of text that real people seldom read, but that text is used to train LLMs. It is important to remember that they are not necessarily objective sources of information, but more like the average of all the bias that exists in so-called "respectable" media. If you ask them about topics that are not politically controversial, like Brian's hydroponics project, they'll give you perfectly fine answers. If you ask them about something like the Ukraine war, you'll find a lot of Western bias.

Brian, you might like Anatol Rapoport's rules. Here they are with a little explanation. ------------------------------------------ Anatol Rapoport provides the following rules to help us resist the urge to paint an unfair caricature of an opponent’s position. 1. You should attempt to re-express your target’s position so clearly, vividly, and fairly that your target says, “Thanks, I wish I’d thought of putting it that way.” 2. You should list any points of agreement (especially if they are not matters of general or widespread agreement). 3. You should mention anything you have learned from your target. 4. Only then are you permitted to say so much as a word of rebuttal or criticism. By following these guidelines, your opponent may be a more receptive audience for your criticism. You’ve shown that you understand their position and at least have the good judgement to agree with some of what they say.

Very informative. As a regular chatvot user I can confirm what you say. It's usefulness is solely dependent on the user. In fact you have to understand very well how chatbots work because if they don't know something particularly they are just very good at lying that they do. So be critical, ask different questions and check the answers for legitimacy. Just like how you would do in the internet generally.

You have just convinced me to use one of these. I was always skeptical of using them due to them possibly being used for neferious reasons!

I couldn't agree more, these tools are as good as the people using them. Is like the internet back in the early days. You could use it for drug trafficking, or to educate yourself about a certain topic. Tools aren't evil, people are.
