I think I'd use coconut oil instead of olive oil. It will form a solid cream if kept cool yet in a warm environment like a sunny window it melts to an oil and is great for your skin.

I view the medical profession as detrimental to good health based on my experience with many of them, they have no compassion and do the exact opposite making people worse they have become corrupt salesman for labs selling poison chemicals with charlatanism on top. The true result of the activity of most doctors is undertakers because that's what is the result of their false trade and many recognize it after they retire. Excellent as always Adam! I came across a video a few years back where a guy extracted the essential oil from birch bark. He cautioned it was SUPER strong and should be heavily diluted with a carrier oil. Of course this was concentrated essential oil of birch bark. Chaga is awesome! Wish we had some in our area but I haven't found any yet. Thanks Adam!

My goat had a foot infection so I made a salve with pine pitch, local juniper berries, olive oil, beeswax, and cloves. Just some stuff I had on hand but it worked! Nice to know about birch, we have river birch around here so I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the great info!

Thank You Adam, I have many Black Birch trees on my 8 acres here in Lancaster County. Something that may interest you are my Grandmother's pressed wild plant mounts from her 1912 botany class at Elizabethrown College. There are perhaps 80 or so examples beautifully mounted with all info required. Some of them could be matted and framed, as they are so nicely done. For example, here in my woods, part of hundreds of acres of woodland and a county park, there were pink and yellow Lady Slippers growing. My Grandparents farm was very close to me and part of the same ecosystem. They knew wild plants well and Loved them as well. As a kid we'd go on nature walks identifying plants, birds and trees. I cannot mat and frame all these plants nor would I. But a seed bank or a research lab that deals with plants perhaps could use the DNA. Your ideas on this would be appreciated. This is a great site! It is fact , people can eat trees (not fruits alone) bark can provide nutrition. Benefits from plants from - start with fresh so yes you have to cut part off , clean and dry CORRECTLY. Finish , tea infusions will have all the compounds originally found within. ie proteins fats carbs. That's it! Doug. Many store products contain improperly dried vegetation or stale expired materials, why foraging is only way.

It seems the Birch tree really does EVERYTHING. Food, water, soap, medicine, fire. You can even get high from the Amanita Muscaria mushrooms that tend to grow near it in the Autumn. What a tree!

Well done. I make a birch Polypore coconut oil makeup remover that is fantastic I also make a valerian salve using (raw, unrefined, organic) coconut oil by soaking fresh wild valerian root for a few weeks until the oil acquires the strong valerian scent. Then I harden it with beeswax. I also make a callendula chapstick with fresh petals soaked in coconut oil then hardened with a little bees wax. Best chapstick I’ve ever had.

I have an issue where just some of the tips or my fingers peel. I read that a Swedish physician in 1851 used Norwegian Spruce for tough to heal skin conditions. I just harvested, sustainably, some Norwegian Spruce pitch and now I want to mix it with some bitch bark in oil and make a salve. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge 🥰

It is rendered from the bark by fire and a collection pot under another pot that contains a collection of bark, the pot is smothered and can not combust but the oils in the bark loosen up and drain out a weep hole into a second pot buried under the first pot, its insulated with dirt under the whole fire. Hi Adam! You are the researcher I come to first when I want factual information on the plants in my forest. This year I found some elderberry trees in my area and was pleased to discover the beneficial properties of the fruit. I am very curious about the uses of other parts of this tree. I see that phytocides are the properties extracted as a preservative for creams and lotions but can’t find how this is extracted. Do you have any useful information that a home crafter can use to preserve our forest medicines using the elderberry plant? Thank you.

Interesting. Xylitol comes from birchbark. It is very good for the gums, skin and gut. I can see how birch bark would be beneficial.

Hi Adam, could you please recommend the best , strongest wild plant for my cat paronychia of his all cuticles. He was born as a weak of the pack and I apply all kids of stuff 2ce DAILY around each of his cuticles, for over 10 years!!! I tried so many things... I give him good food and supplements... Some seem to work for a couple of weeks, but then bacteria gets used to it and I have to switch for something else. PLs keep in mind that he licks stuff that I apply , so it shouldnt harm him. thank you in advance.

In the medicinal realm he writes "The paper birch has several layers of bark, the innermost one being finely grained, thin, and tough. Woodsmen of the north use it instead of adhesive tape to cover wounds. It hardens under soap and water and lasts for days on end." Has anyone any experience with this use?
