My mother born 1918, used wire and cord to make baskets with rags, grasses and yarns. Good for you for showing this. Being raised in Humboldt County, CA, I last used Hemp. You did a great job of describing and teaching how to start!

These baskets are really handy! I crocheted a large basket with handles using the plastic wrapped steel clothesline and a worsted weight yarn held together with a bulky weight yarn. I can carry a large blanket or quilt I'm working on in it.

I have been trying to figure out how to use this technique to make square bottom baskets and flat rectangular mats. Any thoughts appreciated!
@katrinascreationscrafting
@katrinascreationscrafting 2 жыл бұрын
I've never made a rectangle one, but here goes. I would crochet the base separately to the size that you want. Then, I would crochet into the edges of the rectangle to form the sides. Make sure to add additional stitches into the corners so it doesn't bunch up. I hope that helps, but it just a guess.

Hi Katarina, that video was done several years ago. I have 2 newer versions of making a basket with clothes line that might be more helpful. Here is the link kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b912etKKmM-snZ8.html The baskets (I have 4) have all held up well. I use them at craft fairs and they fit perfectly into storage cubby units. I hope the newer tutorials are more helpful.

11:10 can this be done using fabric instead of yarn?
@katrinascreationscrafting
@katrinascreationscrafting Ай бұрын
I would think you could if the strips were thin enough. You might not even need the cloths line because the fabric might be dense enough to hold the shape. Great idea! I might have to give that a try.

@katrinascreationscrafting
@katrinascreationscrafting 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah, I don't think I said how much yarn. I held the yarn double and I had 2 Pound of Love skeins from Lion Brand. I was able to make 3 baskets and still have some left over. I did end up buying more clothes line for the 3rd basket. I didn't follow a pattern, I made the base the size that would fit the cabinet I was using it in and then stopped increasing and crocheting upwards until it reached the height that I wanted. I hope that helps.

Fantastic idea! To do the magic circle there is a much easier way than the way you do it. To make a magic circle it is the same as a slip knot BUT instead of bringing the yarn towards you and then pulling it through the loop. To make the magic hold the non working yarn in your non dominant hand and the working yarn (the end that is attached to the skein/ball etc), bring that end towards the other but make a circle and where the yarns cross you grab it with your non dominant hand, then pull the working yarn towards you through the loop. Use the hook to bring the yarn up and secure the with a slip stitch and off you go. If you don't understand let me know and I will make a vide4o for you. Trying to get some video's up and get my channel going!

I really don’t like this idea that much mainly because the clothes line is visible through the yarn. And also it take way to long I think. That last part I don’t know but watching you it looked as if you were having a really hard time and could have done that a lot faster without the clothesline
@katrinascreationscrafting
@katrinascreationscrafting 3 жыл бұрын
You are right that the clothesline shows through. and it can be a little difficult to maneuver, but I like that it helps the basket hold its shape. If I had used a thicker, or stiffer yarn, I might have been able to skip the clothes line.
