3 Day Sale on all my DJ Courses - ends Monday!

If you want to get my free mini course with free videos on set preparation, mixing in key, where to set cues etc, go to this link:

Learning how to mix solely with your DJ headphones is a really good skill to have and whenever you see DJs wearing in ear monitors that’s exactly what they’re doing. The advantages of mixing with your headphones on the whole time is: you can hear everything so much better, which means greater control of your EQ, FX and the overall sound of your mix, not to mention you can turn off your speaker when playing at home and play all night without concern of noise complaints.

this guy absolutely knows what hes talking about. headphone master/cue knobs are an absolute god-sent at peak time when everything around you is dark, loud and crazy, in a club with a shitty sound system, or when the monitor crapped out for some reason. knowing how to send it all directly to your ears is crucial in these situations. you can just create your own personal shangri-la for 20-30 seconds when ear-fatigue has set in and you are lost in the mix and really dont want to fuck up your next transition because you are recording or something. its an invaluable tool to manage your anxiety in these certain stressful situations. cheers m8

learned mixing without a monitor ages ago, this is really good stuff to teach the youngins. good work. oh and a point I think you didn't touch on is that you definitely need to take your headphones off while playing so you can hear what it sounds like, in addition to hearing the crowd. Your headphones always sound the same, the venue doesn't. Maybe the mixer doesn't. You are responsible for how it sounds in that room at that time. The levels of bass etc might sound perfect inside your headphones, but the room is booming with too much bass or the highs are like knives in peoples ears.

Ive started doing this only in this last year. On Denon kit you have "Split cue", not sure if thats on Pioneer or others. But i can have the master in my right ear, and Cue on the left. It took some getting used too but now i really like using it this way. Even when im in the radio studio doing a live set on FM i just leave my in-ear earphones in for the whole time. Never using Booth or studio monitors, just dont need them. Also when at home and doing this, it leaves my Booth-Out empty, so i now use this feed for live streams and capture the audio from the booth output.

Iv'e watched so many videos about mixing in just Headphones, & you have explained it so much better than anyone else! Your a born teacher! Iv'e mixed without taking my headphones off for years, coz when i used to play at outdoor festivals & dingy clubs, the monotors where crap! I even used to take a separate Amp to connect to the mixer, so i could turn up the volume for the Headphones, coz the mixers where rubbish & was a struggle to hear! But now i only play at home for fun, & very rarely take them off as i can hear every little detail (so much better than listening to a Monitor) But each to there own! Love watching your videos Andrew, wish i would of had the options people have today (Videos, Mixing courses) Etc! What is the youngest age for your courses? My Son is 6 & i want him to learn, as does he, but when i try & let him on my Decks he just messes about & looses concentration, then i loose interest & we don't get anywhere. Anyway Buddy, Keep smiling.....

Dude you are 100 percent right, i am half deaf in one ear and I find this method with the cue mix knob so much easier than mixing to a quiet monitor, I find having the cue mix knob at 10 or 11oclock you can really monitor the track that's going out good as well. Some other guy on youtube made a video about mixing with no headphones and how the big djs are just so good they dont need them, what a load of rubbish they are just using sync and line matching, you are better mixing with only headphones than without them if your doing it properly. Cool video anywayz!!!

When I started out playing some 7ish years ago I learnt off of the old school DJ's and they only use one head phone and a booth monitor. One day the booth monitor broke and the mixing to say the least was rough as houses. It took me a while to learn the technique in this video but I wish I'd known it at the time when the booth monitor broke! I think a lot of us modern DJs become reliant and lazy watching the waveform on our macs however when you do back to backs and DJ swap-overs, this technique is so important once again.

its how i started mixing with vinyl and tried various ways to mix in headphones or out loud, the other way i use is having both earphones on and have the cued up track playing in headphones but quiter than the track playing out and find the balance in the beats between them then fine tune using the headphone mix

I started mixing about 20 years ago on a denon dual cd player, like the 2100F along wtih a basic numark mixer with no gains and one 5 band eq for all channels. Additionally, i had no monitors. The speakers were a good 1m in front of me. Trying to mix out loud was challenging, as there was slight delays. I had to learn to mix in my headphones. Admittedly, in loud clubs, i often had my headphones really loud as a result. A lot of djs taking over were a little shocked at why my headphones were so loud. It was just due to finding it easier to hear the two tracks together.

Using headphones 🎧 only can be quite difficult. Lol made my wife a mix once with just headphones, hahahaha, it was interesting to say the least. I’ve been using the cheaper Pioneer HDJ-1500’s for 6 years. They are ok for using at events because the BASS can be felt, but for just headphone mixing not up to par. Just mentioning I’m not a fan of wireless anything with events. XLR’s and 1/4” only. I’ll also add that your less apt to forget a piece of equipment when it come time to pack up after😉 As always, a good learning experience Andrew. Thanks.

Maybe you could do a video on prepping people to be prepared for / how to tackle obscure gear. Especially for those starting out. A lot of smaller bars and clubs often have mismatched gear and its usually not the latest gear as they've either bought different gear to save money or they're using older gear for the same reason, as they don't have someone there advising them of the value of servicing/updating gear. Over my dj career, i've lost count of the amount of times i've turned up to a venue to find random gear and mis-matched. If i wasn't prepared to a degree, i'd have struggled.

I’m new to DJ’ing in headphones.I thought it should be about time I considered my neighbours(I live in ground floor unit with people living directly above and adjacent)so learning how to mix just using headphones and it’s good for using isolation(total kill EQ)ramp up the fader and just bring in track with EQ’s. I must get myself an inexpensive enough($79)pair of ear plugs from store dj so I can crank headphones volume without perforation of eardrums! I’m using an Allen and Heath Xone 43 4 channel Analogue mixer with 2 x Denon SC5000M media players. Update: It’s like you were saying about just needing to experiment with your particular mixer and I managed to figure out how to do what you have described on my Allen & Heath Xone 43. I use the channel faders to adjust volumes in both earphones as well as being able to EQ the tracks in both ears! It’s good as I have dual layers(A+B)with waveforms on my players so I can always have 4 tracks displayed simultaneously(good for loops...etc)/and cued tracks to go! Thanks so much mate for this awesome mix in headphones method/tip! 👍

@@aringrey If you haven't used Virtual DJ then I highly recommend it for mixing bassy techno or bass-boosted tracks. The performance pad STEMS feature enables you to cut out one or more musical elements of a track and reintroduce at will (Vocal, Instrumental, Bass, Kick, HiHat). You can also apply STEMS to the EQ and filter knobs (Vocal, melody, kick) making mixing this genre especially suited to the solution. What's more - VDJ is free to use with STEMS included in the 2021 version.

The other for making midnight sets at home, and solo 'parties'. PS: if your booth and headphone is broken while playing vinyl, you can try pre-listening by keeping an ear close to the needle, you will hear the high hats.

Amazing this is just what I need since right now I'm in an apartment complex on the 5th floor. I'm going to be moving out to the suburbs soon to rent my own house. When you talk about your neighbors hearing your music, are you talking about the neighbors at the house all the way next door that's not connected to your place? Are they still able to hear it from within their house, and if they are, do you have to turn it up pretty darn loud for them to be able to hear it? How big of a gap is there between your house and theirs? I do wanna DJ with speakers when I have my own house; I'm probably gonna sound proof it as much as possible if this is the case.

I was test-driving ddj 400 out today and could not figure it out in-store, (the headphones only mixing) I also am so used to mixing with headphones only at home, and any new controller has to have this feature it is essential. Your videos are always so good you are by far one of the best DJs teaching online and I have learned stuff from you thank you. I am now contemplating switching from Traktor Pro 3 to rekordbox but rekordbox looks so complex. I like to beat juggle and drop samples over the playing tracks Traktor always stays in sync and I am used to that. although I believe rekordbox has dynamic beat grids? the question does this mean I can mix disco into house more easily? Does anyone have any knowledge on this to help me switch maybe even Serato? please comment I am mainly a hobbyist dj. massive respect for you for this youtube channel.

How about DJs running also the lighting/SPX board? Say a DJ duo where one runs the sound board and the other runs the lighting/SPX board? By "lighting/SPX" I mean strobe lights, laser lights, fog machines, disco balls, etc. Not just putting such on auto but trying to play with them as the other DJ plays with the music. Of course when one of the duo needs to go to the bathroom, smoke break, etc. the lighting/SPX can be put on auto.

But I suppose a DJ/LJ duo could do the same. What kind of credentials should a LJ have? How would you advertise for one? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Is there any LJ that has their own KZfaq channel? If so, what's the channel's name. I'm not sure if giving a link would have the KZfaq bot flag it as spam.

I really don't understand what's going wrong. I followed what you said with my ddj 400, but when I click the master cue and try to change the levels nothing happens. When I listen to both songs through headphones I can adjust volume level fine but the knob above headphone volume either makes both play together or if I spin it towards "master" it just shuts off the music completely. It's bizarre. And I also can't bring one track in or out with my volume faders while listening to both songs on headphones, it just plays both and I have no control over which one I want to be playing and which one I want to bring in so I just have to listen to both constantly. I give up on using headphones to listen to two songs, honestly. All they're good for is listening to a cued song and getting it ready while the other song plays through my speakers. I've even googled whether there's something wrong with my headphones settings on rekordbox somewhere but come up with nothing. I find djing so frustrating I nearly quit every day!

People that take out all the bass may not use the rest of the EQ. I like using the whole EQ and find if you take out all the bass the sounds a little tinny - I personally like keeping in a little warmth and tweaking the rest of the EQ - based on what I am hearing - experiment yourself or in my course I do a full breakdown - much more detailed - outcome - you can make all your transitions class wether yo know the track or not :)
