Thank you for your advice. I purchased both of your books and DVD videos and your resources have helped me become a better "artist of marketing".

Thank You, Brainard Carey. It is uncanny but not uncommon for me to develop a connection with an individual at long distance. Your presence and your teachings are my morning thoughts and beginning each day. I think You are reading my mind from the East Coast. Today 's message was, again, right on target and timing. I'm helping a beginning Artist with the basics and making comments regularly to my 22 (only) Friends from around the World on Facebook. It works. What I put In I am Getting Back. I also am working towards my Website as my computer skills are better and I will be able to make it happen. Your encouragement patience and genuine caring for your students are appreciated.

This is a very timely video for me. I have started doing a "painting a day" and am working to understand selling via the web. Thanks!

I am so excited to experience your video of bandaid art and washing of feet. I have actually thought about washing peoples feet but not for arts sake. I think it was a spiritual thing, which by the way your wife and you have definitely expounded upon. Your ideas are practical and helpful for us newbies who are for some reason repulsed at the thought of having to entertain curators and delve into the market aspect of art. Im sure you've heard it said "why cant i just paint" I guess thats what separates the newbies from the Seasoned Artist. I divert. What i meant to say is thank you and your wife for the bandaids and all the hard work of taking us all on your journey into the labyrinth of the inner circle of success.

Great video. I've been watching for quite some time now, and even though most of your videos are somewhat difficult for me to use, since I live in Denmark. I'm a portrait artist, and in my country theres not that many who does it, that means there are a lot of competition on getting commissions. That's making most portraits artists dislike each other, and by liking other artists similar in the trade will raise suspicious subscribers. Should I then choose to ignore that, or spend time on others?

you are always good for some quality suggestions am i correct that fanpages cant "comment" but only "share"? so i can only use my personal account to interact....

spend time on others, "like" other people who are interested in the arts, look at museum pages in your area, and comment on those pages, and get into a conversation. make more comments on other peoples pages that you truly like. if you like another artist or a museum show,, then comment, and/or ask a question if you are interested and want to know more! You can also message me through facebook under my name

Sorry, but I've been "promoting" for "likes" for years now on Facebook. I've accumulated many THOUSANDS of "likes" for my novels and other art, but they have resulted in not one sale, only massive expenditures. In my experience, "likes" are meaningless. Sad, but true. Artists, beware... do some careful testing before you start spending money on social media ads, or Adwords (even worse). People who hang out on Facebook want to be "social," they don't want to buy stuff. I realize all the gurus and marketing books say to use social media ads... and if someone has used them with huge success, please report that to us... But Brainard, please... we look up to you for solid guidance.

Thank for your comment :) Good point, it is true, "likes" in themselves will not generate sales. The idea of paying to generate 'likes' is similar to getting email addresses, which again, will do very little in themselves. The way companies and small businesses on the web actually profit from likes, well, is something I should (and will) make a video about :) But to be brief, you have to find a way to engage your audience (the likers) by creating provocative posts. A provocative post means anything from asking a question, like suggesting a title for a painting, to creating a contest and giving away a print. Incidentally, when creating contests, that is how you often turn 'likes' into emails. Many artists do versions of that to create sales. One great way that artists have used that I work with, is to create hide-and-seek contests, which I learned about after interviewing an artist that the ny times mentioned was making a living off of facebook at the time! Here is my interview with him that details his process on facebook which not only got him sales but lots of local press, and you can replicate this in your town- yourartmentor.com/interview/patrickskoff.mp3

I'll check out the video, thanks. But I wonder what year the interview took place? The problem is that even to communicate with your "likers" on Facebook, you now have to PAY. Facebook didn't start out that way, but implemented the new "pay to promote" policy a few years ago. So, yes, I can engage "likers" by asking them interactive questions, but they'll never get the question to begin with unless I pay to "promote" the question/post to them. If someone can create a new Facebook without charging to "promote" posts, they are liable to make a killing. Maybe a "Facebook for Artists & Collectors? Brainard? You up for it?

D. A. Metrov Yes, you're right, now you have to boost posts, but listen to the interview and you will see he is doing something outside of facebook and using facebook itself as one platform to reach fans, much like twitter. He also puts links to his artist facebook page on his main page which of course has a greater reach. BUt he creatied a very savvy way to generate press- listen, trust me:)

Brainard Carey You're right. Patrick Skoff is a bloody marketing GENIUS! And it doesn't even matter that he's the worst hack "painter" in the country. (forgive me, Patrick, I hope you can take a little ribbing) Still, he's making a living doing what he loves! Kudos! Which brings us to Mr. Brainwash's message... it's not the art, stupid... it's the MARKETING! The art IS the marketing. And the Marketing IS the Art!

D. A. Metrov maybe you need to work on your product etc1 like is around $3, 3 to 5 years someone will buy a product from you so if you have 30,000 likes that is potentially sales, but you have to be patient and work on the quality of the product/s
