I don't understand the question - "curl" and "mount" are different things. Unless I'm misunderstanding your question.

Hi there! Installing FreeDOS on a USB stick (we have an installer image for that) and booting from that USB stick will *not* harm your Windows install. That should be fine. Just don't run the installer. Also don't run FDISK, which may touch your partition table even if you don't save changes.

FreeDOS (like any DOS) doesn't access USB directly, but goes through the BIOS for disk services. So you'll need to first ensure that your BIOS provides this compatibility. Also, you'll need to ensure the USB device is plugged in when you boot the machine - FreeDOS doesn't understand when USB devices have been removed and/or reinserted.

I run Linux on my desktop, and I use guestmount to mount the virtual machine's disk (when VirtualBox isn't running). That lets me copy files to/from the virtual disk, and that's how you'd copy the Toy to FreeDOS. Try double-clicking on the virtual disk "VDI" file (when VirtualBox isn't running) and see if it lets you open the virtual disk as a "drive." I think that's how it can work on Windows. Might have to right-click to select some option, not sure. On Linux, I can also open the VDI file with Disk Mounter to open it like a "drive" or "folder" - so I'm sure Windows will do the same.

Run “FDIMPLES /UPDATE” when you have a newer FreeDOS loaded. It will pre-select the packages that can be updated. Or you can selectively upgrade your FreeDOS using the Advanced mode in the installer. From the FreeDOS 1.3 LiveCD, boot into the LiveCD, then run "SETUP/ADV"

You can use Unzip to install packages. All packages on FreeDOS are (in the end) just zip files. But note that if you use Unzip to install packages without the installer, then the package manager doesn't correctly recognize that the package was "installed" so it can't remove it for you (you'd need to "uninstall" it manually, for example). The FDIMPLES installer does a few other housekeeping things too that simplify things. If you have a third-party application that's not included in FreeDOS, you'll need to unzip that and run its own installer.

These are floppy disk images, and you either need to write these to physical media (see RAWRITE) or you need to "mount" them and copy off the contents into your FreeDOS virtual machine. On Linux, you can mount these using the Disk Image Mounter, or you can do it on the command line with guestmount: $ mkdir /tmp/floppy $ guestmount -a disk01.img -m /dev/fda /tmp/floppy ... copy contents ... $ guestunmount /tmp/floppy Or with sudo: $ mkdir /tmp/floppy $ sudo mount -o ro disk01.img /tmp/floppy ... copy contents ... $ sudo umount /tmp/floppy

I don't know how to do it in Windows, but you might be able to do it from the Windows File Manager.
