Great video. A lot of people don't think about this stuff until after they have missed a couple animals or had bad hits in the field. Another great item to use as a rear rest is your bino bag. I wear mine with the straps loose enough that I can rotate it to my right side to shoot off of. It works great in the prone. It also works well when resting off of shooting sticks because I can wedge it in between my thigh and my elbow. It even works good if you're going to be shooting from a box blind on a hunt down south.

@Brady Miller this is a much better video. As I said on the last video, I will usually shoot from the sitting position but I always use a sling. A sling on your rifle is the most useful accessory you will every have on your rifle. J am a stalker/still hunter and have taken many shots from the off-hand and never missed even with a moving target and with a single shot. But, that is my type of hunting and not many can or will practice to become proficient at it. Thanks for the video! If anyone out there wants to learn to stalk/still hunt I’d be more than happy to teach. I once stalked within 20 feet of a 7x7 bull in Wyoming…but I only had a cow tag, that’s the thrill of stalk/still hunting.

I have one of the rugged ridge deals, packability is awesome. It’s actually pretty easy to get used to and works well.

I use my game bags as a rear rest occasionally. They are in a stuff sack and work fine, plus I already have them with me in the field, so no added weight.

I’d love to shoot prone… But in Where I hunt I’m either in heavy timber, logging cuts, or high grass/brush. The ability to shoot prone is almost never available. I like that tripod attachment but for 150$???? I have my tracking poles ghetto rigged to quickly convert to shooting sticks. So far it seems to work well

Can you please reply back with the bipod leg minimum/maximum height you prefer? I understand there are a million factors involved in the length, but curious what you find good?
@brady_j_miller
@brady_j_miller 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Erik. So like you said, million factors, but here is what I use. Forever I have used a bipod height in the range of 7 to 10 inches. If I needed more height, I made a backpack work to shoot off of. Recently, I wanted more out of a bipod which is why I went and did a ton of research. I ended up purchasing (full price) a new to me bipod that I really love. The bipod in the video is the new one I used the entire 2021 season and that MDT Ckyepod Gen 2 standard pull pretty much goes from 9" to 15". I actually believe it goes a little lower than that when you use the different leg sections a certain way. But I don't have it at the office right now to measure it. I really love how I can get very low with that bipod, and I could extend it up if needed and I'm not sacrificing a stable shot by being too tall. I think most people would enjoy something around 10 to 13 for a lot of shooting situations.

Brady you forgot about slings! Slings are not just purse straps for rifles. Many of today's slings can be adjusted on the fly and used in field positions such as off of a pack.

LOL, little bait and switch with the title imho. "Shooting prone in the field, why and how", would've been more accurate. Thanks though, still good info.

Always choose the most stable option, but one must practice standing, sitting, and kneeling shots. It pains me to see myself and my buddies miss easy close shots where a bipod or a tripod would never be an option.
@bradymiller6317
@bradymiller6317 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Prepare for everything is what I like to do as well. Missing an animal is never what anyone wants. We are sort of doing a series on this, and just kinda of building the foundation. There will be plenty more rifle videos to come!

Why not talk about more likely shooting positions? Sitting, kneeling, etc. Check out Wiser Precision Stix. Carrying shooting bags into the backcountry is impractical.
@brady_j_miller

More videos are always in the works :) And I agree. Shooting bags are impractical and I even made sure to mention that. Which is why this video was mainly about ways to use different pieces of gear around you or you could carry different pieces of gear. I just checked out that Wiser Precision product you mentioned and I really like it! I actually had my trekking poles sitting next to and totally forgot to talk about using them. Means I should head to the range again and do more of these.
