For 1600 years the church had Zero prayers for blessing icons. 7th ecumenical council says they are holy because of the image and name written on them. An icon can be made with any color medium. If there was an icon of the the Blessed Theotokos made with sidewalk chalk I’d venerate it.

Nuns and monks often make religious objects (as well as food and other items) to sell in support their abbey or monasteries. We support Christ's work when we purchase these items. Many of these religious centers have accommodations for guests; who wish to make a retreat.

That is very heartening to know! I would love to travel to one of those centers for a spiritual retreat.

@@Shinpleify Ask your Pastor to give you a list of the nearby monasteries, Then you can call them and make arrangements for a visit. Even if all you take is a tour of the facility it would be a nice outing for yourself and your family. Most of them have regular retreats that they sponsor or host. There is a small fee (99% of the time) that covers your food, etc.. I hope that you are able to visit a monastery soon.

I will for sure. Thank you for that thoughtful suggestion to get me started. Nature has always been the best environment to revitalize and restore my weary mind and spirit.

One of the best cases against the mentality that icons MUST be Byzantine and MUST be handpainted to be "real" icons is the miraculous myrrh streaming ( and on occasion blood streaming ) icon "The Softener of evil Hearts" It's without a doubt a western image, softstyle of the Mother of God. The specific one in Moscow that streams myrrh is from the Sofrino icon factory, it's a foil print on cardboard fiber board. Also little paper copies of the Hawaiian Iveron icon have began to stream myrrh after being placed on the miraculous icon, also a print, mounted on wood.

There are monasteries that use printouts and glue them to wood and sell them as well.

If in doubt, give it to your Priest and ask him to place it on the altar for 40 days.

@@Kaptnkrnch i think it was mentioned in the book "Mountain of Silence" or "Gifts of the Dessert" both by Kyriacos Markides. I used to have the exact reference, but would take too long to swarch for it.

I’m a Protestant, but I draw Orthodox icons because they look very interesting. I just look at the icons and draw them.

Glad you do! Just bear in mind that icons are drawn in many layers and just by looking at them you're missing out on their (literal :D ) depth :D

is it ok if an iconographer is a nonorthodox but atleast is a practicing orthodox christian?

Orthodox artisans in the middle-ages had no quams in selling icons to Catholics, or even decorating whole Catholic Churches in mosaic. Some of the better preserved medeval byzantine art is found in Catholic churches, having always remained in use. If Orthodox artists can sell art to Catholics then the opposite direction seems fine.

What about simply printed icons? I mean any printed icon I have, even ones I got from church, I consider "secondary" and wouldn't put them in my iconostasis.

Is it ok to use icons that aren't painted as long as they are blessed? I had an image of an icon printed onto a plaque for my mother and she loved it.

It is. In fact, most if not all churches and monasteries do offer and sell printed icons much more than hand-painted

As Bojan said, it is what is depicted that matters. Also, cannot remember where this ia from, but it is your faith in the saint that makes the icon wonderworking, not the modality of its creation. There do exist printed wonderworking icons, even paper icons that work wonders

What about the infamous site Monastery Icons? A lot of paganism is involved there and both Catholic and Orthodox laymen and clergy advise against it and quickly dispose of their objects

@@steventrosiek2623 that wouldn't be as big of a problem if they hadn't performed all these rituals over them. But even so, the question arises for me: isn't the saint depicted, thus the power of God, stronger than the evils performed upon it? They most definitely are! But even so... hmmm

Glad there’s no issue. I have Catholic and Orthodox icons which I like a great deal. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it at all. In fact, I kind of envy my Orthodox brethren as iconography has never been lost in your tradition. As of late it is become more common place in the Catholic world again.

Not to mention, we in the Catholic world have some wonderworking icons. There’s a Melkite church in Canada which for awhile streamed myrrh constantly for a few days. Might even still be myrrh streaming.

I’m catholic but what do you think of monasteryicons?? They are not painted. They are not even catholic or orthodox, it’s actually a cult. They have some of my favorite saints so I’m really tempted to buy some.

At least make sure the iconographer is a VERY Traditionalist Roman. The shorter the gap between them and Orthodoxy the better.

I know what you mean. I’m Catholic, but looking at the icons of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Maximilian Kobe, Pope John XXIII, JP II, doesn’t sit well with me. I stop at St. Augustin. To make things worse, I saw an icon of Martin Luther, Ghandi and Martin Luther King. I just wonder if someone has made an icon of Billy Graham.
