As someone that trains/teaches modern/gracie jiu-jitsu (ju jutsu i like how the Valente bros actually spell it correctly lol) I still hate the term Brazilian jiu-jitsu. There really is no "Brazilian" jiu-jitsu it was just ju jutsu/judo (non sport based) that was done in Brasil. Now in my opinion BJJ is nothing more than a rule set for a sport . I love what professor Robert Drysdale has done with his doc& book "opening the closed guard" to clear up a lot of the mythology /bjj legends and YT channels like Chadi as well. Definitely appreciate what Helio and the Gracie family have done to spread the art and keep a self defense focus. But not gonna pretend that they invented "leverage " or closed guard or ground fighting. I think its important that we keep the Japanese terms and recognize /search for true history and origins . I feel a good compromise is saying "modern ju jutsu" otherwise if we are gonna add countries everytime there's a big development or rule set it really should just be called American jj at this point . Its a Japanese word lets just call it what it is Ju jutsu (I dont mind the mispronunciation of jiu-jitsu lol) anyway done my stupid rambling love the channel just found it . Osu! Thanks for posting this video. Gordon Ryan was recently going after Josh Hinger for calling a move “Sniper Guillotine” instead of the Japanese name that already exists for it. At my gym we’ve been joking about calling every position/submission by it’s Japanese word. I really like how the Japanese terms in Judo and Jiujitsu translate so literally.
