Using my car as a Photo Blind - Heavy rain and shy wildlife | Scotland Ep.1

In this video I am in Glen Etive in Scotland to do some wildlife photography. The stags are very shy though, maybe because of the heavy rain so I have to improvise. By using my car as a photoblind I manage to get close enough to capture some beautiful moments.
Episode 2 will be published on Saturday:)

✦ ABOUT THIS VIDEO
I am in Scotland to meet up with Nikon and the Landrover team. We are going to photograph wildlife with some new equipment and there will be a film crew covering the 5 days.
I went to Scotland 6 days in advance to visit the Cairngorms to try my luck with the mountain hares but I did not see any.
I met up with my friend Joanna and we used her campervan as a basecamp for 3 days.
Together with her, I spent a few days in Glen Etive trying to photograph the Stags. They were very skittish though so I had to use my car as a photo blind.
✦ WHO I AM.
My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer.
I am a Nikon Ambassador and I work as an ILCP photographer.
Nature conservation is very close to my heart.
I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions.

Morten, I agree that a car makes a great photo blind. I am currently laid up from surgery and cannot easily walk around, but able to get in my car. I hang camouflage from the car door draped over the window and shoot through a lens hole concealing my movements. I have been able to photograph Whitetail Deer, birds, hawks and waterfowl. Love all your videos, you are a master film maker!

"A big grey wall of heavy rain...and wind coming..... ohh, it is snowing.... it is AWESOME" That is what separates most of us, from those like you. Thanks for taking us on this journey. A little bit of behind the scenes, dinner looked great, well done.

It's been a long week and this was just the thing I needed to relax a bit😊 I felt a bit nostalgic because this style of video where you drag us along with you looking for animals really reminded me of your earliest videos. I do love the big adventures, but these smaller and a bit more intimate videos are just so cosy. You really had really harsh conditions with the storm coming in during your stay. Looking forward to the next one!

Hi Morten, great video of Scotland's natural environment. I agree, sometimes it is nice just to sit back somewhere during a rainstorm and take in the sights, sounds, and fresh air above-all-else. I'm looking forward towards your next vlog. 📸📸🙂🌏

Morten I love your videos. I really love the pictures of the buck. I do find it interesting that deer often will allow you to get closer while in a car than on foot. That said, there are plenty of places near me, Seattle/Tacoma area in Washington USA, were deer will get very close to you. Having just eaten I must say I am jealous of the meal you had in the van. 😃 It looked like a gourmet meal.

I grew up in that area. I remember a deer and faun being within a few feet of me once when I was a kid. Now I live in Southern Utah and the deer are much more like the ones in this video.

I have photographed the last 5 spring warbler migrations from the window of my Tundra pickup truck. I call it my mobile bird blind. I put a piece of foam pipe insulation on the window for padding and lay my 8.6 pound 500mm f4G on the pad. The electric window helps with elevation controls. I can get some good close shots of these wary little birds using this system. Looking forward to your next post and hope I can also see it on PBS.
