Cohabitation records are often overlooked resources in African American genealogical research. You might ask what is a cohabitation record? Simply put, it was not legal for slaves to be married until after emancipation. In order to recognize their unions during slavery as legal, former slaves in North Carolina were required to register their “cohabitation” in the county in which they lived.

Thank you for posting this video. I am trying to find my fathers family records somewhere in the south. I have done many years of research on many other subjects and found good useful information while doing it. As I look for records of my fathers family it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Thanks again for this video, I might be able to pick up pieces of my fathers family records. Where there is a will there is a way. Be well.

There are Carter family records in Carteret and Craven County NC. Documentation exists tracing the African-Americans who also descended from free Blacks from Maryland.

Hassle family? Well idk if I can help but my Ancestors includes the Hassles of Saba in the Caribbean in the West Indies & they owned over 800 slaves from Africa that’s Documented. Oddly I also am from & live in North Carolina. My Ancestors ( the Hassles) did own many slaves in the Caribbean among other Ancestors of the Caribbean, but I don’t think my Family ( Hassles) came to NC with their slaves. In fact… my family developed & civilized the Island of Saba, and we still own that Island to this day. So check out Saba bc I know that a lot of my family were Hassles and had many slaves in Saba. Hope this helps!

Being colored dosnt denote to be enslaved or not as they had free colored as cencus says and we also know whites and Asians were both enslaved in America.
