A little known feature in Inkscape is the Offset Path Command. Today I show you what it is and how to use it.

Thank you! I clicked Dynamic Offset but didn't know to click on the node tool!

I did that in the beginning too lol. To be honest, I still sometimes click the offset then think "Where is the node? Why isn't it showing up?", then remember that the Select Tool is still selected 🤣 The Node Tool works in tandem with nearly every feature/Tool in Inkscape. It is one of my favourite things in Inkscape lol #StayCreative

Fantastic help. Thank you very much! The "edit node tool" was the piece I was missing.

Hello there my friend. I am really glad that you found this useful. I will be doing a video dedicated to the node tool soon as it seems to be the tool that a lot of people get frustrated with. Once you get used to using it, it becomes very intuitive but there are still a lot people that struggle so hopefully the video will help.

My issue arises after an object is Duplicate, then wanting to add 0.5 inch (for an example) to the Height and Width dimensions of it. Everything starts looking great along the horizontal & vertical straight lines but ends where the curved lines start by not showing the 0.5-inch distance that was added. Can’t show the two objects, but for instance, 1. Draw a rectangle, any size will do, with a Black Stroke & Zero Fill. 2. Using Node Editor, make the lower left vertical side extend outward. as if it is expanding in this area. 3. Duplicate it 4. To the Duplicate object, add say 0.5-inch to the Width & Height dimensions., Change the Stroke color to Red. 5. Place the Duplicated object over the original object and Center both Horizontally and Vertically in reference to the largest object. 6. Look closely at both objects, looking pretty darn good until you come to the blown-out area. It appears & is closer to the original object. I have tried everything, but yelling, reason being people might hear and think I've gone mad. Please help and Thanks in advance.

I know the exact problem that you are having. When it comes to the offset, it is great for creating a border "by eye" but not great for that precise design. The way around it is by using a particular Path Effect. The path effect in question is called Tiling. In essence, this allows you to "Tile" duplicates of your object in rows & columns. So if you wanted to, you can have two rows and one column which gives you two of the same object. You can then use the Node Tool to lay one over the other (so it looks like there is only one. From this point, you can use the Path Effect settings to increase/reduce the size of the object in any way you like. I have other videos that showcase this, but I have been asked about this a lot, so I may do a Short in the next day or two. If you still need help, email buttonpressgraphics@gmail.com & I can happily walk you through it step by step. Hope this helps 🙏 ☺️

nice video. hoped I see the solution for my problem to get a contur/outline for my object ( a star with 8 tips) in a given distance outside the original star. seems a bit impossible.

Yes, I know what you mean. I showed an example of it at the start but with no context for that method. Thatis on me. My apologies. However, I am going to start doing short-form tips too soon levering the power of YT Shorts so I can definitely show you how 😁

Many thanks, very useful video. Is there a way to do a repeat offset? eg creating 5 paths with fixed distance to each others from an initial path?
@ButtonPressGraphics
@ButtonPressGraphics 5 ай бұрын
There is but not by using the traditional Offset function. There are path effects for that which I will be covering in a future video 😁

Nice video, very helpful and to the point. I have tried this method with words and I always get some distortion on the letters or numbers. Lines do not move out and the angles and Lind become a jumbled mess. What am I missing? Any help is greatly appreciated. 🙏

Hi Darcy, yes! When it comes to text, it can become difficult as it will sometimes glitch. I can only assume that is what you are referring to. Unfortunately, this is a bug when working with the more complex shapes ie lots of curves and corners. There are two methods to rectify this. Firstly, try to reduce the spaces (Depending on the text font that you use). The less space there is between the letters &/or words will help. If this is still giving you issues, you can use the Tiled Clones Path Effect to increase the diameter of the letters/words as long as you have turned the text into a path first (Object To Path in the Path menu), I also have a video on that particular Path Effect if you are unaware of how to use it. This will allow you to layer objects over the top and increase the size. You can then use the offset to curve the corners if that is what you wish. Although the second option is more complicated, it can give a better result. I hope that this helps but if not, you can always reach out to me via email (buttonpressgraphics@gmail.com) and I would be happy to walk you through it step-by-step 😁
