Using RC Jet Engine to Clear Some Snow

Warped Perception

3 жыл бұрын

I had a crazy idea and thought maybe I can use my RC jet engine to clear the snow from in front of my garage that my neighbours have piled up shovelling, it was over 4 ft tall and about 4 ft thick.
Needless to say you can watch the video and tell me what you think but for me there's better snow removal methods out there that's for sure.
Are you used about 3 gallons of fuel for my run, definitely not a cost-effective way to remove Snow either..lol.
This engine is making about 70 lb of thrust and I ran jet a fuel.
I did have an idea where I can mount this jet engine to my machine and drive around clearing snow, however I don't want to do that yet simply because I need this engine to stay in good condition for my upcoming episodes.

I was wondering if you could use an aerosol can as a cheap substitute to nitrous oxide. Not exactly sure what kind, just something that wont make the engine get gummed up easily (mosquito repellent maybe?) Love your vids btw.

The insulating properties of snow are phenomenal. It’s one of nature’s perfect ablative materials. You’d have decent cutting ability if it was your jet engine vs. ice, but snow… snow’s a beast at resisting melting.

After the Blizzards of 2015 buried everything in Boston, MA, the subway trains grounded to a halt from tracks and third rail getting covered in snow. They rolled out a huge jet engine on tracks to try melting or blasting the snow away. It didn't work. The poor commuters in Quincy and Braintree had to use the shuttle busses for almost a month. Nice thoughtful video.
@grn1
@grn1 Жыл бұрын
I remember the 2015 V-Day Blizzard all too well, found out that Fire Hydrants don't actually spray water when you hit them (the bolt on top actually goes all the way down to a valve in the underground pipe) and got to go to (mandatory) court in a fancy rental with several feet of snow on the ground and no where to park at the police station and pay a $200 fine (which I could only pay with a check despite them accepting cards for other things). If they hadn't made it mandatory court they could've only charged me $150 instead of $100 for the ticket and another $100 for court fees. I was (and am) in Ohio btw.

You probably didn't underestimate the power of the engine but the energy that is needed to melt snow. I always have a hard time wrspping my head around this. But the latent energy that is needed to melt 0°C ice to 0°C fluid is about as much as heating up water from 0°C(32°F) to 80°C(176°F). Of course just blowing it away should take a lot less but probably still needs more force :) Thanks for your entertaining endeavors :)
@torque395
@torque395 5 ай бұрын
It surprised me how difficult it was to melt snow and ice with my 500,000 BTU weed burner torch. Melting it was easy initially - but after it was covered by a small amount of water mere seconds later, it's like I was wasting propane. I have to remove the layer of water in order to continue melting. I had a hard time figuring that out. It does indeed take an unbelievable amount of energy to melt ice/snow, and/or boil water. The most effective and effecient way to do any of the above would be to melt it from below, with proper drainage of the water. Its crazy how much different things actually are compared to what you expect them to be.
