Using REAPER with MA2: Timecode Made Easy

This is how I set up Reaper with MA2 and LoopMidi so that I can program timecode without any fancy playback hardware. And it's a lot better than using a janky left/right audio split cable! No console or special hardware required.

Great video! Here's a sound guy here trying to learn some lightning, and hell you've been helpful. Little tip I heard from an Spanish youtuber: use a phony private channel so you can check if your video got copyright issues or get demonetized. Then once the video passes KZfaq barriers upload it to your official channel so your job spreading knowledge get paid back PS: not English native speaker forgive my grammar

Dude! I’ve been following your work for a while now. i’ve always been in love with all of those fixtures and the work behind it, but never had the opportunity to give this close look. Now i’m starting to get what the guys are doing. Just leaving a suggestion, it would be really nice if you got time to do some lighting breakdown from another designers. I saw bruno mars’s live performance for 24k magic tour and their setup is INSANE. they’ve got about 320 individually controlled fixtures on the top of the stage. It got me wondering during the whole performance how the hell was it made and synced with the lots of other lighting layers. Cheers bro, keep up with the quality content! 🙏🏼

For those trying to do this with MA3 onPC: try disabling your MIDI out in MA. That worked for me when it kept confusing the quarter messages.

Awesome video! Nice way to sync music with MTC, but it could be possible to use it along a MIDI controller? I use a LPD8 to launch some Exec.Buttons but I can't figure out how to use both at the same time for a nice programmer session because you have to choose what MIDI device is accepting MA2 in.

Hey man, for some reason the audio keep fading close to the end of the track. I tried turning off that crossfade option and it didn't help. Any ideas?

hello cris how are you, I am connecting the ma2 on pc version 3.8 with the reaper 6.0 but the clock does not synchronize with the reaper but if the console clock works by giving play on the onpc and not when I give play to the reaper, what may be happening

I have a question that I don't know how to ask. Maybe I'll try to say what I want to do first. I'm a one man looping band. If for example my chorus has a rhythm guitar and a walking synth bassline, I would like to do the following for verse one: 1. Loop my acoustic guitar 2. In the playback of the loop, I want Reaper to engage my midi guitar pickup (Fishman tripleplay) using a predesignated bass synth, and overdub this loop. 3. Reaper stores this overdubbed verse when I start the chorus and replays it after the first chorus as I will add a Hammond organ sound through the midi pickup which would be triggered by Reaper. Is this called time-stamping or midi triggers? Will Reaper do this or do I need Ableton Live?

Just to add to this video - if you are more familiar to a different DAW (e.g FL Studio, Unableton (get it?)), you can adjust the midi settings in that daw to do the very same thing. If you already have a DAW, then the only thing u need to do is download LoopMIDI

Yep, but reaper is basically free and has the built in MTC/LTC generator.

Hey Christian, I need some help. When I go into the “GrandMA2 onPC Option” (6:00 into the video) my “MIDI In Device” says “None” and is highlighted in green. It does not let me change it and gives me no options to do so. I have midiLoop and Reaper I stalled and communicating with each other fine.

Taping the beat with the spacebar and fill the timecodes iin the MA will take hours. The beat is on the grid in the Daw and sending midi notes to MA that can be used auto and also MTC or LTC that will be used every 2 sec. in your MA program is a better way.

Joe's Cinema I'm not sure what he the think's but I have used it and really like it. It is really good if you have allot of timecode or timecode on video.

Sooo I'm close to getting them linked up but I have one issue. When I start the track in Reaper, I just get a gray timestamp on my timecode clock in MA2, not a running green clock that is linked to Reaper. I can tell it's getting some data from Reaper though because if I move the starting position of the track cursor in Reaper, the MA2 TC clock changes to that cursor point when I start the track. One thing I notice is that I don't have a MIDI in Device on MA called "loopMIDI port." Mine is just named MA2 MIDI Loop. Could this indicate an issue? Thanks for any feedback.

Are you sure that your timecode slot that the clock is assigned to is listening to the correct source? Check to see which timecode slot your onpc station midi input is assigned to in network config. By default midi is slot 2.

Hi everybody, just got my setup with reaper & loopmidi working, but i noticed that the tc tracking is always ~40-80ms off in ma. Anyone knows if this is a loopmidi related problem? I tried to program a very accurate timecode to a track and those 50ms are driving me crazy. Prerole/offset also doesn't solve the issue bc sometimes its 40 ms and the other time its 60 ms off. thx in advance :)

oh wow 2 years ago.. i think the biggest issue were the fps I had set. Make sure reapers tc gen is the same as the frame settings in MA2. i think I had 25 fps in reaper and 1/100 in MA2 back then.

This would be perfect in case you don't want to connect the actual hardware i.e. OnPC Command Wing. However, when we do have to connect the command wing at the time of the show, what are the connections you would have to make in order to trigger the timecode?

That’s the whole point... this is for pre production when you do not have a timecode source. For the show you just plug in the timecode source to the LTC in on the command and switch the timecode slot to listen to the command wing port... midi timecode is so you can do this without having to do that.

Ohh yes, I get it. But then I am getting some issue while using the LTC In slot. Can't get rid of that noise at all and timecode in my command wing abruptly stops the recording itself. I am unable to find where am I going wrong? @@christianjackson

I don’t know what you mean. This pre programming technique is so you can do all the programming ahead of time with the proper timecode offsets. Whoever is sending you the timecode shouldn’t be sending you any audio. And if you’re trying to run both the audio and timecode signal, you just need to split it.

@@christianjackson Yes, I am going to trigger audio through reaper or the exported track in laptop plus my timecode wherein exactly I am experiencing the issue. I have got 3.5mm to 2x male XLR cable of which one male XLR goes to my command wing LTC In port and another one goes to my speaker. I am not able to get rid of the noise of LTC. The timecode assigned to the 1st TC Slot of my command triggers rightly though. P.S. - In my reaper, track is at 100% Right pan and TC Generator at 100% Left pan.
