Using Seaweed as Bait to Catch Tropical Fish - ft. The Fish Whisperer

I have always seen parrotfish (a tropical fish species) swimming along the rocks, but I never figured out how to catch them. Kyle aka "The Fish Whisperer" and I discovered that the Parrotfish liked eating seaweed. We found some seaweed and tried using it for bait. To our surprise, the parrotfish aggressively ate the seaweed. We ended up catching around 30 parrotfish, it was unbelievable!

Thank you for posting these videos, Josh. I am a homebound single mom who had a spine/spinal cord injury 8 years ago. I am mostly bed-ridden so I watch a fair bit of shows on KZfaq and I have to admit I'm one of your most loyal new subs. I've spent so much time binge watching your videos, my daughter thinks I have gone a bit nuts, haha. I'm looking forward to checking out Kyle's channel as I've checked out some of your other KZfaqrs you've fished with and like them a lot too (Deer Meet For Dinner, Justin, Rackley, etc.). If I were an able-bodied person, I can honestly say I'd love to go out on a boat with you and watch you fish. Anyways, it is what it is, but I wanted you to know that you have all kinds of people watching your videos so thank you for sharing them! Heather🇨🇦

Aloha Guys, here in Hawaiʻi we call that type of brown seaweed Limu Kala. We use Limu Kala as bait to catch Kala (Unicorn Fish), Palani/Pualu (Surgeon Fish), and Nenue (Rudderfish aka Bermuda Chub). In over 50 years I have never caught a Parrotfish (Uhu) on seaweed. Our parrotfish actually eats coral, you can even hear them crunching away on the coral while snorkeling and even see them poops sand out which used to be coral. I have caught parrotfish not on seaweed but on the leg of a Brittle Star starfish. We also have these black crabs long legged and fleet of foot that live between the boulders of a seawall that we call ʻAʻama. These ʻAʻama crab legs make great bait for parrotfiah too. Keep up thje great videos! Just an FYI all parrotfish are born females (dull gray to red color and later on the larger females will turn into the blue males both colors being the same species. Parrotfish are considered delicacies here in Hawaiʻi. We like to steam them up whole with ginger slivers, chopped green onion, and cilantro with hot sesame oil poured over the fish right before serving. Try a catch & cook with parrotfish in the future, I think you will like it.

Fishing with seaweed for fish like parrot fish, mullet, and other reef fish is actually really popular in hawaii. It's cool to see the technique being used in florida also. There are a lot of the same fish so it makes sense. If you need to get more distance on your casts you can also fish the seaweed under a surf bobber.

I believe it was back in 1989, when my family moved(Dec. 1988) to an island called Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, first fish I caught was a parrot fish(but the bait was not seaweed). Some blue, others green, and the others we called 'Rainbow fish' for the colors so like rainbow: and parrot fish my friends and I used as a bail to catch bigger food fish. Market people wanted me to catch more parrot fish and sell for it was quite expensive: very good and expensive food fish they are. About 10 years ago one of my friends told me I could use seaweed as bait I did not 100% believed his word, but I see you are doing it. I wish I could spare some time to go fishing with my children as my father did with me nearly 30 years ago. Thank you for the opportunity I can recall one of my happy moment in my life.

I only start eating fish in 2009. Never had fish all my life but the parrot fish was the first one i`ve tried and ever since I fell in love with it. The parrot fish is my fav but the funny thing is i`ve never caught any in all my fishing. I caught snappers over 16" and groupers close to 20" but never a parrot. Love the videos guys thanks for sharing.

You got to be sure to release those carefully because parrotfish are crucial to reef health. They fished them out in Jamaica and the reef was covered in nuisance algae. Only now after many years is the reef starting to come back.
